The KegLand Cannular can seamer is one of the most compact and easy to use benchtop can seamers around. With a single operator you can seam/seal the cans in under 5 seconds meaning this compact machine is suitable for small breweries or brewpubs doing small production runs. The Cannular comes with a die for a size 202 beer can lid.  Additional dies will be available in the future, but for right now, only cans with a size 202 lid can be canned on this machine.

SAFE 24 VOLT POWER (OPTIONAL) If you have ever used a can seamer you would know that you can sometimes spill liquids while processing cans. As a result we have made the Cannular machine with 24v DC so even when you make a mess you don’t have a risk of electrocuting yourself. This also makes the machine easier to clean and wash down. An optional step down transformer plugs into any 110 volt outlet. If you do not purchase this optional transformer, you need to get an Anderson Plug twin wire lead so you can feed power into the Cannular Canning Machine.  Suitable DC power sources besides transformers include cordless drill batteries, and even car batteries.

GO ANYWHERE & EASILY RECYCLED Cans are a fantastic choice for outdoor events, parties, pool events, or at the beach. Broken glass can be dangerous and difficult to clean up completely. Cans on the other hand are the safest choice in this respect.

LIGHT BLOCK  Many beverages especially beer can get damaged quickly due to light. If you expose many beers to sunlight for even 5 minutes the beer can become light damaged (“skunked”). Even softer light such as indoor lights will damage beer over time and noticeable skunking can occur with both incandescent and fluorescent light globes within hours. So unless you keep your glass bottles in the dark all the time you will compromise the beer quality. Aluminium cans solve this problem by blocking 100% of damaging light. Dimensions 14″ depth x 9″ wide x 20″ height.

The Cannular Canning machine comes already adjusted to use the 500ml cans that we sell. If however you use different can sizes or the machine has become out of alignment in shipping you may need to adjust the Cannular.

Applications:

  • PET Bottles as Growlers: These are generally intended to convert 1L and 2L bottles to growlers.  Fill up a 1L or 2L PET bottle with your favorite homebrew.  Put one of these on (purge the headspace by squeezing if you want to) and then pressurize for transport.  This should help to reduce oxygen pickup and maintain carbonation levels.
  • Fine tune or rapidly carbonate beer: You can also use this cap to rapidly carbonate beer.  Same process as for transport, just set your regulator to the proper pressure and shake or agitate the PET bottle to help introduce CO2.  Or hook it up to CO2 and let it sit in you kegerator.

Some carbonation cap models are universal fit and some work only with gas posts.  For draft line cleaning projects to work well, at least in my opinion, the carb cap that’s used needs to be universal. Integrated Ball Lock Connectors
The integrated ball lock connectors allow you to quickly attach your beer and gas ball lock disconnects. We recommend the use of the Duotight Ball Lock Quick Disconnects in Gas and Liquid to connect to these inputs and outputs.

Integrated Pinch Valve
The integrated pinch valve is one of the things that makes this unit far superior to other filling machines. The pinch valve enables you to easily remove the beer line for cleaning so the stainless tube, silicone hose, and yellow ball lock cap removes completely and can be put into the dishwasher or cleaned in the sink. The pinch valve is mechanically simple and therefore reliable. It is not subject to small particles like hops getting stuck in the device and eliminates the need for pre-filtration. It simply pinches down on the silicone tube to shut off the flow. This design also enables laminar flow that reduces foaming. The pinch valve improves reliability, makes it easier to operate, and a piece of cake to clean.

Integrated Regulator
Other filling machines require an external regulator that may need to drop the pressure lower than your normal keg dispensing pressure. Unlike these other fillers, this filler has an integrated regulator which saves time and setup costs. This integrated regulator means you will not damage your machine by accidentally connecting it to a high-pressure gas source. You can hook up your gas line without the need for another external regulator or to fool around with your gas supply at all. Just set the integrated regulator once during setup and forget about it.

Multi-Purpose
The long stainless tubes and adjustable height make this device useful for pretty much any bottles up to 11.8″ (30cm) high or cans up to 10.6″ (27cm) high. It can also be used for still or carbonated beverages, so this device is useful for wine bottles, beer cans, champagne, crown seal bottles, and pretty much any other bottle/can/vessel that has a neck opening greater than 0.59″ (15mm). It can also be used for filling glasses, jars, or other vessels.

Fill Profiles
Some other machines require a full calibration to change from one vessel type to another. This machine allows you to pre-save fill profiles depending on what you are doing. Save a filling profile for your 12 oz cans and then save a different filling profile for your 750mL wine bottles. Use our pre-saved presets or alternatively make your own fill profiles with different purge times and fill height. These are also synced with the RAPT.io portal so you can save profiles and share them with friends or deploy them to several other devices.

