Removing Hard to Remove Poppets

Hard to Remove Keg Poppets?

Some poppets seem to be almost installed permanently in keg posts. I think this is by design and that the reason they seem to be is because they… are. I don’t like those because they’re more difficult, potentially impossible, to clean and sanitize.

When I run into poppets like this I use a punch to dislodge the old poppet.  It usually doesn’t take a whole lot of force.

It’s noting that it’s possible that you could damage the poppet doing this. To me, that doesn’t matter a whole bunch to me since I’m going to replace them with Universal Poppets.

Also Consider: Universal Poppets – 304 Stainless + Food Grade Silicone! & Reliable O-Ring Replacements

universal poppetsValuebrew has released a 304 Stainless Steel + Food Grade Silicone Universal Poppet option!

I’ve long advocated for tossing OEM o-rings. I’m excited that there’s finally there’s an option that comes with quality o-rings made from the right materials out of the box! Beyond that, Valuebrew has pledged to always carry replacement o-rings, so you’ll always have a source when the time comes for replacements.

Hands on Review: Growler Sized Ball Lock Keg by Kegland!

Updated: October 18, 2024

Kegland Ball Lock Growler Keg!

I like growlers. I just like them. I have a lot of different designs ranging from basic glass and PET growlers to featured-filled mini kegs, vacuum insulated models, ceramic growlers and more.

As a growler-enthusiast… I have to say I’ve been waiting this thing to be made. Kegland’s KL20893 is a growler sized ball lock keg.

Because it’s a ball lock keg, it works with most existing ball lock keg parts and accessories.

A look at the top. This has a nice easy to hold strap handle. As you can see it sports a standard size keg lid.  To my knowledge this is the smallest available ball lock keg.A closer look at the handle and lid. This lid (like most ball lock style lids) is equipped with a manual PRV.  Generally speaking… Both Ball Lock and Pin Lock style lids are the same dimension and are interchangeable.  You can use a Ball Lock Lid on a Pin Lock Keg and vice versa.  A big difference are the PRV (pressure relief valve) functions between the two styles.  Both have automatic safety PRV valves.  That is, if the pressure gets too high, both will automatically vent for safety reasons.  The difference is in manual PRV functionality.  Ball Lock Keg lids have a pull ring that allows you to manually vent the keg as you’d like.  You may want to do that for the purpose of removing the keg lid or to vent excess pressure in an attempt to get down to a lower pressure. See: my post comparing ball lock and pin lock kegs – Jump Section on Lids – All that to say… Manual PRV = good.

A Pin Lock Carbonation Cap?

pin lock carbonation capPictured: Carbonation and Line Cleaning Ball Lock Cap – via MoreBeer

Carbonation Caps fit on 1L and 2L size PET Bottles and allow you to pressurize a PET bottle for transporting or preserving the carbonation level of your homebrew (Squeeze out the air in the headspace first to minimize oxygen pickup).  You can also use them to quickly carbonate homebrew and fine tune carbonation levels (maybe for competition entry) and… more.

A Pin Lock Carbonation Cap?

No.  I’m aware of no pin lock compatible carbonation cap. Beyond that, I’m aware of no DIY Pin Lock Carbonator Cap Build. I’d love that to change. Email me if you have something.

The only thing that’s similar that would work with a Pin Lock Keg is Kent System’s Soda Bottle Cap.  That has it’s own connector that would connect to tubing and in turn connect to a Ball Lock or Pin Lock QD.

Mini Kegs! from William’s Brewing

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

The KegLand Stainless Steel Mini Beer Kegs are specifically designed for home brewing/growler dispensing. They are suited to small batches and suited to people who want to fit them into their home refrigerators. You can naturally carbonate using priming sugars or force carbonate and serve your beer with the optional ball lock lid (item P07, see at right). They come with a silicone gasket sealed stainless threaded lid, so you can fill them with beer and let them naturally carbonate, or carbonate as needed with the optional P07 ball lock lid. You will be given a chance to buy this lid (you do not need a Ball Lock Lid for every keg) when you put this in your cart.

These fit into a standard domestic refrigerator. The optional Ball Lock lid for these kegs use a flexible silicone dip tube the kegs can also be dispensed on their side or upright. The flexible silicone dip tube of lid P07 is heavier than beer, and will sink to the bottom even if the kegs are on their side. Kegs are equipped with a 30 PSI relief valve, and have a maximum pressure of 45 PSI.

Kegland Mini Kegs use the gold standard acid bath electrolosis to pacify the 304 grade stainless steel making the more resistant to rust than any other mini keg on the market. These are the only mini keg that uses a special robotic technique to weld the kegs from the inside out. This means KegLand gets a superior welding finish that is more sanitary than any other mini keg available. Although there are many other mini kegs that come from China simply none have the quality and finish as the genuine KegLand minikegs.

  • William’s Brewing is discounting the entire lineup of Kegland Mini Kegs and Accessories by 15%.  No coupon code is required.
  • Shipping is free or reasonably priced flat rate to addresses in the lower 48 states depending on your order size for most items.

