Announcing: BlowTie Diaphragm Spunding Valve WITH Gauge

BlowTie Diaphragm Spunding Valve with Gauge from MoreBeer

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

The Blow Tie Spunding Valve is used to release excess pressure on a pressurized fermenter or from a receiving keg during pressure transfers. This diaphragm spunding valve is much more accurate than the spring and poppet style, and works much better at lower pressures.

The BlowTie 2 features an integrated pressure gauge so you can quickly and easily dial in your pressure setting. The gauge is removable and can be swapped out with a gauge of a different pressure range.

Pressure Fermentation

Pressure fermentation is becoming more and more popular at the homebrew level, but in order to do it safely and accurately you need a way to release excess pressure. You’ll pressurize your vessel to your desired psi, but once fermentation begins and those hungry, active yeast start creating CO2, the pressure inside the vessel will increase. Attach a spunding valve and set it to your desired pressure, and it will blow off when the pressure gets too high and close up again when it’s back to your desired psi.

Pressure Transfers
Even if you don’t have a pressurizable fermenter, you may have done pressure transfers from keg to keg during filtering or after fining. During pressure transfers, it’s a good idea to have a bit of head pressure in the receiving keg, especially if you’re transferring beer that is already carbonated. Having a spunding valve in place will allow you to consistently control the head pressure and give you more consistent results, without losing carbonation in the process.

Diaphragm vs. Poppet
With the poppet style spunding valve, a spring pushes against a poppet to keep the valve closed. When the poppet lifts up to open, the surface area the gas pushes against becomes larger, and the spring has to work harder to push the poppet down and reseal the valve. This can lead to more gas being released than intended, and the remaining pressure in your vessel may be at a lower psi than your spunding valve’s set psi.

Instead of a poppet, the spring inside the BlowTie pushes against a diaphragm, which has an immensely larger surface area. This means the surface area that the gas pushes against while the diaphragm is closed is significantly closer to the surface area it pushes against when the diaphragm is open. This leads to higher accuracy, and the remaining pressure after excess gas is released will be much closer to your set blow off pressure.

Set Up
The BlowTie spunding valve comes with 8 mm Duotight fittings on the inlet and outlet, and we recommend using it with EVABarrier 8 mm OD tubing (D1717 or D1718). You’ll also need the flare Duotight fitting (DUO106) in order to attach it to a ball lock or pin lock disconnect. Dialing in your desired pressure is even easier with the BlowTie 2, thanks to the integrated pressure gauge. Simply start with the adjustment knob fully closed, then slowly open it until the gauge reading matches your desired pressure setting.

Specifications:

  • Made from food grade acetal
  • Stainless screws
  • Easily disassembles for cleaning
  • 8mm (5/16″) Duotight fittings at both ends
  • Interchangeable pressure gauge
  • Gauge reads from 0-23 psi

WARNING: Do not exceed gauge pressure. Exceeding the pressure range will damage the gauge.

  • DuoTight Fittings and Accessories along with EVABarrier Tubing are… awesome.  In my opinion, the system is a game-changer for kegerator owners and builders.
  • The BlowTie is part of that lineup.
  • This is v2.  The big innovation is that v2 includes and integrated gauge.  Check out my Hands on Review of the v1 BlowTie Valve
  • Get Free Shipping: This ships for free with a qualify order as part of MoreBeer’s Free Shipping Program.  Under that promo most orders over $59 ship for free.
  • Easy Filler Item….  If you’re looking for a filler item to help you qualify for free shipping, consider grabbing some PBW

Spunding Valve Build: Using Primefit CR1401G Replacement Air Regulator

A Spunding Valve allows you to maintain a set pressure.  If pressure in the vessel exceeds the set point, it is expelled.  It generally consists of an adjustable PRV valve, a tee, a gauge and a way to connect to your keg.  Read lots and lots more about Spunding Valves, ways to use them and different build options on our Spunding Valve Resource Post

Most of our builds consist of a PRV Valve + tee + gauge + connection option.  Generally four parts in total.  The build detailed in this post utilizes Primefit’s CR1401G Replacement Air Regulator.  That one piece replaces the tee and gauge.

