Ss Brewtech Sspunding Valve - Scaled (Up to 3BBL) FE892B

Ss Brewtech Sspunding Valve – Scaled (Up to 3BBL) via MoreBeer

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

The Sspunding Valve from Ss Brewtech allows you dial in the precise pressure at which you want your Unitank fermenting. A spunding valve is essentially an adjustable pressure relief valve. Normal PRVs that are found on kegs, couplers and come stock on Ss Unitanks, operate as safety features that will release pressure when it’s nearing dangerous levels. Spunding valves, on the other hand, allow you to set the release pressure much lower. Simply dial in your desired fermentation pressure, and the Sspunding valve will release excess pressure when it gets too high.

The scaled Sspunding valve includes an etched sleeve with a scale between 0-2 BAR, along with a pressure calibrated spring. This version is perfect for a home or nano brewer that wants to be able to dial in pressures on the fly without having to match the release pressure using a gauge. The scaled version also features a pressure release knob to quickly and easily verify or equalize tank pressure. If you’re looking for a more affordable option, check out FE892A for the non-scaled version.

The polycarbonate cup is designed to hold sanitizer so that the tank remains 100% sanitary throughout the course of the fermentation process.

You can pair the spunding valve with a 1.5″ tri-clamp tee (H666) and 90-degree elbow (H667), which enables the unit to be installed on the Unitank’s blow off arm, as shown in the photo.

All 304 Stainless Construction
Only for use with pressure rated Unitanks
1.5″ TC interface
Removable sanitizer cup
Easy disassembly for cleaning
Not for use on low pressure vessels (Chronicals, etc.)

For Your Safety: Always leave the fixed-pressure PRV included with the Unitank in place. Never exceed the maximum rated working pressure of the vessel at any time during operation.

Spunding Valve Applications

  1. Pressurized fermentation.  Ferment in a 5 or 10 gallon corny keg and use your Spunding Valve instead of an airlock.  This allows you to ferment at your desired pressure.
  2. Dry hop under pressure.  This allows you to dry hop earlier while reducing oxygenation.  Active yeast are more likely to metabolize oxygen that’s introduced during dry hopping during active fermentation.  Since CO2 is not exiting beer as vigorously under pressure, wanted compounds, flavors and aromas are more likely to stay in your beer under pressure.
  3. Naturally and accurately carbonate beer right in the keg.
  4. An airlock replacement.  Keep the valve wide open for non-pressurized fermentations.  Only do this if you have plenty of head space.  This wouldn’t make a great blow off tube.
  5. Keg to keg transfers.  Use the Spunding Valve to allow excess gas to exit the receiving keg as you transfer under pressure.  Helps you achieve a slow, controlled and pressurized transfer.
  6. Fix over-carbonated beers.  Use the same general process as for carbonation (skipping the addition of fermentable sugar).  Use a carbonation chart to determine proper pressure for the temperature the keg is at.  The Spunding Valve allows excess pressure to vent until the new carbonation level is achieved.  You can agitate the keg to fix carbonation more quickly.
  7. Test for keg leaks.  Pressurize your keg to serving pressure.  Put the Spunding Valve on (with the pressure set well above your serving PSI) and note the reading.  The gauge should remain steady.  If pressure drops, you know you have a keg leak.  It’s worth noting that this checks the entire keg including gas body o-ring.  That spot is hard to check and other way as it’s only in function when the gas QD is on.  When the gas QD is on… it’s difficult to spray and check for bubbles underneath the gas QD.  Thanks to Scott Janish for this tip!
  8. As an airlock for long term aging of beers.  Airlocks can run dry over time.  A Spunding Valve will not.

A Spunding Valve allows you to ferment under pressure, naturally and precisely carbonate in the keg, fix over-carbonated beers and lots more. See: Build a Spunding Valve – for loads of information on building and using a Spunding Valve.

Brand New Universal Replacement Keg Lid by Beverage Factory [Ball Lock & Pin Lock]

Beverage Factory BLL-N-AUS Replacement Lid for Home brew Keg

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

This is a universal replacement lid for home brew/soda kegs. BRAND new lid comes with closure O-Ring pressure release Valve with sturdy 1 inch metal ring to relieve pressure out of your keg.

One difference between Pin Lock and Ball Lock kegs is the type of lids that come with each.  Ball Locks, generally, have a manual PRV valve, while Pin Locks do not.  Ball Lock style lids are, in my opinion, superior because the manual PRV allows you to easily vent your keg as needed.  The good news is that, for standard kegs, the lids are the same size and can be interchanged.  That means you can use a Ball Lock style lid in a Pin Lock Keg.  See: What’s the Difference Between Ball Lock Kegs and Pin Lock Kegs?

Inline CO2 Regulator [control each keg separately] + Hands on Review & Hacks

in Line Plastic RegulatorIn Line Plastic Regulator

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

  • A small barbed regulator for use with liquid or gas
  • Made from acetyl, nitrile, brass and stainless steel parts
  • Controls pressure from 0 – 150 psi
  • Includes 3/16 inch

Notes from HBF: This is an inline secondary regulator.  You still need a primary regulator attached to your CO2 tank.  The idea is, you set the primary to the highest pressure you will use (without exceeding specifications of any component of your system) and then use these regulators inline (one per line) to fine tune pressure and carbonation [See: Balancing Your Draft System].  As an example, you could set your primary to 25 PSI for faster force carbonation and set each line to a different pressure based on desired carbonation level.  Since this does not have a gauge, you need some sort of a gauge to use for tuning this in.  The gauge doesn’t have to stay connected, just while you’re setting the regulator.  This is a perfect application of a Spunding Valve [See: Build a Spunding Valve! – How and Why]

Inline CO2 Regulator [control each keg separately] – $8.99 + free ship eligible & Hands on Review & Hacks

Inline Secondary Regulator via MoreBeer!

