Cleaning Multiple Kegerator Lines at the Same Time

Regularly cleaning beer lines is an important part of serving tasty beer from your kegerator. Homebrewers use a number of methods to accomplish this from removing tubing to soak in cleaning and sanitizing solutions to DYI pumps to commercial solutions.

Saving Time by Cleaning Multiple Lines

Being able to clean multiple lines at the same time is a big time saver. In years past this would have involved stringing together multiple fittings or partially disassembling your setup.

For ball lock keg users – Ball Lock vs Pin Lock – there is an easy solution available that allows you to clean multiple lines at the same time with minimal effort.

Valuebrew Stainless Steel Ball Lock Jumpers – Hands on Review

This allows you to connect multiple ball lock kegerator runs by simply snapping them into the jumper. There are a few similar models available. Valuebrew’s features stainless steel construction, food grade o-rings and… it works with both gas and liquid QDs.

Here’s the jumper in action. I’ve tried this with both my Recirculating Draft Line Cleaning Pump and Simple Ball Lock Draft Line Flushing Setup

This makes connecting two lines very simple. Connect the two ball lock lines and push cleaning solution through one of your faucets.

How about 3 or more lines? The QD side is easy, you’ll need 1 jumper for 2 lines, 2 jumpers for 3 lines and so on. For the faucet side, you need to cut a small piece of tubing to jump between faucets as needed. Keep in mind that each line you add increases resistance. Your pump may do great with two or three lines, but as you add lines, it will have to work harder.

Flushing Lines with CO2: This jumper allows you to connect liquid AND gas lines. That means you can flush lines with CO2 to push out any remaining cleaner or sanitizer and purge O2. Cleaned > Rinsed > Sanitized, Dried and Purged lines! Make sure to use a low pressure that’s compatible with all components in your system if you do this.

How About Pin Lock and Sanke Setups?

This a male beer thread jumper. You would unthread tail pieces and use these jumpers to connect lines together. This is a bit more work that the ball lock jumper for ball lock setups and it wouldn’t include all of your faucets, but it’s a good choice of you use pin lock or sanke connections.

Applications:

PET Bottles as Growlers: These are generally intended to convert 1L and 2L bottles to growlers. Fill up a 1L or 2L PET bottle with your favorite homebrew. Put one of these on (purge the headspace by squeezing if you want to) and then pressurize for transport. This should help to reduce oxygen pickup and maintain carbonation levels.
Fine tune or rapidly carbonate beer: You can also use this cap to rapidly carbonate beer. Same process as for transport, just set your regulator to the proper pressure and shake or agitate the PET bottle to help introduce CO2. Or hook it up to CO2 and let it sit in you kegerator.

One of the questions that arises on these type of carb caps, is… does it work with both liquid and gas posts? Some models are universal fit and some work only with gas posts. For draft line cleaning projects to work well, at least in my opinion, the carb cap that’s used needs to be universal. I’m happy to report that the one I received did indeed work with both liquid and ball lock posts. Check the product description for current specs.

I use a similar pump (different manufacturer, features and specifications) for a recirculating draft line cleaning setup. Note that fittings sizes are different on this pump vs the one I use in that build. Adjust accordingly Another possible homebrewing application would be to set this up for use a part of a recirculating wort chiller setup.

Potential Uses: Help with cleanup on brew day, make your kegs shine like new (see photo below) and use around the kitchen and for BBQ. I use similar gloves when I apply rub for smoking meats. It helps to prevent against cross contamination and I also like that it helps keep my hands from smelling like… bbq rub. Normally on smaller submersible utility pumps, I would suggest that potential applications are part of a draft line cleaning setup, or as part of a recirculating chiller setup.

At 9,000 GPH this is probably way too powerful for a draft line cleaning setup. Recirculating chiller setup? Maybe. Another potential application would be as part of a keg and carboy cleaning build.

Potential Uses:

PET Bottles as Growlers: These are generally intended to convert 1L and 2L bottles to growlers. Fill up a 1L or 2L PET bottle with your favorite homebrew. Put one of these on (purge the headspace by squeezing if you want to) and then pressurize for transport. This should help to reduce oxygen pickup and maintain carbonation levels.
Fine tune or rapidly carbonate beer: You can also use this cap to rapidly carbonate beer. Same process as for transport, just set your regulator to the proper pressure and shake or agitate the PET bottle to help introduce CO2. Or hook it up to CO2 and let it sit in you kegerator.

I use them for drying brew day gear and glassware and also underneath my fermenter in my fermentation deep freeze to improve airflow and keep the fermenter out of any condensation that might show up). I use similar mats (different model, manufacturer and specs) and find them very handy. I use them for drying brew day gear and glassware and also underneath my fermenter in my fermentation deep freeze to improve airflow and keep the fermenter out of any condensation that might show up). I also use this in bottom of my kegerator.

The ones I use are meant for bar/food use and these are floor tiles, so you’d probably want to limit use to non-food applications like flooring and lining your kegerator or fermentation chamber.
