Why BIAB?

Brew in a Bag (BIAB) is a quick, easy and economical way to brew all grain batches of beer.  I released my brew day spreadsheet some time ago along with a version of that to be used for small batch beers.  See below for links.  Either of those could be modified to work with BIAB by changing variables,  This version is specifically designed for full size BIAB batches.

How I Use Brew Day Spreadsheets

How do I use brew day spreadsheets?  First, I do use recipe formulation software.  Some of those programs have brew day components.  I’ve just never gotten into using those features.  For better or worse, I use a spreadsheet.  I make a copy and name it using the batch number and beer name and then quickly plug in the basics.  This creates a one sheet printable page that I can use on brew day.  That gives me a single piece of paper with all of my numbers and a spot for brew day notes.  Notes can go back into the spreadsheet for archival.

Hands on Review Blichmann Engineering Riptide Pump

In the world of hot wort pumps for homebrewing, there are a couple of big name players that have dominated the market for some time. There are also some new entries in this segment that offer just as good function, but at a much lower price. Blichmann came in with a completely different strategy. Rather than trying to do the same thing better, or the same thing for less money, they wanted to re-write expectations for what a homebrew pump should do. It’s like the first time you saw a BBQ grill that had lights to cook at night and a built-in bottle opener. You told yourself, “Wow, I didn’t know you could get one like that… I want one!”

As with anything Blichmann makes, the Riptide follows suit with top-notch quality and looks, and a price tag to remind you that you’re buying top of the line. In the case of this pump, they legitimately bring features that no other pump on the market has and at a price comparable to the current top of the line wort pumps (that don’t have these features). So it’s arguably reasonably priced.

  • Gamma Seal Lids – Hands on Review – are a great upgrade to standard buckets.  You attach the base of the unit to the bucket and leave that intact.  The lid screws on and off easily.  No more prying lids off.  These are also airtight.  I use buckets with Gamma Seal Lids as my primary storage for bulk grain and recipe kits.
  • How much grain can you store in a 5 gallon bucket?  My rule of thumb for grain storage capacity is 5 lbs per gallon.  With that estimate a  50 lb sack of grain fits in (2) 5 gallon buckets.  That’s a rough estimate, actual storage capacity will vary.

These are upgraded replacement o-rings for Gamma Seal Lids. These feature a solid core (OEM was a hollow o-ring) and they are fully molded (OEM had a glued seem that was a common failure point).

Gamma2 as a company is 100% dedicated to their mission of designing and providing pet food containers to animal owners (technically they also care about your dog getting out of the pool, as they make a doggy pool exit ramp). But, that doesn’t mean these “pet food containers” can’t be co-opted for homebrewing. The same characteristics that make them ideal for pet food, also make them ideal for malt storage.

Vittles Vault 60-lb Container

I’ll go through a few storage basics for malt. First, you want to store it uncrushed, so that the husk helps keep the good stuff inside protected from the environment. Cracked grain kernels are more enticing to critters, and opens up the endosperm to fast staling. Beyond that, grain wants to be kept at cooler room temperatures (40 – 60F), dry, away from light, and in an airtight environment. Maltsters range in the max recommended storage time, with most in the 12-18 months range, and some up to 24 months. When you buy grains by the 55-lb sack, most will put a “best by” date on the label, since you don’t know how old it is before you get it. Although you can save money by buying grains in bulk, you need to make sure you have the right throughput to use it up before it stales.

Gamma2 has a number of different types and sizes of storage containers. All are designed to be airtight, so they keep air from getting in and staling your grains when you’re not scooping it. (Which of course, the same thing can’t be said for that 55-lb sack of grain you’ve got in the corner, with a stretch of duct tape over the hole you cut into it…) The lid design is how they achieve this air-tightness. There’s a compliant o-ring that’s held in a groove on the lid which gets compressed down onto a chamfered face on the body of the container to make the seal. As the threaded lid gets screwed down, the o-ring will get squished to block off the air-leak path past the lid.

Note from HBF: Given the right setup, this could be helpful as a pulley for a BIAB setup.  Of course, you’ll want a capable place to hang it and want to make sure to stay under the rated capacity.

Whopping 440 lb capacity.  Easy to read LCD display.  Displays in kg/g/lb/lb:oz.

The removable face on this scale makes it easy to weigh larger items… like buckets of grain.  This has a readability of 170g / 6oz.  That should work great for weighing base grains and larger amounts of specialty grains for most full batch (5 gallon+) brewers.  If you’re looking for something for smaller amounts (hops, water salts, smaller amounts of specialty grains, etc) consider the AWS-100 – Hands on Review

This looks similar to my 24″ Stainless Whisk only… larger.  That whisk is an easy upgrade that I generally recommend for all but small batch only brewers.  Check out my Hands on Review of that great tool.

Use this on brew day in your mash tun and brew kettle.  In the mash tun… a whisk like this makes quick work of breaking up up doughballs.  In the brew kettle… Use to incorporate extract, stir the brew kettle or start a kettle whirlpool.

This is rated for 25 lbs.  That, generally speaking, is for pet food.  This has a stated capacity of 33 quarts. 33 Quarts = 8.25 gallons. My estimation for unmilled grain storage capacity is 5 lbs per gallon. At that rate, this would hold about 41.25 lbs of grain.  This is a rough estimate. Actual storage capacity will vary.
