Notes from HBF: Using new bottles saves time cleaning bottle labels and insures you have a completely clean and ready to sanitize bottle. I know of some homebrewers that use new bottles for every batch while some use new bottles for competitions and others buy new bottles and re-use time and time again.  Since these are large and bulky, shipping can be a big expense. Consider total cost including shipping when making a buying decision.

For me, getting a refractometer was one of those upgrades that made a lot of difference.  With a refractometer you need a sample size of two drops.  I figured that this would pay for itself in beer savings alone.  I also had just broken my hydrometer and came to the realization that hydrometers are made of breakable glass that can break! 🙂

With the aid of calculators – get a Free Non-Expiring Brewfather Trial Account –  Refractometers can be used to measure gravity throughout the brewing process.

Regular Replacement:

I recommend regularly replacing non-glass bottles used to store acidic solutions like Star San.

Five Star Chemicals says that you should not soak items in Star San solution for extended periods of time. Even chemical resistant bottles are not impervious to damage caused by extended exposure to acid. Glass and stainless are exceptions. I can’t tell you an exact time frame, but personally, I’m now aiming to replace spray bottles every six months. See: Star San Tips and Tricks

For me, a quality utility sink is an important tool when homebrewing.  I’ve done interviews in the past and been asked… what is on your home brewing wish list.  I’ve felt a little silly answering…. a sink!  But, I’ve tried to clean homebrew gear in a regular kitchen sink and I don’t like it.  I much prefer a large, quality utility sink.  Having done it both ways, it makes a big difference come cleanup time.

Use to control your compatible kegerator or fermentation chamber.

Single stage temperature controller with 1,800 watt rating. Controls a heating or a cooling device. I would say that 1,800 watt is a higher capacity than many of the homebrew controllers out there.

A couple things I really like about this controller… It features a direct plug in instead of an extension cord style plugin. I think that’s a tidier setup in a lot of cases. Second it features start and stop temperatures. Normally temp controllers have a set point and an offset. The controller attempts to keep things close to the set point within the constraints of the offset. So, let’s say it’s 68 degrees with a 2 degree offset. That works just fine but it’s more confusing than.. start at this temperature, stop at this temperature.
