Why a Temp Controller?

Temperature controllers, sometimes referred to as over-riding thermostats, can control devices like refrigerators, freezers and fermentation heating devices to provide a consistent temperature for your kegerator, fermentation chamber or brew system. They do this by monitoring the temperature and cycling on and off the device in question. Generally, you will set the device to full cooling or heating power and the temperature controller takes over from there.

Possible uses include monitoring kegerator temperatures, beer fridge temperatures and fermentation chamber/area temperatures.

How Often Should You Clean Lines?

The Draught Quality Beer Manual says… every two weeks.

That recommendation is for a commercial operation.  What about homebrewers?  We serve far fewer beer on our kegerators, but on the other hand, we can have been on tap and in lines 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.  Considering all of this, my recommendation is every 1 to 2 months.

What Does a Flow Control Faucet Do?

In order to properly serve a pint of beer from your kegerator you need to have a balanced system.  You decide what carbonation level you’d like to serve and what temperature you want your beer to be and set a CO2 pressure based on those two factors.  To pour a proper pint, well carbonated without excessive foam, you need to balance your system.  Balancing offsets your set CO2 pressure with the proper amount of resistance.  Not enough resistance = fast pouring and excessively foamy beers.  Too much resistance = beer pours too slowly or not at all.   Each component along the way provides some resistance.  Typically most of the resistance comes in the form of adding more beer line.  More line = more resistance.  For a full rundown of this see: Step by Step Balancing Your Kegerator Draft System

What do flow control faucets do?

Flow control faucets feature a built in flow compensator that allows you to adjust the resistance your faucet is exerting.  That means less tubing and potentially less foaming and wasted beer. The compensation feature also makes it easier to serve higher carbonation beers as you can set the faucet to provide resistance to offset the increased pressure needed to store and serve these beers at higher pressures.  Instead of replacing your beer line with ever increasing lengths of tubing, you simply turn a knob to increase resistance.

Three Top Tips for Keezer Conversions! + Limited Deals on Chest Freezers

Chest freezers are great. They’re generally well priced and they’re space and energy efficient and can be easily had.

The primary idea with a chest freezer is to… freeze food. Also referred to as Deep Freezes, most models do not go through a defrost cycle. That’s a bummer come manual defrost time but outstanding for energy savings and food preservation.

You could use this to put together a freezer based kegerator/keezer (See: Tips and Gear for your Kegerator) or temperature controlled fermentation chamber.

Side note… Because of the lack of a defrost cycle, chest freezers are great for storing hops – our hop deals roundup

Many people including myself have repurposed chest freezers as kegerators or “keezers”.

What does Keezer mean?  Keezer = kegerator + freezer.

To do the conversion you basically add a compatible temp controller – Inkbird deals and reviews – that will allow you to operate a chest freezer at fridge temps.  After that add some taps, maybe a collar, some kegs and a CO2 tank and you’re off and going!

The problem: Chest freezers are generally meant to operate at freezing temperatures, not beer serving temps. This causes issues with condensation and airflow. Left unhandled these issues can cause other problems, like sanitation issues.

Through several iterations of my own keezer, I’ve experienced all of these problems. I have a library of tips and resources that specifically apply to serving draft beer, but these are the top three when it comes to keezer conversions.

Kegerator Tubing – Barbed vs Flare Fittings – what should you use?

I think that the general consensus among homebrewers and home kegerator builders is that… MFL/Flare/Swivel connections are superior to barbed connections.  That’s just my read on the situation, no scientific basis for that statement.  After all, MFL swivel thingies look cool, they’re easy to attach and you can take tubing on and off easily and.  The total solution, including swivels also generally costs more… more expensive = more better… right?

My take on the matter…

For gas lines: Personally, I prefer barb fittings on CO2 lines as they don’t loosen over time.  Use a quality clamp and you have a solid connection that should not loosen or leak over time.  Moving kegs and lines around could conceivably loosen MFL connections and a CO2 leak is invisible.  Even a small, slow leak could equal an emptied CO2 tank.

For liquid lines: A liquid leak is a lot more obvious.  A little dripping from a liquid MFL line would tell you that the line has loosened.  I generally use flare swivels on liquid lines.  I do still use barbs on tail pieces because that’s kind of a tight spot on my kegerator that makes it difficult to turn a wrench.

Of course you can use whatever you want.  If you use MFL, I suggest periodically tightening swivels to make sure you always have a good, solid connection.

4 Way Gas Manifold via MoreBeer

This manifold allows you to split a single tank into multiple runs and control each with an independent ball valve.  Each ball valve also contains a check valve that stops one beer from backflowing into another line.  Pressure changes can cause this to happen with a simple T-type system.  This manifold prevents the issue.  Grows with you!  This system can also expand as needed by adding an additional outlet.

Using a layer of defense to detect against kegerator CO2 leaks…

Placing a CO2 Monitor with alarm inside of your kegerator can serve as another line of defense to protect against co2 leaks and loss. CO2 should not be building up in your kegerator. A CO2 monitor with alarm can alert you of this condition.

This is not a replacement for checking for CO2 leaks using traditional methods, rather a another layer that could save you a trip to swap out a CO2 tank.