RAPT.io Connected (via WiFi)
As well as all the features above, this filler connects to your WiFi and keeps track of your Cans Per Minute (CPM), fill speed, and even temperature (if you purchase the external Instant Read Temperature Probe separately). It will log all usage information so you can keep track of how your machine is running or even keep track of your staff to make sure they are cycling the machine at an acceptable rate. The connectivity to the RAPT.io portal will enable you to more easily change settings, update profiles, and keep track of your fill days so you can historically keep track of how your fill day went and which day you processed each batch.

Low DO Pickup
The quality and longevity of your beverage are often defined by how well you keep oxygen off your product. This filler purges the oxygen out of the can and will enable you to get substantially lower dissolved oxygen.

Wall Mounted Design
This type of can and bottle filler has primarily been designed for wall-mounting configuration. This allows you to bring a can or bottle up to the filler from the underside of the unit. To wall mount this unit you can download and print this template.

New Updates!… Hands on Review: Oktober Design SL1 Can Seamer – Can Your Homebrew

Oktober Design was started in 2014 by a group of engineers and beer lovers. They make high quality, well thought out and affordable Crowler and Can seamers.  Their target has been brew pubs and smaller commercial brewers. With the introduction of the SL1 they’ve finally made a machine designed specifically for homebrewers.

Before Oktober Designs and similar started making countertop can seamers, canning beer was out of reach and unrealistic for homebrewers and even some smaller brew pub operations.  I looked into canning early in my homebrewing career. Around that time a manufacturer released an “affordable” system that was in the $10k, range. That was considered affordable at the time. I’m happy to say that times have changed.

Why Can?

Cans block all light and oxygen transfer. That’s not true of bottles. They also play well at the park, beach and pool. Glass bottles are made from breakable glass that can… break. 🙂 Canning is also… cool. We’ve been able to pretty easily do everything that commercial brewers have been able to do – Conicals, Control Panels, Fermenting Under Pressure and More – for quite some time. Canning, until recently, was a hold out.

Even with new equipment like the SL1 becoming available, canning is more expensive than bottling. You can save used bottles for free and use a $10 capper. This means that doing things as cheap as possible cannot be a driving factor when considering a can seamer.

Kegland Cannular Can Seamer

It’s been a long road for craft beer to be accepted in cans and not bottles. But it has been well established that cans are OK, too, and some take it even further to tout cans as a superior storage vessel for beer. I’ll avoid a full-blown comparison of the pros & cons of each, but I do feel it worth noting a couple of the selling points cans have. One is the claim that cans provide better storage with a more oxygen-proof seal than bottle caps, and 100% light blocking versus even brown colored glass. There is probably lots of debate on those two topics, but one benefit that is universally recognized is transportability. Cans are lighter and more compact, a whole lot less fragile, and you can take them to beaches and pools where glass containers are banned.

On the homebrew scale, until recently, the canners available have either been hand-crank monstrosities that look like an exhibit from a museum on the industrial revolution, or electrically driven units that look like steampunk movie props and cost a couple thousand dollars. Then in 2019, KegLand from Australia started exporting their Cannular can seamer that sells for $525 for the unit + power supply and is electrically powered. This changed the landscape significantly in the homebrew world, making canning much more within reach.

Empty CanLid on Foam

The Cannular operates with a combination of manual lever pulling and electric motor spinning. You start the process out with an empty aluminum can with no top on it. You sanitize the can, fill it with beer, and then take a sanitized lid and set it down on top of the can (ideally on foam, to ensure minimization of air in your canned product). From there, it gets placed on a small pedestal and a lever turn raises the can up into the machinery of the can seaming operation and locks it at that height. The push of a button gets the motor spinning and the can on its platform starts spinning around. Grabbing a different lever, you push back and hold it for a couple seconds, then pull it toward you for a couple seconds, and you’re done. Turn off the motor, lower your can back down on the pedestal, and you’ve canned one beer.

Kegland Cannular Can and Bottle Filler

Those of us that have been in the hobby a while, typically keg our beer. It’s much less time consuming than bottling a batch of beer, and you can get your carbonation much more reliably. There is some pretty good gear out there to take your kegs mobile with you, but individual bottles/cans still have their place. Particularly if you’re sharing a batch of beer amongst friends. Bottles can be cleaned and reused multiple times without too much fuss. So even if you keg everything you make, if you’re sharing a batch, you’re probably pulling out the bottles and a bag of caps.

I’ve tried several different tools for bottling my beer. A beer gun kind of worked, but it required a lot of extra hoops to jump through to keep the beer under control enough to not end up with half a bottle of foam. The counterpressure bottle filler resulted in a good bottle of beer, but it could be a little messy at times and take longer than you may want to spend if you’re doing a large number of bottles. Kegland introduced a semi-automated Cannular Can & Bottle Filler, and it notably speeds up the bottling process. It can be used to fill either cans or bottles.

