One difference between Pin Lock and Ball Lock kegs is the type of lids that come with each.  Ball Locks, generally, have a manual PRV valve, while Pin Locks do not.  Ball Lock style lids are, in my opinion, superior because the manual PRV allows you to easily vent your keg as needed.  The good news is that, for standard kegs, the lids are the same size and can be interchanged.  That means you can use a Ball Lock style lid in a Pin Lock Keg.  See: What’s the Difference Between Ball Lock Kegs and Pin Lock Kegs?

Hands on Review: Torpedo Keg Buoy Floating Dip Tube!

Torpedo Keg Buoy Floating Dip Tube

In the world of continuous improvement, you’ll find changes to things that you didn’t think needed improvement. If they’re good improvements, they’ll change how you use it. The floating dip tube was one of those unexpected changes to the simple homebrew keg. The keg has so few pieces to it, and has such a simple job. It’s surprising that they took something as boring as a metal tube and found something creative and new to do with it.

Contents of Package

The dip tube is the passageway for the beer from inside the keg to outside. The standard dip tube is all about being in the right position at the end of the beer- at the bottom to get the last drop of beer out. The floating dip tube turns that upside down and instead of being at the bottom the whole time, sits at the top of the beer as the level continuously changes. The rigid steel tube is replaced by flexible silicone tubing with the open end attached to a stainless float ball. The float then sits on the top of the beer, and as the beer level goes down, the float of course goes with it, and the tubing allows you to pull beer whether the keg is at its fullest or at its lowest.

Float Ball

The Torpedo Keg Buoy Floating Dip Tube starts with a short 2” tube. This tube goes into the keg with the same interface as a regular dip tube with a flared end and an o-ring that gets compressed when you screw down the keg post. Once that’s installed, you attach the 23.5” long silicone tubing from inside the keg. Lastly, the float has a short 1” length of stainless tube attached to it with a ring. The silicone tubing then slides over this short stainless tube to complete the setup. With this configuration, it pulls beer from the top, while the precipitate sinks down below it to the bottom of the keg.

My explanation of how this works…

When we carbonate a keg, pressure is being applied to the keg from the top, via the head space. Beer at the top carbonates first. That carbonation works it’s way down the keg. I’m sure there’s also some movement in the keg that helps to mix things up and distribute carbonation. But just sitting there, I think that mixing is a slow process. However it all works, practically speaking, the beer at the top carbonates more quickly compared to the beer at the bottom. This allows you to serve from the top accessing the more carbonated portion of the keg. It’s also a benefit for clarity because trub settles out heading downward. You can see this stratification in a glass carboy. As the beer starts to clear, the top clears first. I don’t think if this is exactly accurate, but I picture carbonation happening with the same sort of stratification until the beer reaches equilibrium and is equally carbonated throughout.

For whatever reason, it’s difficult to find food safe keg o-rings.  Maybe some of the o-rings that are available are food safe, but very few are actually labeled as such.

Color Coded Options:

Keg Post O-Rings - Food Safe Silicone - in BLUEValuebrew has recently released color coded options in blue and green.  These are sized for ball lock kegs.  For pin lock keg owners, Valuebrew suggests using your choice of color on the liquid post and pin lock size o-rings on your gas post.  The logic behind this is beer is less likely to leak and if it does… you’ll see it.  Where gas would be invisible and is more likely to leak.