The components I used for this build.  See below for parts list.A look at the Primefit CR1401G Replacement Air Regulator with steel-Protected Gauge, 1/4″ NptThe completed assemblyBottom view of the completed assemblyA top down look at the assembly.  For a Spunding Valve application the red pressure knob clearly visible here is not particularly helpful.  The PRV is doing the heavy lifting.  I set this to full flow.Another version utilizing the a BlowTie PRV valve.

Primefit CR1401G Build – Spunding Valve Parts List

Product pages may display other size variations of the fittings used here.  If a particular size is out of stock, sometimes suppliers link to another size.  All thread sizes for this build, both NPT and barbs, are 1/4″.

BlowTie PRV Option

This option requires a BlowTie Diaphragm Valve + a small piece of 8 mm” ID EVABarrier Tubing + a Duotight 8mm ¼” NPT Adapter

Brewer’s Edge Paintball 0-12 PSI Mini Regulator – $44.99, Save $25 via William’s Brewing

Paintball 0-12 PSI Brewer's Edge® Mini Regulator

Paintball 0-12 PSI from William’s Brewing

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Take your beer with you when you go to the beach, camping, a game, or to a party. Our Paintball Tank Mini Regulator fits any standard C02 paintball tank (sold and refilled at sporting goods stores) without the need for adapters.

The system is built around a 0-12 psi C02 regulator that features precise adjustment. This is the regulator to choose if you plan on dispensing your beer and want precise dispensing pressure control, and do not plan on carbonating, which requires higher pressures of 15 to 25 PSI.

The flared outlet on the side can be attached to any threaded female ¼” flare fittings, such as our D03 Gas Connector. Change it into a ¼” hose barb if desired by ordering our D66 Barbed Adapter. The regulator is 3 1/8″ tall when not attached to a Paintball tank.

The regulator does not include a needed C02 paintball tank. These can be purchased at many large box retailers and sporting goods stores, and can also be filled and refilled at these stores inexpensively. They generally come in sizes ranging from 12 ounce to 24 ounce, with 20 ounces being the most popular.

  • As of this posting, William’s Brewing has this on sale for just $44.99.
  • Shipping is free or reasonably priced flat rate to addresses in the lower 48 states depending on your order size for most items.

BlowTie Diaphragm Spunding Valve Complete Kit – $31.49 w/coupon + Hands on Review

BlowTie Diaphragm Spunding Valve Complete Kit

BlowTie Diaphragm Spunding Valve Complete Kit

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

With this complete kit you’ll be ready to use the BlowTie Spunding Valve right out of the box. The BlowTie is used to release excess pressure on a pressurized fermenter or from a receiving keg during pressure transfers. This diaphragm spunding valve is much more accurate than the spring and poppet style, and works much better at lower pressures.

Pressure Fermentation
Pressure fermentation is becoming more and more popular at the homebrew level, but in order to do it safely and accurately, you need a way to release excess pressure. You’ll pressurize your vessel to your desired psi, but once fermentation begins and those hungry, active yeast start creating CO2, the pressure inside the vessel will increase. Attach a spunding valve and set it to your desired pressure, and it will blow off when the pressure gets to high and close up again when it’s back to your desired psi.

DuoTight Compatible Plastic Carbonation & Line Cleaning Ball Lock Caps – $5.99 + Free Ship Eligible

Carbonation and Line Cleaning Ball Lock Cap - Plastic FE133

Carbonation and Line Cleaning Ball Lock Cap – Plastic via MoreBeer

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

This plastic ball lock cap features soda bottle threads, allowing you to convert a 1 or 2 liter soda bottle into a convenient travel growler. The ball lock is compatible with both gas and beverage disconnects, so you can charge the PET bottle before you leave the house and dispense on the go. Attach 3/16″ or 1/4″ ID tubing to the barb to serve as your dip tube and you’re all set!

These caps also work great for quickly and conveniently cleaning your draft lines. Mix up a small batch of line cleaning solution in a soda bottle, attach the ball lock cap, and then connect it to your beverage line. Place a bucket below your tap to catch the cleaning solution and open your faucet. Then simply turn the bottle upside down and squeeze it to push solution through your line and out the faucet. You can also choose to pressurize the bottle first, but squeezing the solution through is just as effective.