The Kegland Cannular Filler is a smallish unit that you mount to something. It has holes if you want to mount it to a vertical surface like a wall, or horizontal surface like a table. Since it fills your bottle/can hands-free, it needs to be attached to something that can support it while you’re doing something else. It has two ball lock posts- one for the incoming beer from your keg, and one for CO2 to purge the bottle before it starts to fill with beer. There’s a small digital LED screen readout and a couple buttons for you to adjust menu settings and lastly a “GO” button that begins the fill. The final control feature it has is a manual fill button that can be used if any fine-tuning is needed for unique bottle shapes, etc.

Integrated Ball Lock Connectors
The integrated ball lock connectors allow you to quickly attach your beer and gas ball lock disconnects. We recommend the use of the Duotight Ball Lock Quick Disconnects in Gas and Liquid to connect to these inputs and outputs.

Integrated Pinch Valve
The integrated pinch valve is one of the things that makes this unit far superior to other filling machines. The pinch valve enables you to easily remove the beer line for cleaning so the stainless tube, silicone hose, and yellow ball lock cap removes completely and can be put into the dishwasher or cleaned in the sink. The pinch valve is mechanically simple and therefore reliable. It is not subject to small particles like hops getting stuck in the device and eliminates the need for pre-filtration. It simply pinches down on the silicone tube to shut off the flow. This design also enables laminar flow that reduces foaming. The pinch valve improves reliability, makes it easier to operate, and a piece of cake to clean.

Integrated Regulator
Other filling machines require an external regulator that may need to drop the pressure lower than your normal keg dispensing pressure. Unlike these other fillers, this filler has an integrated regulator which saves time and setup costs. This integrated regulator means you will not damage your machine by accidentally connecting it to a high-pressure gas source. You can hook up your gas line without the need for another external regulator or to fool around with your gas supply at all. Just set the integrated regulator once during setup and forget about it.

Multi-Purpose
The long stainless tubes and adjustable height make this device useful for pretty much any bottles up to 11.8″ (30cm) high or cans up to 10.6″ (27cm) high. It can also be used for still or carbonated beverages, so this device is useful for wine bottles, beer cans, champagne, crown seal bottles, and pretty much any other bottle/can/vessel that has a neck opening greater than 0.59″ (15mm). It can also be used for filling glasses, jars, or other vessels.

Fill Profiles
Some other machines require a full calibration to change from one vessel type to another. This machine allows you to pre-save fill profiles depending on what you are doing. Save a filling profile for your 12 oz cans and then save a different filling profile for your 750mL wine bottles. Use our pre-saved presets or alternatively make your own fill profiles with different purge times and fill height. These are also synced with the RAPT.io portal so you can save profiles and share them with friends or deploy them to several other devices.

RAPT.io Connected (via WiFi)
As well as all the features above, this filler connects to your WiFi and keeps track of your Cans Per Minute (CPM), fill speed, and even temperature (if you purchase the external Instant Read Temperature Probe separately). It will log all usage information so you can keep track of how your machine is running or even keep track of your staff to make sure they are cycling the machine at an acceptable rate. The connectivity to the RAPT.io portal will enable you to more easily change settings, update profiles, and keep track of your fill days so you can historically keep track of how your fill day went and which day you processed each batch.

Low DO Pickup
The quality and longevity of your beverage are often defined by how well you keep oxygen off your product. This filler purges the oxygen out of the can and will enable you to get substantially lower dissolved oxygen.

Wall Mounted Design
This type of can and bottle filler has primarily been designed for wall-mounting configuration. This allows you to bring a can or bottle up to the filler from the underside of the unit. To wall mount this unit you can download and print this template.

Whether you’re a brewery looking to offer canned beer to go or a homebrewer wanting to keep your creations fresh and fully protected from light, the Cannular is the answer. This bench top unit is one of the most compact and easy to use can seamers you’ll find. The Cannular only requires one person to operate, and each can takes roughly 5 seconds to seam. With a two-person team, one filling and one seaming, the Cannular becomes a suitable option for nano breweries doing small canning production runs.

Operation:
The beauty of the Cannular lies in how truly simple it is to operate. With only three points of operation, it only takes a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the machine. The seaming process is as follows:

Place lid atop the can and place the can on the platform
Turn the platform lever clockwise to raise the can to the seamer
Press the button to turn the machine on and begin spinning the can
Push the seaming lever away from you and hold for 1-2 seconds
Pull the seaming lever towards yourself and hold for 1-2 seconds
Press the button to turn off the machine and stop spinning the can
Turn the platform lever counterclockwise to lower the can
That’s all there is to it!

