7.6 Gallon Kegmenter Fermenting Keg

Ferment, carbonate and serve your delicious homebrew in the fantastic stainless steel Kegmenter. This 7.6 gallon capacity keg features a large 4″ tri-clover opening with a lid with ball lock posts and a pressure relief valve. The Kegmenter has a working pressure of 2.5 BAR or 36 psi, providing enough pressure to transfer your beer to another Kegmenter for secondary fermentation and clarification, carbonate your batch inside the vessel and dispense from your tap. A floating dip tube ensures your keg pours down to the last drop and the recessed design of the ball lock posts allow you to safely stack up to 4 Kegmenter. We recommend using two Kegmenters, one for fermenting and one for carbonating and serving. If it will take 2-3 weeks to consume the finished beer, you may want to move it to a fresh vessel to avoid leaving the beer on the trub for too long. A simple Keg Jumper (Available Here!) makes transferring easy. For any pressurized fermentation we suggest using an Adjustable Pressure Relief Valve (Available Here!).

Features:
– Ferment, Carbonate & Serve in One Vessel!
– 7.6 Gallon Capacity – Perfect for 5 Gallon Batches
– Stainless Steel Construction with 4″ Tri-Clover Opening
– Ball Lock Post Keg Lid with Pressure Relief Valve
– 36 PSI Working Pressure
– Stack Up to 4 Kegmenters

The Kegland Fermenter allows you to ferment and serve in the same vessel. It’s also pressure capable so you can ferment under pressure.

Hands on Review: Kegland 2.5 Gallon Ball Lock Kegs!

Updated: January 7, 2025

Kegland, based in Australia, produces a broad array of homebrewing gear. fermenters, electric brewing systems, loads of draft stuff (including DuoTight!) and lots more.

It’s obvious these folks are homebrewers at heart, because they’ve come up some really innovative stuff. The other thing they’ve generally done is hit really good price points. There is a balance between cost, features and quality and they seem to be hitting a lot of bullseyes.

This is an in depth hands on look at Kegland’s 2.5 gallon ball lock keg.

Why a 2.5 Gallon Keg?

2.5 gallon kegs are great for splitting batches, small batch brewers, doing one-off beers from split from a 5 gallon batch… or for easily serving on the go.  Purge with CO2, fill from your tap and place in ice in a 5 gallon bucket…. whammo! You can also use these in conjunction with an inline secondary as a CO2 source for portable serving.

Hybrid Keg – 1/6 bbl (5.17 gal) Sanke Valve w/ Removable Corny-style Lid

The hybrid keg is a sanke style keg with a sanke spear and coupler, but it features a removable lid. It’s the best of both worlds – a sanke keg with removeable lid!

Smaller scale operations can have a difficult time making the transition from corny kegs or disposable kegs to sanke kegs. That’s why the Hybrid Keg blends the best of both worlds. The Hybrid Keg features a removeable lids like a corny keg, but also has a sanke D spear allowing you to make the jump from ball/pin lock disconnects to standard keg couplers that are used at most bars and restaurants.

The Hybrid Keg removes the need to invest in expensive cleaning and filling equipment because its removeable lid make opening and cleaning the keg a breeze. Hands on Review: AMCYL Ball Lock Kegs!

Updated: November 24, 2024

AMCYL manufacturers compressed gas cylinders, kegs and brewing equipment.

According to AMCYL, as of this posting, their kegs are made of food grade 304 stainless and are NSF approved. They produce both sanke and ball lock style kegs. Their ball lock kegs are available in 2.5, 3 and 5 gallon sizes and come in single and double handle versions. This is a hands on look at the double rubber handle 5 gallon keg.

Hands on Review AMCYL Ball Lock Kegs

Here’s the box. This particular keg is showing as part # CK-N5-DRH-INX. Capacity 5 Gallons. Made in India.A look at the seam side of the keg. Generally speaking the body of a keg is cut from a sheet of stainless steel. A rectangle is bent into a cylinder and then welded. This vertical line is that weld.Close up of the T, where the vortical weld meets the top most weld.Top down view

Single Handle vs Double Handle: There are two main styles of keg handles – double rubber handles and single strap handles. I prefer double handles because… you’ve got two handles 🙂 and, more importantly, the even top means you can invert a keg to drain or dry and potentially stack kegs. Single strap handle kegs are tougher to invert, but they’re also generally a little less expensive.

