Save on Recently Announced: Old Ale Brand Ball Lock Compatible Keg Dip Tube O-Rings

The vast majority of ball lock kegs use a standard size dip tube o-ring. We’ve found that some Old Ale brand ball lock kegs – sold from Northern Brewer, Adventures in Homebrewing, Midwest Supplies and Austin Homebrew Supply – require a larger size dip tube o-ring. We’re happy to announce we have an option for owners of these kegs!

Note that we’re not 100% sure this applies to every Old Ale brand keg. Our best guess is that the product changed over time so this affects some but not all Old Ale brand kegs. We recommend getting these along with some standard size dip tube o-rings. That way you’ll be covered either way.

“Dairy Approved” Keg O-Rings

Beverage Elements carries “Dairy Approved” keg o-rings.

To my knowledge there are at least a couple standards for food grade orings. Actually these standards don’t just apply to o-rings, they apply to all materials that would touch the food or beverage.

  • NSF/ANSI Standard 61 is a safety rating for materials used to distribute or treat water.
  • FDA/CFR Title 21 part 176-177 outlines acceptable materials used with food and beverage storage.

Dairy approved materials most likely fall under the FDA food safe provision as milk would be considered a food or beverage (and not drinking water).

All that to say… Beverage Elements is charging $5.95 per keg lid o-ring, Valuebrew is much less expensive and their entire lineup is FDA rated for food contact.

Low Stock… Food Grade EPDM Keg LID O-Rings

Keg Lid O-Rings - FDA Rated EPDM

EPDM for Homebrewers!

Valuebrew has announced the availability of bulk EPDM o-rings for homebrewers.  EPDM is a favorite of many pro brewers for certain applications. Until now, these have not been available to homebrewers, or at least easily available. EPDM has some real advantages over silicone. One of the big ones is a much lower permeability. That means they seal better and since they’re less porous they are more resistant to absorbing off-smells and off-flavors.

They are FDA Rated for food use and NSF61 certified. As of this posting, post, dip tube, lid and internal QD options are available in 10, 25 and 50 count options. Valuebrew has struggled mightily with availability and they’ve already made some indications of potential issues with new EPDM offerings. In particular, the lid o-ring description says they received a small shipment.

Valuebrew has struggled with availability on some of their options.  This has been particularly true of their keg lid o-rings. As of this update stock is showing low for EPDM lid.

These work with all standard Ball Lock and Pin Lock homebrew kegs.

Ever wonder what other universal poppet o-rings are made of? Us too, after all this is one of the most high contact o-rings in you draft beer setup. We took matters into our own hands and worked with our suppliers to source a 304 Stainless Steel + Food Grade Silicone option. Stainless steel construction on all the metal parts and premium quality food grade silicone for the o-ring.

Our pledge to you… Let’s face it, the stainless pieces in most universal replacement poppets should last a long, long time. How about the o-rings? Not so much… lost, broken, cracked, off smell. This is where our pledge comes in… we’ll always carry replacement o-rings for these universal poppets. No need to guess what size replacements to buy or completely replace your universal poppets because you don’t have a reliable source for replacements.

 

I use universal style poppets exclusively when rebuilding kegs. Finding the right OEM specific replacement poppets can be a chore. Beyond finding the right part number, these can be prohibitively expensive. Paying $10 to $14, or more, for an OEM poppet isn’t fun. In fact, if you really had to pay that, it may not even make sense to keep the keg.

I’ve long advocated to tossing OEM o-rings immediately. You don’t know what they’re made of, and you can’t get replacements. Color Code Keg Post O-Rings for Easy Identification:

Valuebrew carries two color schemes to color keg posts. Doing this allows you to quickly identify keg posts. Gray and Black match standard keg QD colors. Blue and Green are meant to be remembered by “Blue for Beer” and “Green for Gas”. All options are made from FDA rated silicone. Since they work equally well on gas and liquid posts you can also mix and match to come up with your own color coding standard.