Construction:
The Cannular was designed to be compact, durable, and safe to operate in a wet environment. The platform assembly is made from 304 grade stainless steel, so no matter how messy your canning gets, there’s no need to worry about rusting or degradation. The body of the unit is made from hammered sheet metal and bolted together with stainless steel screws. Rubber feet help keep the unit from slipping and sliding while in use. Additionally, the Cannular features built-in brackets near the feet so you have the option to mount the machine to your counter or benchtop. The Cannular runs off of 24v DC power via the Anderson socket located on the back. This lower voltage was chosen specifically to make the unit as safe to use in a wet environment as possible.

Power:
As noted above, the Cannular comes with a 24v DC Anderson socket located on the back of the unit. It does not, however, include a cord and plug. When purchasing the unit, you’ll have the option of pairing it with either a power supply with 110v plug, or with a 6 ft. long cord with Anderson plug and alligator clips. The power supply is straight forward, and allows you to plug the unit into a standard 110v power socket. The alligator clips give you the option to power the unit from a battery, and can even be used with an 18v cordless power drill battery. This is certainly the most affordable option for powering the Cannular, and we’ve found that upwards of 200 cans can be seamed on a single battery charge.

Why Cans?
So why can when you can bottle? There’s no doubt that canning has become a more and more popular format for packaging beer among craft breweries over the last several years, and with good reason. Aluminum cans aren’t just more environmentally friendly than bottles, since cans require less energy to transport and recycle, they’re also much better at protecting the quality of the beer. Whereas bottles allow in light, which leads to skunking, aluminum cans offer 100% protection from UV and other wavelengths of light that are harmful to beer. There’s still great debate surrounding whether cans or bottles are better at keeping beer fresh, but if done correctly, cans are theoretically the superior option. When a crown cap is crimped onto a bottle, the lining of the cap can form an imperfect seal on the bottle, allowing small amounts of oxygen in, as well as small amounts of CO2 out. Over time this can result in oxidation of the beer and lost carbonation. Seamed cans, on the other hand, form a much better seal that can prevent these issues. Of course, it’s important to make sure that the can is purged of oxygen before being filled, and that the can lid is sealed atop foam to eliminate oxygen from the headspace. Aside from all the “sciency stuff”, cans are just plain safer. Take your beer backpacking, camping, or poolside and rest assured that broken glass won’t ruin your day!

As with many homebrewers, my experience with the hobby began with making a boxed kit on my stovetop with about 50 bottles of drinkable beer when all was said and done. It was enough to keep me coming back, advancing in skill and acquiring equipment as time went on. I realized quickly that bottling was my least favorite part and was looking forward to ditching the bottles and getting into kegging. This change was one that made a big impact as far as increasing enjoyment of the hobby for me – that and getting out of stovetop brewing and into an electric brewing setup.

Inevitably, I found myself in the situation where I still needed to fill a few bottles from time to time, mainly for competitions. Now that I was kegging all my beer, I wanted an option that wouldn’t interrupt that practice too much. The Nukatap Counter Pressure Bottle Filler will have your precious cargo packed and ready at the drop of a hat! Slip it right into the nozzle of your Nukatap, Intertap, or other forward-sealing faucet to fill bottles right from the tap. Gas can be quickly connected using a bare end of 8 mm OD EVABarrier tubing, or connect the included Ball Lock Adapter to hook up gas using a Ball Lock Quick Disconnect. Not enough room under your draft tower? No problem! Like the gas-in port, you can swap out the push-in spout for the Duotight adapter, allowing you to connect tubing directly to the filler, or connect a Ball Lock Post Adapter and use a Ball Lock jumper line to fill right off your keg. While other fillers on the market force you to purchase upgrade accessories to improve functionality, the Nukatap Filler gives you more options to fill right from the get-go.

This unit is designed to fill multiple sizes of beer bottles up to 500 mL thanks to the telescopic filling stem. We recommend starting with it fully extended, then insert the stem till your at the bottom of the bottle, purge the bottle with CO2, then press the stem all the way in to form a seal on your bottle.

Counterpressure filling is the absolute best option for packaging beer from your keg without affecting its quality. From HBF: Make sure the components you use are compatible and rated for your intended application.  Contact manufacturer with questions about suitability or a specific application.  Always read and follow manufacturer directions.

 

Applications:

  • PET Bottles as Growlers: These are generally intended to convert 1L and 2L bottles to growlers.  Fill up a 1L or 2L PET bottle with your favorite homebrew.  Put one of these on (purge the headspace by squeezing if you want to) and then pressurize for transport.  This should help to reduce oxygen pickup and maintain carbonation levels.
  • Fine tune or rapidly carbonate beer: You can also use this cap to rapidly carbonate beer.  Same process as for transport, just set your regulator to the proper pressure and shake or agitate the PET bottle to help introduce CO2.  Or hook it up to CO2 and let it sit in you kegerator.
