Best-selling authors and acclaimed fermentation teachers Christopher Shockey and Kirsten K. Shockey turn their expertise to the world of fermented beverages in the most comprehensive guide to home cidermaking available. With expert advice and clear, step-by-step instructions, The Big Book of Cidermaking equips readers with the skills they need to make the cider they want: sweet, dry, fruity, farmhouse-style, hopped, barrel-aged, or fortified. The Shockeys’ years of experience cultivating an orchard and their experiments in producing their own ciders have led them to a master formula for cidermaking success, whether starting with apples fresh from the tree or working with store-bought juice. They explore in-depth the different phases of fermentation and the entire spectrum of complex flavor and style possibilities, with cider recipes ranging from cornelian cherry to ginger, and styles including New England, Spanish, and late-season ciders. For those invested in making use of every part of the apple, there’s even a recipe for vinegar made from the skins and cores leftover after pressing. This thorough, thoughtful handbook is an empowering guide for every cidermaker, from the beginner seeking foundational techniques and tips to the intermediate cider crafter who wants to expand their skills.

Highlighting wines from old world regions such as France, Italy, Spain, and Germany to new world wines from the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, and more, The Essential Wine Book tells you what to drink and why. Beginning with foundational information about how wine is made, how to taste it, and how to understand terroir, wine expert and journalist Zachary Sussman then gives an overview of the most important and interesting wine regions today—both established and still emerging.

In a similar vein, California’s Napa Valley has for decades been the source of America’s most prestigious wines, but here you’ll learn about other areas of the state that are gaining recognition, from Lodi to the Santa Rita Hills.

You’ll find user-friendly “just the highlights” notes for each region, as well as recommendations for producers and particular bottles to seek out. Diving deep into what makes each region essential and unique, this comprehensive guides gives new wine drinkers and enthusiasts alike an inside track on modern wine culture.

Barrel-Aged Stout and Selling Out: Goose Island, Anheuser-Busch, and How Craft Beer Became Big Business Kindle Edition

Barrel-Aged Stout and Selling Out: Goose Island, Anheuser-Busch, and How Craft Beer Became Big Business Kindle Edition by Josh Noel

More Info

From the book description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Goose Island opened as a family-owned Chicago brewpub in the late 1980s, and it soon became one of the most inventive breweries in the world. In the golden age of light, bland and cheap beers, John Hall and his son Greg brought European flavors to America. With distribution in two dozen states, two brewpubs and status as one of the 20 biggest breweries in the United States, Goose Island became an American success story and was a champion of craft beer. Then, on March 28, 2011, the Halls sold the brewery to Anheuser-Busch InBev, maker of Budweiser, the least craft-like beer imaginable. The sale forced the industry to reckon with craft beer’s mainstream appeal and a popularity few envisioned. Josh Noel broke the news of the sale in the Chicago Tribune, and he covered the resulting backlash from Chicagoans and beer fanatics across the country as the discussion escalated into an intellectual craft beer war. Anheuser-Busch has since bought nine other craft breweries, and from among the outcry rises a question that Noel addresses through personal anecdotes from industry leaders: how should a brewery grow?

The Joy of Brewing Cider, Mead, and Herbal Wine: How to Craft Seasonal Fast-Brew Favorites at Home Kindle Edition

More About This Title

From the book description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

You’re ready to try your hand at home brewing, but you want to try something unique—and you also have no idea where to start. This is the book for you. Broken into three sections—mead, cider, and herbal wine—you’ll learn what basic equipment you’ll need, what ingredients to have on hand, and author Nancy Koziol will walk you through each step of the process. Along the way, you’ll pick up some fun facts about ethical consumption, sustainable farming, and the science behind fermenting.
Whether you want to try a simple honey mead, a crisp apple or pear cider, or a wild wine with herbs foraged from your backyard, in these pages you’ll find the inspiration and instruction you need to follow through to the finished product. Many of these drinks are brewed in a matter of weeks rather than months, so you don’t even have to be particularly patient! Once you get the hang of the basics, try experimenting with the suggested seasonal additions, or whatever fruit, herb, or spice is ready for harvest (or on sale at the local market). Add some ginger to your cider, some blackberries to your wine, or some pumpkin to your mead for brews that are truly your own.
With a unique focus on local, seasonal produce and sustainable farming practices, this will appeal to seasoned brewers who are looking for something new as well as eco-conscious millennials ready to impress their friends on Instagram. Fascinating tidbits of trivia, information on health benefits, and a dash of humor make this book as entertaining as it is useful.

The most comprehensive guide to the world of beer, with everything you need to know bout what to drink, where, when and why.

“The ultimate guide.” —Sports Illustrated

Imagine sitting in your favorite pub with a good friend who just happens to have won a TACP Award—a major culinary accolade—for writing the book about beer. Then imagine that he’s been spending the years following the first edition exploring all the changes that continue to shape and evolve the brewing world. That’s this book, the completely revised and updated bible on beer that covers everything: The History, or how we got from the birth of malting and national traditions to a hazy IPA in 12,000 years. The Variety: dozens of styles and hundreds of brews, along with recommended “Beers to Know.” The Curiosity: If beer’s your passion, you’ll delight in learning what type of hops went into a favorite beer and where to go for beer tourism, as well as profiles of breweries from around the world. And lastly, The Pleasure. Because, ultimately, that’s what it’s all about.

“A tome worthy of its name.” —Food and Wine

“Easily digestible for drinkers of all levels.”—Imbibe

“Pick up this book as a refresher or a gift, lest we forget that spreading beer education is just as important as advocating for good beer itself.”—Beer Advocate
