5 Gallon Cornelius Keg, Ball Lock (Used)

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Used & Tested, Ball Lock Keg, With Pressure Relief Valve
Used & Pressure Tested – Ball Lock – Includes Pressure Relief Valve Lid

Cleaned and pressure tested 5 gallon, stainless steel, cornelius style tank. These tanks are guaranteed to hold pressure. 25″ tall and 8.5″ diameter. Tanks will show normal wear and tear.

Kegs include the o-rings and poppits that were installed when we received the tanks. We will often change an o-ring or poppit to get the tank to hold pressure. Grab new o-rings and poppits here if you’d like.

If you are just getting into kegging you will need a kegging setup to go with these kegs. We sell keg systems and have a whole lot more kegging options.

We know some homebrewers are more picky than others, so please keep in mind that these are USED kegs. Some of these kegs are probably 30 years old. Do not expect new kegs. If you are looking for new kegs, please check out our new kegs. With this said, they are going to show normal wear and tear. We are not implying that our kegs are not quality…we just want to avoid any misunderstandings.

If you are unhappy with your used 5 Gallon Cornelius Kegs for any reason, we will gladly take them back. The purchaser will be responsible for return shipping charges.

As of this update Northern Brewer and their vanity brand AIH have used ball locks for a whopping $84.99.

Shipping is an extra cost. For me it’s $18.94 (this is going to vary based on where you live). That figures to $103.93.

OR, RECONDITIONED Ball Locks at Beverage Elements for about…. $55.17 (or less) per keg shipped!

Reconditioned 5 Gallon Ball Lock Keg with Dual Handles

5 Gallon Reconditioned Ball Lock Keg – Dual Handle

Our 5 gallon reconditioned ball lock keg, both new and fully reconditioned, are far and away our most popular kegs — and for good reason. Reconditioned kegs are a great way to get the capacity and quality of a true brewer’s keg when you’re just getting started with in-home brewing: you can craft your very own beer, soda, Kombucha tea, cold brew coffee, nitro coffee and more, all at a great, affordable price.

But used kegs are leaky, sticky, and completely beat, right? Not at Beverage Elements. All our used kegs have been reconditioned right here, in house: we clean, sanitize, de-label, and pressure-check each and every one. Even though your reconditioned keg might not be brand new, you’ll never know it. Check out a few of the features and benefits you’ll be getting with this reconditioned ball lock keg.

(Class 1) Keg Features

  • Cleaned, sanitized, de-labeled and pressure-checked
  • Manual pressure relief built into the lid for easy depressurization
  • Durable stainless steel body and dual rubber handles
  • O-rings replaced during pressure check if necessary. Pro Tip: keep a spare set on hand at all times, since O-rings sometimes crack in transit and during keg cleaning
  • True ball lock keg — not converted pin lock
  • Great for homebrew beer, soda, Kombucha tea, nitro coffee, and cold brew coffee

Keg Specifications

  • Keg body of 304 stainless steel
  • Approved by the NSF
  • 8.5″ diameter x 25″ height — dimensions may vary slightly from wear

This is a Class 1 reconditioned ball lock keg. That’s the best condition of our reconditioned kegs — however, it is still used. It may have some scratches, dents, and other signs of use

As of this posting Beverage Elements has these for just $39.95. That’s an outstanding deal! For some pricing clarity, we featured these kegs back in March of 2017. At that time they were MORE. $49.90 each and you had to buy a two pack to get that price.

Shipping for me (again this is going to vary is) $15.22 that’s just $55.17 shipped!

It’s worth noting that shipping (again for me) is the same for either 1 or 2 kegs! That means the shipped per keg price is just $47.56 when you buy two.

Hands on Review: AEB Italian Made Ball Lock Kegs! New Updates… Now Available at Beverage Elements!

Updated: October 30, 2024

AEB has been manufacturing stainless steel drums, tanks and… kegs in their facility in Andalo Valtellino, Italy for over 30 years.

AEB leans hard into their Italian roots… “THE MADE IN ITALY IS OUR IDENTITY” can be seen plastered on their website in all caps. If I were to take a read on homebrewing, my read is that the general sentiment is that AEB kegs are among the highest quality kegs available to homebrewers. Just a guess and certainly a generalization.

