Why a two pressure regulator?  A two pressure regulator gives you the ability to keep kegs at different pressures.  This is a requirement to maintain two distinct carbonation levels.  It’s also handy if you want to force carbonate a keg more quickly, at a higher pressure, while maintaining your standard serving pressure on a keg that’s already being served or if you want to have a utility line for purging kegs and such.

Upgrade Your Kegerator – 6 Improvements!

kegerator upgrade ideasAfter years of faithful service in it’s current configuration, my beloved kegerator was in need of some upgrades and enhancements.

About My Kegerator:

  • My kegerator based on a 7-ish cubic foot Kenmore chest freezer.
  • I’ve installed a 10″ collar that hosts four faucets.  I’ve also used the collar as a mounting point for my four way CO2 manifold.
  • I have a dual pressure CO2 regulator.  One regulator body maintains what I call a house pressure, 10 PSI.  That body feeds the manifold and the manifold, in turn, feeds each keg.  The second regulator body is for tasks like flushing kegs, force carbonating more quickly or for a keg that I want to serve at a different carbonation level.
  • The gas side of my setup is QD based.  I can swap out or remove lines without turning off the CO2 tank.  The valved disconnects automatically shut off CO2 flow when disconnected.
  • I use a recirculating fan to keep a more uniform temperature.  See: Kegerator Beer Line Temperatures & Reducing Foam with a Recirculating Fan
  • I use an Eva-Dry E-500 to fix condensation – See: Damp Kegerator? Fix Kegerator Condensation

About the Upgrades

  1. I had been using a temperature controller from a now defunct manufacturer for a while. That was replaced by an ITC-308 Digital Dual Stage Temperature Controller – Hands on Review
  2. Inkbird Temperature & Humidity Smart Sensor IBS-TH1 – my previous controller, had the ability to log temperatures and I really liked that.  I added this to give me logging capabilities.
  3. Intertap Faucets and Accessories! – time to modernize my setup with these great faucets and accessories.  NukaTap Faucets (Intertap v2!) are also a great choice.
  4. DuoTight Fittings – DuoTight Fittings work in concert with EVABarrier tubing. This system of disconnects offers loads of flexiblity and features.  I’ve used multiple types of disconnect systems in previous versions of my kegerator and DuoTights are, by far, my choice.
  5. EVABarrier Tubing – This is an update to… this update. This post originally featured Ultra Barrier coiled tubing. That tubing was very expensive and has since become difficult to find. EVABarrier tubing is high-quality double walled tubing that offers protection against oxidation, CO2 loss and microbial growth. It’s BPA and PVC free.  EVABarrier is also very reasonably priced.
  6. San Jamar VM5280 Versa-Mat Interlocking Bar Mat, 12″ Length x 12″ – also available in different colors and quantities – search san jamar interlocking bar bat on Amazon – for the bottom of the kegerator.  I had already used a single square of this to set the CO2 tank on.  This upgrade including lining the entire bottom with this great mat. This measures three things that make it perfect for keeping a close eye on your kegerator,,,

  • CO2 levels – help spot CO2 leaks in your kegerator. See below

Using a layer of defense to detect against kegerator CO2 leaks…

Placing a CO2 Monitor with alarm inside of your kegerator can serve as another line of defense to protect against co2 leaks and loss. CO2 should not be building up in your kegerator. A CO2 monitor with alarm can alert you of this condition.

This is not a replacement for checking for CO2 leaks using traditional methods, rather a another layer that could save you a trip to swap out a CO2 tank.

This is similar in function to the Eva Dry E-500 – Hands on Review.  It contains desiccant beads that absorb moisture (in places like your kegerator).  The desiccant beads change colors as this takes place to let you know when the unit needs to be recharged.  Plugging in the unit activates the built in heater and drives off accumulated moisture. Unlike one time use solutions this is re-chargeable and re-usable.

The NukaTap Flow Control faucet features a forward sealing design with flow control. Forward-sealing faucets keep beer behind the sealing valve, making cleaning much easier. It also reduces off flavors spoiling the beer during the pour. Flow control allows the ability to set flow and

balance at the faucet head allowing you to adjust for all levels of carbonation without the worry of adjusting the Co2 regulator.

