The removable face on this scale makes it easy to weigh larger items… like buckets of grain. This has a readability of 170g / 6oz. That should work great for weighing base grains and larger amounts of specialty grains for most full batch (5 gallon+) brewers. It’s a big brewing world out there, make sure you see as much of it as possible! Australian Sparkling Ale is one of those mysterious beer styles that a lot of us had never sampled (or even heard of, really). But its light, easy-drinking body paired up with delicious hop-forward flavors and aromatics make it an outstanding, sessionable brew. Pilsner dominates the malt profile with a dash of White Wheat and Carapils for body and mouthfeel, allowing the hop combination of Galaxy and Strata to really pop. Similar to how the best view of the Milky Way is on a moonless night in the Outback, these hops are on gorgeous display as post boil and dry hop additions, with very little bitterness to cloud the citrus, tropical, and cannabis character they impart.

Symons Galaxy was first brewed at Imperiale Beer Project in Brentwood, CA as part of a virtual collaboration with Australian beer historian, Peter Symons. Who better to have at your side (albeit through the computer screen) than the gentleman who literally wrote the BJCP guidelines for the style? This collaborative effort resulted in a unique, modern take on the ASA style—introducing Strata, a non-Australian hop, into the mix to complement the heavy additions of Galaxy hops. Symons Galaxy was a smash hit, and is sure to satisfy any hop head out there.

pH Meter: You can use a pH meter to check the pH of your water, mash, [test Star San effectiveness] and finished beer.
TDS Meter: TDS meters can are helpful for brewing if you’re using a RO filter or if you purchase RO (reverse osmosis) water for brewing. If you’re using an RO filter a TDS meter tells you how effective your filter is and can help you know if your filters need to be replaced. If you buy RO water, a TDS meter can let you know what you’re getting as some water processors add minerals back for flavor. A TDS meter will allow you to make sure you’re getting what you want.
Thermometer: You can use a thermometer to… measure temperature. 🙂

Hands on Review: The Barley Crusher

Having brewed all-grain for many years, I’ve spent lots of time refining my processes to try and produce predictable results. Things like brewing software make this much easier and do a great job of helping you calculate all your numbers. We can control how much grain we use and how much water, mash thickness, sparge volume, volumes going into fermenters, pitching rates, the list goes on. One thing I hadn’t been controlling, was my grain crush. When I had a local homebrew shop, the owner had no problem with me asking to double mill the grains to help get as fine a grain crush as possible while still not owning a mill. When he closed his shop, I was forced to start ordering my supplies online. Ordering from multiple different locations, having them mill my grain, it was obvious the variable that was changing was the crush size and I felt I was getting inconsistent results. Recently I purchased an all-in-one electric all grain system (Anvil), my brew days got much easier but my efficiency started to really suffer.

Why these instead of a pH meter? pH meters have their place. The downside is they require maintenance and continued cost. You have to calibrate, clean and properly store pH probes for accurate readings. I believe this is why pH meter reviews tend to skew negative.
