What’s the Difference Between Ball Lock & Pin Lock Keg Lids?

ball lock v pin lock lids

The containers we call Ball Lock and Pin Lock Kegs come from the soda industry.  Also called Cornelius Kegs, Corny Kegs and Corney Kegs, they were originally intended to store and distribute soda pre-mix.  The big soda companies decided on different style containers for their pre-mix.  Pepsi landed on the Ball Lock style while Coke uses the Pin Lock style.

Homebrewers have since re-purposed these as homebrew beer kegs.

There are a good number of differences between the two main styles of homebrew kegs, here’s a look at how the lids are different.

cln_img_3023Ball Lock Style Lid.  Notice the pull ring.  That is the manual PRV.cln_img_3025Pin Lock Style Lid.  No pull ring.

Generally speaking… Both Ball Lock and Pin Lock style lids are the same dimension and are interchangeable.  You can use a Ball Lock Lid on a Pin Lock Keg and vice versa.  A big difference are the PRV (pressure relief valve) functions between the two styles.  Both have automatic safety PRV valves.  That is, if the pressure gets too high, both will automatically vent for safety reasons.  The difference is in manual PRV functionality.  Ball Lock Keg lids have a pull ring that allows you to manually vent the keg as you’d like.  You may want to do that for the purpose of removing the keg lid or to vent excess pressure in an attempt to get down to a lower pressure.  Having a manual PRV valve is an advantage in my book and on this count Ball Lock Style kegs win.  Again, these are general statements, check with the keg’s manufacturer or distributor for specific keg lid dimensions and PRV functionality.  Note: There is another less common size of lid/keg called racetrack style.  Those are not interchangeable with standard lids.

An Easy Upgrade for Pin Lock kegs

New Cornelius Keg Lid with New pressure relief valve (lid o-ring included)Since standard Ball Lock and Pin Lock Lids are interchangeable.  A good upgrade for Pin Lock kegs is to replace Pin Lock style lids with Ball Lock Style Lids.  Ball Lock style lids are, in my opinion, superior because the manual PRV allows you to easily vent your keg as needed.

Get a Used Keg?… Replace Keg O-Rings

Replacing Keg O-Rings

When you get a used keg, in my opinion, you’re going to want to replace all the o-rings in your keg.  Generally speaking they are going to be worn out and even if they aren’t they’ll smell of soda pre-mix.  Beyond that, who knows what they’re made from.  Start with a clean slate.  As you saw earlier, the o-rings in this keg were a grubby mismatch of soda drenched o-rings.

Most of these o-rings are pennies each when bought in reasonable bulk quantities. It’s worth the small cost to start fresh with o-rings made from appropriate materials.

This write-up is part of my post on rebuilding kegsJump To This Section – If you look through the post you’ll see just how good the keg looks at the end.

Color Code Keg Posts for Quick Identification

Valuebrew has an exclusive color coded option for keg post o-rings.  Blue and Green.  These are sized for ball lock kegs (although there is a workaround for pin lock kegs, see pin lock section below).  You can use these however you’d like, but the idea is to color code you keg posts for easy identification.  They recommend Blue for Beer and Green for Gas.

Recondition Keg Handles & Bases with Armor All Protectant

Rubber Handles get dried out and can start to crack.  Kegs in this state also tend to leave rubber marks on everything and dirty up your hands quickly.  Armor All Protectant works great to reinvigorate rubber handles and bases.

A look at the clean and Armor All Treated Based.  Looking nice and shiny.

Removing Keg Labels… A Trick That Makes it Easy

As you can see from this photo, this keg had one sticker on it.  It mostly goes around the keg.  Trying to peel this sticker off yielded… 0 positive progress.  It was stuck on the keg, presumably for years.  The actual printing itself is completely warn away.   I was only able to get very small bits of this sticker off.

I wrapped my Fermwrap heater around the keg and let it warm up for several minutes.  The idea here is to warm up the sticker and the old adhesive to make sticker removal easier.

Make Your Kegs Shine with Bar Keepers Friend

Bar Keepers Friend is my go-to for deep cleaning stainless, kegs, kettles and such.

If your kegs are dirty, scuffed or have leftover adhesive, a thorough scrub with Bar Keepers Friend may be in order. Just use a scrubby pad or scrubby sponge along with some Bar Keepers Friend and go to work. I recommend using protective gloves.

How Often Should You Replace Keg O-Rings? – A Proposed Schedule for Keeping Kegs in Great Shape

Generally Speaking, I think you should replace all keg o-rings when you refurbish or obtain a used keg.

What about after that? Of course, you could just keep using them until they break, they smell or look horrible or… until you lose a tank of CO2 due to an o-ring related leak.

Hands on Review: Kegco 1 Gallon Ball Lock Kegs

Why Smaller Kegs?

Smaller kegs are good for small space kegging, splitting batches (easily try a variation of your larger batch), small batch brewers and for easily serving on the go.  Since this is smaller than most small kegs (usually 2.5 to 3 gallons), you could also use it to push cleaning and sanitizing solution without wasting a lot of CO2 pressurizing head space.

I bought this particular keg up because of it’s small size. It’s essentially a large growler. Because it’s ball lock, all the existing gear I have is compatible.

Hands on Review: Torpedo Ball Lock Kegs from MoreBeer

Updated: November 16, 2024

This review is by Homebrew Finds Contributor Brad Probert.  Brad is an engineer, expert homebrewer and experienced reviewer.  Grab a link to Brad’s website at the end of this review.

MoreBeer 6-Gallon Torpedo Keg

Keg Label

Sometimes ideas come along that seem so obvious in hindsight. Every fermentor I have is 7+ gallons. I like that because it gives me plenty of headroom for krausen from active fermentation. It also allows me to brew a bigger batch in the event I have a lot of dry hopping. But with the bigger fermentors, I will frequently have leftover beer after transferring to the keg. Not a lot, and not always, but it just feels wrong to leave that beer behind. So the 6-gallon keg is a logical fit for me.

Limited Time Deal!

MoreBeer has a massive early holiday sale going on as of this posting. Over 100 products are discounted. Check sale page for selection and availability.

MoreBeer Blowout Sale!

Select Torpedo Kegs are included in the mix!

Keg DiameterKeg Height Measurement

Torpedo Keg is a brand name of a series of ball lock kegs. They use the same size lid and follow the same standard of ball lock posts. But unlike Corny kegs that have rubber bottoms and tops, Torpedo kegs are made completely of stainless steel. The top/handle portion of the keg is taller, specifically to let you stack kegs on top of each other while still having gas and beer lines connected to the keg. There is also a Slimline version which has a slightly narrower diameter in exchange for a taller height. The 6-Gallon torpedo keg has a 9.125” diameter, and is 27.25” tall. In comparison, the standard ball lock Corny keg has an 8.375” diameter and 24.75” height. Although comparing these heights on paper can be deceiving since the Torpedo keg’s tall handles cover the height of attached ball lock fittings as well (additional 1.5” measured with my DuoTight fittings).