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

An ideal solution if you want to serve different beers at different gas pressures. In a typical multiple line, multiple pressure system you would run a gas line from you main regulator into a secondary regulator where you would set different pressures. While that is ideal it is a little pricey. This little sweetheart lets you set different pressures at a far lower cost. What we do is set the main regulator at the highest pressure we want in the system – for example a keg of soda that you want to carbonate and serve at 25 psi. Run the gas line into a manifold and then install one of these after the manifold on each line where you want to decrease the pressure, for example lowering to 10psi to serve your British pale ale and 14 psi to serve your summertime lawnmower lager.

While this unit does not have a pressure gauge you can use an adjustable relief valve/spunding valve on your keg to tell the pressure. Pressure adjusments can be made with a screwdriver.

The maximum inlet pressure is 150 psi. Made from non corrosive acetyl, nitrile, and stainless parts. The regulator comes with two brass barbs to fit 3/16″ tubing on. Alternatively, you can remove the barbs and use 1/4″ tubing directly on the regulator. The aluminum manifolds linked above feature 1/4″ barbed outlets and are a good match with this regulator.

  • Works with 0 – 150 psi
  • Works with both gas and liquid
  • Comes with two brass barbs
  • Has two mounting points
  • Made from non corrosive acetyl, nitrile, and stainless parts

Hands on Review: Kegland BlowTie Spunding Valve!

BlowTie v2 w/Gauge that has been updated to digital, see below for walk through of that process.

Updated: 5/15/2024

A Spunding Valve allows you to maintain a set pressure. If pressure in the vessel exceeds the set point, it is expelled. It generally consists of an adjustable PRV valve, a tee, a gauge and a way to connect to your keg.

Why a Spunding Valve?

There are loads of homebrew related applications for a Spunding valve ranging from pressurized fermentation to naturally carbonating to fixing over carbonated beers and lots more.  Check out our resource post on the subject.  It’s arguably the go-to resource on the Internet on the subject

BowTie v1 Assembly

BlowTie v1 & v2!

This review covers both the original v1 Kegland v1 BlowTie & v2. Both are DuoTight compatible. The biggest difference is v2 has an integrated gauge, where v1 required an add-on gauge.

Kegland BlowTie v2

Kegland BlowTie v1

BlowTie v1 assembly that has been updated to digital, see below for walk through of that process.

But first, more about DuoTight!

Kegland’s DuoTight Fittings are designed to work with EVABarrier Double Wall Tubing.  They offer quick, reliable connections, easy implementation, a variety of fitting options and feature amazing versatility.  They’re also, generally speaking, very well priced.  DuoTights are push to connect fittings and require no tubing clamps.

Check out my extensive Hands on Review

Check out the end of this review for a list of all of my DuoTight related reviews and resource posts.

Hands on Review Kegland BlowTie Spunding Valve v1

The BlowTie Spunding Valve assembly consists of the BlowTie, a DuoTight Tee Fitting, a DuoTight to flare fitting, a DuoTight pressure gauge and two small pieces of EVABarrier Tubing.

The BlowTie is the heart of this build.  It has DuoTight Push to Connect connections on both side as well as an adjustment knob to set pressure.  Related: DuoTight Hands on Review. Continue reading

Inline CO2 Regulator [control each keg separately] – $8.09 w/sitewide sale + Hands on Review & Hacks

Save on Kent System Soda Bottle Carb Caps and QDs

Kent Fittings - Shut-Off QD Set (1/4 in. Barb & Soda Bottle Cap) H482

Kent Soda Bottle Caps and QDs via MoreBeer

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Use this quick disconnect set to seal a soda bottle under CO2 pressure. An ideal way to bring homebrew to a party without all the accessories.

  • A single-handed connection and disconnection
  • Strong plastic that can handle 250 degrees, very durable, and is medical-grade compliant and made from FDA approved material
  • Easy installation into your home brewery
  • KENT Systems quarter turn design functions safely

TIP N’ TRICK: Add a CO2 tee inline with your current CO2 setup and install the H481 Kent Shut-Off Female QD w/ 1/4 in Barb included. This way you always have access to CO2 accessible to put your beer under pressure before leaving for the party.

Uses:

  • PET Bottles as Growlers: These are generally intended to convert 1L and 2L bottles to growlers.  Fill up a 1L or 2L PET bottle with your favorite homebrew.  Put one of these on (purge the headspace by squeezing if you want to) and then pressurize for transport.  This should help to reduce oxygen pickup and maintain carbonation levels.
  • Fine tune or rapidly carbonate beer: You can also use this cap to rapidly carbonate beer.  Same process as for transport, just set your regulator to the proper pressure and shake or agitate the PET bottle to help introduce CO2.  Or hook it up to CO2 and let it sit in you kegerator.

The Kent System Is Unique!

This system is unique for a couple reason.  First it’s comprised of two components (most caps are a single piece).  One piece threads onto the bottle, the other is a QD that has a barb and connects to your CO2 system.  Because of this two piece design you can use one QD with loads of caps, reducing costs vs traditional one piece designs.

A second thing that sets this system apart is… it’s the only solution I’m aware of that works with pin lock QDs, or better stated without the need for ball lock QDs.  Since this is barbed in can hook to any compatible CO2 line no matter if you use ball lock or pin lock QDs.

As of this posting, MoreBeer has the Cap and QD set for $9.99, while extra caps are $4.99. Shipping is free with a qualifying $59 order to many US addresses. Price, promotions and availability can change quickly.  Please note that product prices and availability are subject to change.