Mini Kegs! from William’s Brewing

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

The KegLand Stainless Steel Mini Beer Kegs are specifically designed for home brewing/growler dispensing. They are suited to small batches and suited to people who want to fit them into their home refrigerators. You can naturally carbonate using priming sugars or force carbonate and serve your beer with the optional ball lock lid (item P07, see at right). They come with a silicone gasket sealed stainless threaded lid, so you can fill them with beer and let them naturally carbonate, or carbonate as needed with the optional P07 ball lock lid. You will be given a chance to buy this lid (you do not need a Ball Lock Lid for every keg) when you put this in your cart.

These fit into a standard domestic refrigerator. The optional Ball Lock lid for these kegs use a flexible silicone dip tube the kegs can also be dispensed on their side or upright. The flexible silicone dip tube of lid P07 is heavier than beer, and will sink to the bottom even if the kegs are on their side. Kegs are equipped with a 30 PSI relief valve, and have a maximum pressure of 45 PSI.

Kegland Mini Kegs use the gold standard acid bath electrolosis to pacify the 304 grade stainless steel making the more resistant to rust than any other mini keg on the market. These are the only mini keg that uses a special robotic technique to weld the kegs from the inside out. This means KegLand gets a superior welding finish that is more sanitary than any other mini keg available. Although there are many other mini kegs that come from China simply none have the quality and finish as the genuine KegLand minikegs.

  • William’s Brewing is discounting the entire lineup of Kegland Mini Kegs and Accessories by 10%.  No coupon code is required. Discounted priced reflected in cart.
  • Shipping is free or reasonably priced flat rate to addresses in the lower 48 states depending on your order size for most items.

Three Ball Lock Only Accessories

THREE Ball Lock Only Accessories

I’m aware of three accessories that, to my knowledge, are available for Ball Lock Kegs, but not available for Pin Lock Kegs. It’s worth noting that when I started this section, there was a single accessory. The list is growing. If you’re on the fence, this may be a tick in favor of ball lock kegs.

#1 Ball Lock Jumper

ball lock jumperAllows you to connect multiple ball lock runs to clean multiple lines and taps at the same time. Works with both liquid and gas QDs.  Stainless Steel Ball Lock Jumper – via Valuebrew

#2 Carbonation Caps

Carbonation Caps fit on 1L and 2L size PET Bottles and allow you to pressurize a PET bottle for transporting or preserving the carbonation level of your homebrew (Squeeze out the air in the headspace first to minimize oxygen pickup).  You can also use them to quickly carbonate homebrew and fine tune carbonation levels (maybe for competition entry) and… more.

Ball Lock Carbonation Caps:

#3 Ball Lock QD with Shank

This ball lock beer connector from Kegland features a shank collar to attach a faucet directly to the ball lock connector. Unlike the previous two ball lock only accessories, this one does have a work around… an MFL QD + Corny Keg Disconnect Faucet Adapter gets you there, albeit not as cleanly.

Hands on Review: AEB Italian Made Ball Lock Kegs!

Updated: January 7, 2025

AEB has been manufacturing stainless steel drums, tanks and… kegs in their facility in Andalo Valtellino, Italy for over 30 years.

AEB leans hard into their Italian roots… “THE MADE IN ITALY IS OUR IDENTITY” can be seen plastered on their website in all caps. If I were to take a read on homebrewing, my read is that the general sentiment is that AEB kegs are among the highest quality kegs available to homebrewers. Just a guess and certainly a generalization.

Hands on Review AEB Ball Lock Kegs

A look at the boxA.E.B. Made in Italy. AEB leans heavily on their Italian identity. That makes sense to me as I generally think Italian made = high quality. That’s a broad stroke, but my espresso machine was made in Italy and it’s amazing. So, fair or unfair, that’s where I’m at.Close up of the keg imprint. NSF P/N 29744PS, Max Capacity 5 GAL, Year 2020, A.E.B. Made in Italy, N 004420, Warning, Never Exceed Maximum Working Pressure of 130 PSI.

Tip: If you’re looking for replacement parts look for your keg’s imprint. It should show the manufacturer and model number.

Five Benefits of Using Corny Kegs As Fermenters

The containers we call Ball Lock and Pin Lock Kegs come from the soda industry.  Also called Cornelius Kegs, Corny Kegs and Corney Kegs, they were originally intended to store and distribute soda pre-mix.  The big soda companies decided on different style containers for their pre-mix.  Pepsi landed on the Ball Lock style while Coke uses the Pin Lock style.