This faucet is similar to the Intertap line of faucets, but with better laminar flow and reduced first pour foam due to its lower thermal mass. The NukaTap works with all Intertap accessories with the exception of the self-closing spring. The NukaTap FC uses a specially designed self-closing spring.

Flow control faucets feature a built in flow compensator that allows you to adjust the resistance your faucet is exerting.  That means less tubing and potentially less foaming and wasted beer. The compensation feature also makes it easier to serve higher carbonation beers as you can set the faucet to provide resistance to offset the increased pressure needed to store and serve these beers at higher pressures.  Instead of replacing your beer line with ever increasing lengths of tubing, you simply turn a knob to increase resistance.

This is similar in concept to the Eva Dry E-500 – Hands on Review.  It contains desiccant material that absorbs moisture (in places like your kegerator).  The desiccant beads change colors as this takes place to let you know when the unit needs to be recharged.  This one differs from most of the models that we’ve featured on Homebrew Finds because instead of plugging in to drive off accumulated moisture you heat the Lockdown in the oven to recharge.

Why a two pressure regulator?  A two pressure regulator gives you the ability to keep kegs at different pressures.  This is a requirement to maintain two distinct carbonation levels.  It’s also handy if you want to force carbonate a keg more quickly, at a higher pressure, while maintaining your standard serving pressure on a keg that’s already being served or if you want to have a utility line for purging kegs and such.

Cold does not rise. You will find that a beer tower elevated above a refrigerator will always remain warmer than the refrigerator, resulting in initial pours from the kegerator that are warm and foamy, followed by colder pours once you have dispensed a beer or two. At home this is a real problem, unless you pour beers in quick succession. A tower cooling fan is standard equipment, with a fan on/off switch on the front digital control panel.

The beauty of the KegLand Series X.1 is the extended range thermostat included. Unlike kegerators with standard 30° to 50° temperature ranges, the Series X.1 can be adjusted easily with the front panel digital display from 26° to 82° F (ambient temperature permitting), which means you can also use your kegerator as a fermentation chamber for ales in summer, a small refrigerator for food items, or even a wine cellar. A removeable wire shelf is included in case you want to do this.  Keep in mind the unit only cools, and does not heat, and a temperature of say 65 degrees F. is only possible if the temperature outside the kegerator is 65 degrees or warmer.

The all stainless drip tray rests on top of the unit, and can be removed for easy cleaning. This simple two piece design cleans up quick in your sink, and eliminates the need to clean a sticky drip tray on the unit. It is 20″ long, long enough for all tower options including the 4 faucet T tower.

Included with all models are a a C02 bottle mounting bracket, our item Q62 Gas Regulator, and integral tower cooling fan.  You will need to provide a flat bottom 5 pound C02 cylinder (available at welding supply stores and fire extingisher service firms). You select the beer tower/faucet option that is right for you, or order the base unit without a tower if you already have one.

Setup is easy with Duotight connections included for everything from the faucet shanks to the optional regulator. These make it easy to connect and disconnect gas and beer lines, and eliminate the need for hose clamps. As noted below, you will need additional parts depending on how many faucets you get, and if you want to dispense home brew ball lock kegs ora commercial sanke kegs.

Please note: These all stainless units may arrive with very small cosmetic blemishes, scratches or dents incured during manufacturing and shipping which are unavoidable.  Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that your unit will not have any of the above mentioned blemishes. We  guarantee the cooling performance of the unit, and will repair or replace any unit at our discretion if it is damaged during shipping.

Important Installation Note: Series X.1 kegerators need 4″ of clearance on both sides and the back of the unit when installing so they do not overheat. This model cannot be installed flush into a countertop with no side clearance like a dishwasher. The side walls have radiators inside that dissipate heat, and they cannot be blocked. These are designed for indoor use, and a maximum ambient temperature of 90° F. or less.

Note: The Four Faucet Tower options should only be considered if you are dispensing home brew kegs, as this unit only holds three five gallon sankey commercial kegs.