Fermenting with the FermZilla? This is the same ball lock fitting included with the FermZilla Pressure Kit and it’s also compatible with the FermZilla Collection Container. If you use the collection container to add dry hops, attach one of these caps and you’ll be able purge the container of oxygen before opening the dump valve to introduce the hops. Attach some tubing and diffusion stone and you can oxygenate your wort through the collection container as well!

The barb is Duotight compatible. If you’d like to use the cap with 8 mm OD EVABarrier tubing, see DUO100.

For a stainless steel option see KG500.

  • PET Bottles as Growlers: These are generally intended to convert 1L and 2L bottles to growlers.  Fill up a 1L or 2L PET bottle with your favorite homebrew.  Put one of these on (purge the headspace by squeezing if you want to) and then pressurize for transport.  This should help to reduce oxygen pickup and maintain carbonation levels.
  • Fine tune or rapidly carbonate beer: You can also use this cap to rapidly carbonate beer.  Same process as for transport, just set your regulator to the proper pressure and shake or agitate the PET bottle to help introduce CO2.  Or hook it up to CO2 and let it sit in you kegerator.
  • Flushing Carboys, Fermenters and Kegs – As a piece of tubing the barb, hook to your CO2 line and use this to flush receiving vessels wiht CO2 to reduce O2 pickup.
  • Draft Line Cleaning Projects:  I have developed two draft line cleaning projects using similar (but different) caps – Build A Recirculating Draft Line Cleaning Pump | Mark II Keg and Carboy Cleaner Draft Line Cleaning Pump Conversion

Inline CO2 Regulator [control each keg separately] + Hands on Review & Hacks

in Line Plastic RegulatorIn Line Plastic Regulator

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

  • A small barbed regulator for use with liquid or gas
  • Made from acetyl, nitrile, brass and stainless steel parts
  • Controls pressure from 0 – 150 psi
  • Includes 3/16 inch

Notes from HBF: This is an inline secondary regulator.  You still need a primary regulator attached to your CO2 tank.  The idea is, you set the primary to the highest pressure you will use (without exceeding specifications of any component of your system) and then use these regulators inline (one per line) to fine tune pressure and carbonation [See: Balancing Your Draft System].  As an example, you could set your primary to 25 PSI for faster force carbonation and set each line to a different pressure based on desired carbonation level.  Since this does not have a gauge, you need some sort of a gauge to use for tuning this in.  The gauge doesn’t have to stay connected, just while you’re setting the regulator.  This is a perfect application of a Spunding Valve [See: Build a Spunding Valve! – How and Why]

One of My Favorite Gadgets: Inline CO2 Regulator [control each keg separately] – $5.99

Inline Secondary Regulator via MoreBeer!

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

An ideal solution if you want to serve different beers at different gas pressures. In a typical multiple line, multiple pressure system you would run a gas line from you main regulator into a secondary regulator where you would set different pressures. While that is ideal it is a little pricey. This little sweetheart lets you set different pressures at a far lower cost. What we do is set the main regulator at the highest pressure we want in the system – for example a keg of soda that you want to carbonate and serve at 25 psi. Run the gas line into a manifold and then install one of these after the manifold on each line where you want to decrease the pressure, for example lowering to 10psi to serve your British pale ale and 14 psi to serve your summertime lawnmower lager.

While this unit does not have a pressure gauge you can use an adjustable relief valve/spunding valve on your keg to tell the pressure. Pressure adjusments can be made with a screwdriver.

The maximum inlet pressure is 150 psi. Made from non corrosive acetyl, nitrile, and stainless parts. The regulator comes with two brass barbs to fit 3/16″ tubing on. Alternatively, you can remove the barbs and use 1/4″ tubing directly on the regulator. The aluminum manifolds linked above feature 1/4″ barbed outlets and are a good match with this regulator.

  • Works with 0 – 150 psi
  • Works with both gas and liquid
  • Comes with two brass barbs
  • Has two mounting points
  • Made from non corrosive acetyl, nitrile, and stainless parts

But Why??

  • This thing is awesome: This is an inline secondary regulator.
