Hands on Review: KegLand Ball Lock Disconnect With Shank

Kegland is making some great stuff. Really well thought out, innovative and generally well-priced gear. When I see something new from Kegland I’m generally left with one of two responses, 1. I’ve been wanting something like this for a long time or, 2. I would have never thought of this tweak/product, it’s ingenious.

Kegland’s Ball Lock QD with integrated shank is par for the course. A really good idea. I’ll take a closer look at it in this review and also discuss the general idea behind this and similar solutions.

But first, what does a shank adapter do?

Corny Keg Faucet Adapters have been around for a long time. They allow a keg QD to connect to a compatible faucet. An MFL/male flare QD, ball lock or pin lock, connects to the FFL/female flare side of the converter. Basically you’re adding mini shank to your QD. Dandy!

Old style faucet converter and QDThis allows you connect a compatible faucet to a keg QD. No tubing necessary. Really nice for mobile serving and more.

Kegland’s Ball Lock QD with shank has a standard looking ball lock QD body. Instead of a flare or barb outlet it features and integrated shank and sleeve.

Torpedo Stainless Steel Ball Lock Disconnect with… 1/4 in. MPT Threads! – For Spunding Builds

Torpedo Ball Lock Disconnect Gas In (Stainless) - 1/4 in. MPTMoreBeer’s Torpedo Ball Lock Beverage Disconnects are available in both beverage and gas configurations and are… stainless steel! They will, of course, work with MoreBeer’s Torpedo kegs, but they will also work with any ball lock Corny Keg.

1/4″ MPT Threaded QD!

The lineup contains an innovative and unique offering. a 1/4″ MPT threaded variation.  Why, oh, why would you want this?  Well one great reason is a Spunding Valve Build.

To build what we call a Style 1 Build you need to connect the tee to an MFL QD, a swivel JIC to NPT fitting is required. Those are tough to find in stainless steel and usually… very expensive.

This Ball Lock Keg QD is stainless steel and eliminates the need for the JIC to NPT fitting. That’s a big cost savings. Beyond that, it’s a simplification of the build. One less item to buy, adjust and maintain.

Note that I’m seeing one review that says this doesn’t seal well. The thing I would say is that this is NPT thread that’s going to need teflon tape.

What’s a Spunding Valve? A Spunding Valve allows you to maintain a set pressure.  If pressure in the vessel exceeds the set point, it is expelled.  It generally consists of an adjustable PRV valve, a tee, a gauge and a way to connect to your keg.  Read lots and lots more about Spunding Valves, ways to use them and different build options on our Spunding Valve Resource Post

This ball lock QD has an integrated check valve.  This keeps beer from backflowing into your gas lines.  That’s handy in any installation, but I specifically recommend this style of gas QD for DuoTight Installations as they allow you to skip inline check fittings and really clean up your setup.  See my DuoTight Review for more on that.

Homebrew and Commercial Kegerators do the same thing.  They chill beer and allow you to serve it.  Each has lines for gas (typically CO2) and beer.  The only difficult thing about switching back and forth are the fittings and taps.

Commercial kegs use commercial keg couplers or taps.  These taps vary based on the brewery.  A typical style for US kegs is Sanke type D.  Commercial taps typically handle liquid and gas in single unit while homebrew couplers separate these out into gas and liquid quick disconnects.