Homebrew Keg Post Sizes – Ball Lock & Pin Locks – Compatible Tools

homebrew keg post sizes

The containers we call Ball Lock and Pin Lock Kegs come from the soda industry.  Also called Cornelius Kegs, Corny Kegs and Corney Kegs, they were originally intended to store and distribute soda pre-mix.  The big soda companies decided on different style containers for their pre-mix.  Pepsi landed on the Ball Lock style while Coke uses the Pin Lock style.

Homebrewers have since re-purposed these as homebrew beer kegs.

There are a good number of differences between the two main styles of homebrew kegs, one of the big differences are the keg posts.

Sizes to Consider:

When it comes to sizes there are a couple things to think about.

  1. Wrench size. What size wrench or socket do I need to take off and install keg posts?
  2. Thread size and count. Depending on manufacturer and model the threads for these posts vary.

Post Wrench Sizes:

Ball Lock Wrench Size

There are two primary post sizes for standard ball lock kegs.  11/16″ and 7/8″.  These can come in both 6 point and 12 point, compatible variations.  For the larger 7/8″ posts I’ve seen both 6 point and 12 point styles.  A 12 point socket will work on a 6 point post, but not vice versa.  For the smaller 11/16″ posts I have only seen 6 point.  Not to say that 12 point don’t exist, I just don’t recall seeing any.  I have seen a couple other sizes – 5/8″ and 9/16″, but I would personally consider those more rare, and non-standard.

ball lock post sizes

This is important from a tool perspective.  I recommend a 12 point socket or wrench for larger 7/8″ posts.  Smaller 11/16″ post should work with either 6 or 12 point tools.

Pin Lock Lock Wrench Size

I’m aware of one standard size 13/16″.  As previously mentioned this requires a special notched socket.

Finding Compatible Tools:

Homebrew Keg Post Thread Sizes:

homebrew keg post types and sizes

Before you purchase any replacement posts for your keg, you’ll need to determine the brand/maker of that keg. You can figure this out by finding the stamp or markings on the side of the keg.

What’s the Difference Between Ball Lock & Pin Lock Keg Lids?

ball lock v pin lock lids

The containers we call Ball Lock and Pin Lock Kegs come from the soda industry.  Also called Cornelius Kegs, Corny Kegs and Corney Kegs, they were originally intended to store and distribute soda pre-mix.  The big soda companies decided on different style containers for their pre-mix.  Pepsi landed on the Ball Lock style while Coke uses the Pin Lock style.

Homebrewers have since re-purposed these as homebrew beer kegs.

There are a good number of differences between the two main styles of homebrew kegs, here’s a look at how the lids are different.

cln_img_3023Ball Lock Style Lid.  Notice the pull ring.  That is the manual PRV.cln_img_3025Pin Lock Style Lid.  No pull ring.

Having a manual PRV valve is an advantage in my book and on this count Ball Lock Style kegs win.  Again, these are general statements, check with the keg’s manufacturer or distributor for specific keg lid dimensions and PRV functionality.  Note: There is another less common size of lid/keg called racetrack style.  Those are not interchangeable with standard lids.

An Easy Upgrade for Pin Lock kegs

New Cornelius Keg Lid with New pressure relief valve (lid o-ring included)Since standard Ball Lock and Pin Lock Lids are interchangeable.  A good upgrade for Pin Lock kegs is to replace Pin Lock style lids with Ball Lock Style Lids.  Ball Lock style lids are, in my opinion, superior because the manual PRV allows you to easily vent your keg as needed.

Get a Used Keg?… Replace Keg O-Rings

Replacing Keg O-Rings

When you get a used keg, in my opinion, you’re going to want to replace all the o-rings in your keg.  Generally speaking they are going to be worn out and even if they aren’t they’ll smell of soda pre-mix.  Beyond that, who knows what they’re made from.  Start with a clean slate.  As you saw earlier, the o-rings in this keg were a grubby mismatch of soda drenched o-rings.

Most of these o-rings are pennies each when bought in reasonable bulk quantities. It’s worth the small cost to start fresh with o-rings made from appropriate materials.

Removing Keg Labels… A Trick That Makes it Easy

As you can see from this photo, this keg had one sticker on it.  It mostly goes around the keg.  Trying to peel this sticker off yielded… 0 positive progress.  It was stuck on the keg, presumably for years.  The actual printing itself is completely warn away.   I was only able to get very small bits of this sticker off.

I wrapped my Fermwrap heater around the keg and let it warm up for several minutes.  The idea here is to warm up the sticker and the old adhesive to make sticker removal easier.

How Often Should You Replace Keg O-Rings? – A Proposed Schedule for Keeping Kegs in Great Shape

Generally Speaking, I think you should replace all keg o-rings when you refurbish or obtain a used keg.

What about after that? Of course, you could just keep using them until they break, they smell or look horrible or… until you lose a tank of CO2 due to an o-ring related leak.
