Kemphos 2001 Chlorinated TSP from William’s Brewing:

Kemphos 2001 (CTSP Pink) is a chlorinated Trisodium Phosphate cleaner with a unique color indicator – the solution mixes as pink, and if put in brewing equipment that is dirty and full of organic deposits, will turn light yellow. Use this indicator by noticing the color of the solution as it exits your equipment – if is still pink, the equipment is clean, but if yellow, your equipment needs further cleaning.

Best of all, it includes chlorine, which is marketed in countries outside the USA as an effective sanitizer*. Instead of using something like PBW® and Star San®, use this as a one step clean before brewing. While you are calculating this in your head, consider the cost of cleaners like PBW® and Star San® combined compared to the single purchase of Kemphos 2001.

This cleaner is versatile, and can be used as a general cleaner, and also works well as a beer line cleaner with its color changing indicator.

CAUTION: This contains chlorine, and stainless steel contact should be limited to 8 hours or less to prevent possible corrosion.

I use a similar pump (different manufacturer, features and specifications) for a recirculating draft line cleaning setup. Note that fittings sizes are different on this pump vs the one I use in that build. PET Bottles as Growlers: These are generally intended to convert 1L and 2L bottles to growlers. Fill up a 1L or 2L PET bottle with your favorite homebrew. Put one of these on (purge the headspace by squeezing if you want to) and then pressurize for transport. This should help to reduce oxygen pickup and maintain carbonation levels.
Fine tune or rapidly carbonate beer: You can also use this cap to rapidly carbonate beer. Same process as for transport, just set your regulator to the proper pressure and shake or agitate the PET bottle to help introduce CO2. Or hook it up to CO2 and let it sit in you kegerator.

PBW is an oxygen based cleaner, much like Oxiclean, but it contains some other ingredients including including surfactants and a chelating agent. These make PBW more effective than oxygen based cleaner alone. Surfactants lower the surface tension of water. That aids the process of removing soils.

Oxiclean Versatile Free (and other percarbonate cleaners) are popular homebrew cleansers. One way to super oxi cleaners is to add a surfactant like TSP.

The general ratio that’s floating around is 30% TSP and 70% Oxiclean. Use 1 oz by weight of that mixture per gallon. So, for one gallon that would be .3 oz TSP and .7 oz Oxiclean.

How Often Should You Clean Lines?

The Draught Quality Beer Manual says… every two weeks.

That recommendation is for a commercial operation. What about homebrewers? We serve far fewer beer on our kegerators, but on the other hand, we can have been on tap and in lines 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Considering all of this, my recommendation is every 1 to 2 months.

Potential Uses: Help with cleanup on brew day, make your kegs shine like new (see photo below) and use around the kitchen and for BBQ. I use similar gloves when I apply rub for smoking meats. It helps to prevent against cross contamination and I also like that it helps keep my hands from smelling like… bbq rub.
