Hands On Review: Gamma Seal Lids for Homebrew Grain Storage

Buckets are… Good for Grain Storage

Buckets are cheap and efficient containers for storing bulk homebrewing malts. They are generally sturdy and cost effective. Since they stack, they are also space efficient. Search Amazon for “food safe buckets”

How Much Grain Can You Store in a 5 Gallon Bucket?

My general rule of thumb for unmilled malt storage is 5 lbs per gallon. That means a 5 gallon bucket would hold about 25 lbs. Two x buckets would hold a full 50 lb bag of malt. That’s a rough estimate. Actual storage capacities will vary.

The Problem… Lids

I’ll group standard bucket lids into two categories.

First… relatively easy to install and remove and…. questionable on air-tightness. No o-rings or gaskets. They go on fairly easy and come off relatively easy. Sometimes too easily, I’ve had this style pop off on their own.
Second… sturdy, airtight lids… that require the power of Thor to remove. These are gasketed and seal well but are tough to remove. They’re so hard to remove, they make tools to do it. If you’re stuck with these lids, those are worth a look. Search Amazon for “bucket lid opener” to see what’s out there.

The Fix… Gamma Seal Lids!

High quality, gasketed lids do exist for 5 gallon buckets. The problem with these lids is… they are usually difficult to remove, sometimes very difficult. The revolutionary thing about Gamma Seal lids is that the ring stays installed on the bucket. That ring is used in conjunction with an easy to remove spin off lid that features airtight seals. Airtight + Easy to Use = Whammo!

This beer combines the richness of black malt with the old-world smokiness of Bamberg: a Franconian village that is at once worldly and yet devoted to its traditional ways. Brewed with an ale yeast, it mimics the origins of English porter, a beer made solely from brown malts dried over a direct wood fire. And since you’ll never find a beer like this at your local liquor store, you’ll have to brew it to appreciate the flavorful treats it can offer. With an astounding Two Pounds of Rauch Malt, any fan of smoked beers will fall in love with Ray’s beer! Ray recommends British Ale yeast, WLP005.

Ray began brewing in 1989 after seeing a homebrew store ad at a Chicago hamburger shack. “The first batch was pretty good,” he says, “but the second one was awful. Fortunately, I had already brewed the third batch before tasting the second, or that might have been the end of things. After tasting that beer, there was no looking back: I dove headlong into brewing and tasting and learning as much as I could about the art of brewing.” That informaton was put together in his book, “Designing Great Beers”, which has since become a must-have for any serious brewer. Over the years he has brewed more than 200 batches. When he started all-grain brewing in 1990 there weren’t many options for buying mashing equipment, so he made his own 10-gallon vertical Coleman cooler Mashtun. More than 90 percent of the 200 batches he had made over the years were produced on the homemade equipment–although now the mash tun has been retired after some unsuccessful modifications a few years back. You may now know Ray as the founder of the highly successful Cicerone Program which certifies and educates beer professionals.

I use my homebrew pump (different model and different manufacturer) for vorlaufing/recirculating, transferring from my mash tun to brew kettle, chilling with a recirculating wort chiller and transferring to my fermenter.
