I use Armor All Protectant to help rejuvenate keg rubber keg handles and bases. In my experience, it works wonders. The picture above is from my post on rebuilding kegs – Jump To: Section on reconditioning handles and bases – If you look through the post you’ll see just how good the keg looks at the end.
In my opinion, you’re going to want to replace all the o-rings in your keg. Generally speaking they are going to be worn out and even if they aren’t they’ll smell of soda pre-mix. Beyond that, who knows what they’re made from. Start with a clean slate. As you saw earlier, the o-rings in this keg were a grubby mismatch of soda drenched o-rings.

What Does Reconditioned/Rebuilt Mean?
The short answer is probably… nothing. I think reconditioned/rebuilt/refurbished are basically synonyms and there is no standard definition for any of these terms.

The KegLand Stainless Steel Mini Beer Kegs are specifically designed for home brewing/growler dispensing. They are suited to small batches and suited to people who want to fit them into their home refrigerators. You can naturally carbonate using priming sugars or force carbonate and serve your beer with the optional ball lock lid (item P07, see at right). They come with a silicone gasket sealed stainless threaded lid, so you can fill them with beer and let them naturally carbonate, or carbonate as needed with the optional P07 ball lock lid. You will be given a chance to buy this lid (you do not need a Ball Lock Lid for every keg) when you put this in your cart.
These fit into a standard domestic refrigerator. The optional Ball Lock lid for these kegs use a flexible silicone dip tube the kegs can also be dispensed on their side or upright. The flexible silicone dip tube of lid P07 is heavier than beer, and will sink to the bottom even if the kegs are on their side. Kegs are equipped with a 30 PSI relief valve, and have a maximum pressure of 45 PSI.
Kegland Mini Kegs use the gold standard acid bath electrolosis to pacify the 304 grade stainless steel making the more resistant to rust than any other mini keg on the market. These are the only mini keg that uses a special robotic technique to weld the kegs from the inside out. This means KegLand gets a superior welding finish that is more sanitary than any other mini keg available. Our pledge to you… Let’s face it, the stainless pieces in most universal replacement poppets should last a long, long time. How about the o-rings? Not so much… lost, broken, cracked, off smell. I use universal style poppets exclusively when rebuilding kegs. Finding the right OEM specific replacement poppets can be a chore. Beyond finding the right part number, these can be prohibitively expensive. Paying $10 to $14, or more, for an OEM poppet isn’t fun. In fact, if you really had to pay that, it may not even make sense to keep the keg.
I’ve long advocated to tossing OEM o-rings immediately. You don’t know what they’re made of, and you can’t get replacements. Replacing them immediately with a known quality o-ring and known part number before trimming to fit means you’ll be using the right materials and have a source for replacements.
Well… finally there’s an option that comes with quality o-rings made from the right materials out of the box! Beyond that, Valuebrew has pledged to always carry replacement o-rings, so you’ll always have a source when the time comes for replacements. Available in 5 and 10 packs with the option to add on a pack of replacement o-rings.

MoreBeer has a bunch of ball lock keg options both new an used. Most of those are self explanatory, but the used offerings can be a bit confusing.
A look at the keg. It looks quite good. Dirty, stickers still on it, but overall it’s in really good condition.

The keg offering featured in this review is the same keg featured in our step by step keg rebuilding and reconditioning how-to.
Used kegs are generally sourced from soda bottlers. They are built with commercial use in mind and designed to last for many years of rough duty service.
Brand new ball locks may not be made to the same standards. However… We also don’t generally put our kegs through the same abuse that a soda distributor would.
Not withstanding price. I think both options are valid. If you’re up for a little elbow grease and replacing a few parts, used may be the way to go, if you’re more interested in convenience brand new is a good choice. Practically, at least as of this posting, I think price will cause many to go the used route.
