Potential Uses:

  • PET Bottles as Growlers: These are generally intended to convert 1L and 2L bottles to growlers.  Fill up a 1L or 2L PET bottle with your favorite homebrew.  Put one of these on (purge the headspace by squeezing if you want to) and then pressurize for transport.  This should help to reduce oxygen pickup and maintain carbonation levels.
  • Fine tune or rapidly carbonate beer: You can also use this cap to rapidly carbonate beer.  Same process as for transport, just set your regulator to the proper pressure and shake or agitate the PET bottle to help introduce CO2.  Or hook it up to CO2 and let it sit in you kegerator.

These take the place of traditional priming sugar.  Carbonation tabs are also handy if you keg, but still want to naturally carbonate a few bottled beers.  In that scenario, you would keg the majority of your beer and bottle portion of the batch adding these to each bottle so that you can skip a bottling bucket and traditional priming sugar.

This 8mm Duotight compatible regulator with 0-60 PSI gauge fits 8mm outer diameter EvaBarrier tubing. Suitable for gas, all components are food grade. The included gauge is accurate to plus or minus 6 PSI.

Note: This unit comes with a 0-60 PSI gauge that is only ¾” in diameter. If you intend to use this regulator in the 10 to 30 PSI range, you will need to order optional gauge C93, which reads 0-30 PSI. Below 10 psi, this regulator is not very accurate. You will also need EvaBarrier tubing to connect this regulator, either our item number Z91 or Z92.

This is perfect for reducing the pressure of one gas line in a draft system – for example, with a single regulator and C02 bottle, you can set the pressure at the C02 bottle with the larger regulator (not included) and then put this regulator inline to reduce the pressure. Handy for when you want to carbonate one keg at 25 PSI and dispense another at 10 PSI.

Canada Edition… Build a Spunding Valve! – How and Why

A Spunding Valve allows you to maintain a set pressure.  If pressure in the vessel exceeds the set point, it is expelled.  It generally consists of an adjustable PRV valve, a tee, a gauge and a way to connect to your keg.

This is a version of our Spunding Valve Build that features components that are generally available in Canada.

Homebrewing Applications of a Spunding Valve

  • Pressurized fermentation.  Ferment in a 5 or 10 gallon corny keg and use your Spunding Valve instead of an airlock.  This allows you to ferment at your desired pressure.
  • Dry hop under pressure.  This allows you to dry hop earlier while reducing oxygenation.  Active yeast are more likely to metabolize oxygen that’s introduced during dry hopping during active fermentation.  Since CO2 is not exiting beer as vigorously under pressure, wanted compounds, flavors and aromas are more likely to stay in your beer under pressure.
  • Naturally and accurately carbonate beer right in the keg.
  • An airlock replacement.  Keep the valve wide open for non-pressurized fermentations.  Only do this if you have plenty of head space.  This wouldn’t make a great blow off tube.
  • Keg to keg transfers.  Use the Spunding Valve to allow excess gas to exit the receiving keg as you transfer under pressure.  Helps you achieve a slow, controlled and pressurized transfer.
  • Fix over-carbonated beers.
  • Test for keg leaks.  Pressurize your keg to serving pressure.  Put the Spunding Valve on (with the pressure set well above your serving PSI) and note the reading.  The gauge should remain steady.  If pressure drops, you know you have a keg leak.  The digital build, see below, is especially helpful for this task,  The digital gauge reads with .1 PSI resolution making pressure changes easy to spot.  It’s worth noting that this checks the entire keg including gas body o-ring.  That spot is hard to check and other way as it’s only in function when the gas QD is on.  When the gas QD is on… it’s difficult to spray and check for bubbles underneath the gas QD.  Thanks to Scott Janish for this tip!
  • As an airlock for long term aging of beers.  Airlocks can run dry over time.  A Spunding Valve will not.
  • Utilize CO2 from fermentation for flushing kegs and fermenters.

An all stainless male ball lock valve coupling cap that fits a 2 liter or smaller plastic soda bottle with a 28mm screw cap lid. This allows the 2 liter bottle to be charged with C02 from any female ball lock gas fitting (like our item D32 or D03 Gas Connector), carbonating the cold beverage in the bottle. Great for serving draft beer away from the keg. Also fits the Brewzilla in and out ports on the lid, and the Brewzilla Collection Jar ports for pressurizing the Brewzilla fermenter.

You can also fill this with sanitizing or line cleaning solution, put some ¼” tubing on the barb, and use it with a 2 liter PET bottle as a line cleaner for kegs and draft systems. To do this, fill the PET bottle 1/3 full of cleaning solution, screw on the cap with tubing affixed, and inject with C02 to pressurize. Then use a beer ball lock fitting with a ¼” hose attached and use this to rinse your beer faucet nozzle first, or use a piece of hose with two beer ball lock barbed fittings, and make a jumper to clean the beer side of kegs.

This has a integral hybrid ball lock post that will accept beer and gas lines. A tradeoff of this design means when you use a grey ball lock gas fitting to charge your bottle, the grey fitting will leak if you leave it on. This is designed to quickly charge with gas and then remove the gas ball lock fitting, it is not designed to have a gas line attached for any length of time. This works for its intended use, which is a quick charge with gas and then having the ability to attach a beer dispensing line with a black beer ball lock fitting. You can affix 1/4″ interior diameter beer tubing to the interior gas post which will serve as a beer pick up dip tube during dispensing if desired (order a foot or so of our item S31, 1/4″ beer tubing if you want to do this).

You can also purchase our P53 Gas Post for Corny Keg if you want a gas post on this fitting that will not leak gas when attached for a longer period, although this eliminates the ability to also attach a black beer side ball lock fitting.

A potential homebrew application for this is to use it as part of a Spunding Valve Build.   A Spunding Valve allows you to ferment under pressure, naturally and precisely carbonate in the keg, fix over-carbonated beers and lots more. See: Build a Spunding Valve for more on Spunding Valves.

One of the questions that arises on these type of carb caps, is… does it work with both liquid and gas posts?  Some models are universal fit and some work only with gas posts.  For draft line cleaning projects to work well, at least in my opinion, the carb cap that’s used needs to be universal.  I’m happy to report that the one I received did indeed work with both liquid and ball lock posts.  Check the product description for current specs.

  • PET Bottles as Growlers: These are generally intended to convert 1L and 2L bottles to growlers.  Fill up a 1L or 2L PET bottle with your favorite homebrew.  Put one of these on (purge the headspace by squeezing if you want to) and then pressurize for transport.  This should help to reduce oxygen pickup and maintain carbonation levels.
  • Fine tune or rapidly carbonate beer: You can also use this cap to rapidly carbonate beer.  Same process as for transport, just set your regulator to the proper pressure and shake or agitate the PET bottle to help introduce CO2.  Or hook it up to CO2 and let it sit in you kegerator.