Homebrewers have since re-purposed these as homebrew beer kegs. It makes sense. These high quality stainless steel beverages that are meant for years of commercial food use. They’re also tough, can be had for cheap and are easy to move around.

What if someone said there was a pressure capable, heavy duty stainless steel fermenter that could be had for 50 bucks or so?

Great news…. kegs make great fermenters! Same high quality, stainless steel construction, toughness and easy portability, but this time used for fermentation.

Lots More About Kegs

But First, How Do you Convert a Keg to a Fermenter?

One issue needs to be addressed to convert kegs into fermenters… handling CO2 produced by fermentation. Kegs are generally designed to be airtight. Fermentation requires that we allow excess CO2 to escape.  I can think of three options…

  1. A blow-off tube. Remove the gas post or gas post poppet and get use tight fitting tubing to route CO2 to a container of sanitizer.
  2. Use a converted lid to add a stopper and airlock See: Cornelius Keg Fermenter Lid via Adventures in Homebrewing
  3. Use a Spunding Valvesome of the technique and tricks mentioned in this post rely on a Spunding Valve

Keg Fermenter Sizing

A five gallon keg isn’t really suitable for a primary fermenter for a 5 gallon batch.  You could use it as a secondary for a full 5 gallon batch, as a primary fermenter for smaller batches (maybe 3 to 4 gallons max) or you could split 5 gallon batches between two kegs.

There is a 6 gallon keg available that should allow you to ferment a 5 gallon batch.

10 and 15 gallon size ball locks have become readily available at relatively reasonable prices. A 10 gallon keg could easily accommodate a full 5 gallon batch (up to 7 or 8 gallons) while a 15 gallon keg should be able to easily handle a 10 gallon batch (up to 12 or 13 gallons).

Five Unique Benefits to Using Converted Keg Fermenter!

Removing Hard to Remove Poppets

Hard to Remove Keg Poppets?

Some poppets seem to be almost installed permanently in keg posts. I think this is by design and that the reason they seem to be is because they… are. I don’t like those because they’re more difficult, potentially impossible, to clean and sanitize.

When I run into poppets like this I use a punch to dislodge the old poppet.  It usually doesn’t take a whole lot of force.

It’s noting that it’s possible that you could damage the poppet doing this. To me, that doesn’t matter a whole bunch to me since I’m going to replace them with Universal Poppets.

Also Consider: Universal Poppets – 304 Stainless + Food Grade Silicone! & Reliable O-Ring Replacements

universal poppetsValuebrew has released a 304 Stainless Steel + Food Grade Silicone Universal Poppet option!

I’ve long advocated for tossing OEM o-rings. I’m excited that there’s finally there’s an option that comes with quality o-rings made from the right materials out of the box! Beyond that, Valuebrew has pledged to always carry replacement o-rings, so you’ll always have a source when the time comes for replacements.

Hands on Review: Growler Sized Ball Lock Keg by Kegland!

Updated: October 18, 2024

Kegland Ball Lock Growler Keg!

I like growlers. I just like them. I have a lot of different designs ranging from basic glass and PET growlers to featured-filled mini kegs, vacuum insulated models, ceramic growlers and more.

As a growler-enthusiast… I have to say I’ve been waiting this thing to be made. Kegland’s KL20893 is a growler sized ball lock keg.

Because it’s a ball lock keg, it works with most existing ball lock keg parts and accessories.

A look at the top. This has a nice easy to hold strap handle. As you can see it sports a standard size keg lid.  To my knowledge this is the smallest available ball lock keg.A closer look at the handle and lid. This lid (like most ball lock style lids) is equipped with a manual PRV.  Generally speaking… Both Ball Lock and Pin Lock style lids are the same dimension and are interchangeable.  You can use a Ball Lock Lid on a Pin Lock Keg and vice versa.  A big difference are the PRV (pressure relief valve) functions between the two styles.  Both have automatic safety PRV valves.  That is, if the pressure gets too high, both will automatically vent for safety reasons.  The difference is in manual PRV functionality.  Ball Lock Keg lids have a pull ring that allows you to manually vent the keg as you’d like.  You may want to do that for the purpose of removing the keg lid or to vent excess pressure in an attempt to get down to a lower pressure.
