PET Bottles as Growlers: These are generally intended to convert 1L and 2L bottles to growlers. Fill up a 1L or 2L PET bottle with your favorite homebrew. Put one of these on (purge the headspace by squeezing if you want to) and then pressurize for transport. This should help to reduce oxygen pickup and maintain carbonation levels.

One of the questions that arises on these type of carb caps, is… does it work with both liquid and gas posts? Some models are universal fit and some work only with gas posts. For draft line cleaning projects to work well, at least in my opinion, the carb cap that’s used needs to be universal. I’m happy to report that the one I received did indeed work with both liquid and ball lock posts. Check product description for current specs.

I ran across this carbonation cap and thought it was interesting because it sports a different design than a lot of the ones we see. The body has a textured/knurled finish that looks like would make it easier to tighten and loosen compared to smooth wall style designs. Most of the smooth wall design make up for it by including a notch that you can put a wrench on tighten and loosen.

Building a Digital Spunding Valve

A Spunding Valve allows you to maintain a set pressure. If pressure in the vessel exceeds the set point, it is expelled. It generally consists of an adjustable PRV valve, a tee, a gauge and a way to connect to your keg. Building a digital Spunding Valve is as simple as using a digital gauge in your Spunding Valve Build.

digital spunding valve I tried a couple different digital gauges and settled on this one – pictured in the assembly above. The other gauge I tried was much more expensive and didn’t really work well. It drifted wildly. This was a reasonable price and has given me accurate and consistent readings. This photo shows two gauges hooked up to the same keg – agreeing on PSI.

The really nice thing about this digital gauge is the .1 PSI resolution. That’s really handy if you’re using the gauge to try and find leaks. It allows you to see pressure changes more quickly.

My gauge came with this user manual/specifications sheet – front | back. One quick tip… the threads aren’t super long. The first time I put this digital Spunding Valve together, I noticed the pressure dropping, again… the .1 PSI resolution is handy for spotting just this issue! Anyway, I didn’t have the gauge quite tight enough and it was showing a slow leak. Easy fix, I took the gauge off, put a couple extra wraps of teflon tape around it and tightened it a little more. Whammo!

Make a ball lock keg out out of PET plastic bottles. Great for taking beer to a party or making your own mini keg system with a 2 liter soda bottle.

This tee piece enables you to attach both a liquid and gas ball lock disconnect to the bottle at the same time so you can essencially use a common PET bottle as a keg. Very handy with a two liter soda bottle, as you can get a short length of ¼” interior diameter silicone tubing, attach it to the top Carbonation Cap (not included), fill with beer, and put in the refrigerator, either upright or sideways.

Or if you have Nukatap or Intertap faucets on your draft system, make a draft system cleaner – fill a soda bottle with beer line cleaner, attach an optional ball lock adapter to the end of your Intertap/Nukatap Faucet, and open the faucet to force cleanser into your draft beer system and down the lines.

Note: This is for the tee piece only. You need a soda bottle with standard PCO 1881 thread, 2 item C35 Carbonation Caps, and some ¼” interior diameter tubing to complete your soda bottle keg conversion.

The BlowTie is a diaphragm based adjustable spunding valve used to release pressure from kegs and other pressure vessels. It features a usable range of 4 to 15 PSI, and the diaphragm construction means it has a wider pressure range than spring based spundling valves. This unit can be easily disassembled for cleaning using a phillips head screw driver. Accuracy of the gauge is plus or minus 2 PSI.