Hands on Review AEB Ball Lock Kegs

A look at the boxA.E.B. Made in Italy. AEB leans heavily on their Italian identity. That makes sense to me as I generally think Italian made = high quality. That’s a broad stroke, but my espresso machine was made in Italy and it’s amazing. So, fair or unfair, that’s where I’m at.Close up of the keg imprint. NSF P/N 29744PS, Max Capacity 5 GAL, Year 2020, A.E.B. Made in Italy, N 004420, Warning, Never Exceed Maximum Working Pressure of 130 PSI.

Tip: If you’re looking for replacement parts look for your keg’s imprint. It should show the manufacturer and model number.

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

The hybrid keg is a sanke style keg with a sanke spear and coupler, but it features a removable lid. It’s the best of both worlds – a sanke keg with removeable lid!

Smaller scale operations can have a difficult time making the transition from corny kegs or disposable kegs to sanke kegs. That’s why the Hybrid Keg blends the best of both worlds. The Hybrid Keg features a removeable lids like a corny keg, but also has a sanke D spear allowing you to make the jump from ball/pin lock disconnects to standard keg couplers that are used at most bars and restaurants.

The Hybrid Keg removes the need to invest in expensive cleaning and filling equipment because its removeable lid make opening and cleaning the keg a breeze. The sanke valve and spear give you the flexibility and ability to put this on draft at any bar, restaurant or taproom using convential draft beer dispensing equipment.

The Best Ball Lock Keg Deal Going On Right Now…

Stacking Deals on Ball Locks at Keg Connection!

Cornelius Keg “or Firestone”, 5 Gallon, Ball Lock – Pepsi Style for Homebrew/Soda, Used | CLEANED

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

This is a re-conditioned 5 gallon ball lock, soda keg.  They are sometimes called “corny kegs” because of the manufacturer, Cornelius, but they can be made by several manufactures including Firestone, AEB, and others.  These kegs have been cleaned and pressure tested using the following process:

  • Rinsed out with water on the inside and sprayed on the outside.
  • Soaked in a hot “Brew Clean” solution for about an hour with poppet valves depressed to fill dip tubes with cleaning solution. Then re-rinsed.
  • The keg is then pressurized and soap tested for leaks, then left for several days and re-tested for pressure before shipping.
  • If you keg has a “sweet” smell when you open it this is normal.  This smell comes from the residual “Brew Clean” cleaner, NOT from soda. Just rinse the keg and sanitize again before kegging.

These kegs ship under our flat rate shipping (some of our competitors exclude kegs from free or reduced flat rate shipping programs).

These kegs come with their original O-rings AND a new set of O-rings at no additional charge (some competitors charge up to $3.99 for this new set of O-rings)  This O-ring set includes Lid O-ring, two post O-rings and two dip-tube O-rings.

Please remember that these are used kegs.  They will have dings, dents, stickers on the outside and could have some permanent staining that will not effect your beer.  The tops and bottoms may have black material coming off that will leave black marks on your hands or other areas. This is due to sun exposure and is very common in used kegs. If you want a perfect keg we sell new kegs as well.

Again – these are used kegs and are returnable but you will pay the shipping to return them.

  • For a limited time, Keg Connection has these kegs marked down a whopping $20 to $59.95.
  • Save ANOTHER 5%… HBF Readers Save More!  Coupon code HBF5OFF saves you another 5%.That makes these kegs $56.95.
  • Flat Rate Shipping: Keg Connection’s Flat Rate Shipping PromotionYour entire order ships for one flat rate, no matter how much you order, to addresses in the contiguous US.

Hands On Review: Old Ale Brand Brand Ball Lock Kegs available at Northern Brewer (and vanity storefronts)

Hands on Review AIH’s Brand New Ball Lock Kegs

Adventures in Homebrewing was a homebrew store located in Taylor, Michigan in the Detroit area. They offered a wide variety of homebrew supplies and gear including some really unique things at reasonable prices. They also had great customer service. Toward the end up 2021 AIH was bought out by Northern Brewer. Since Adventures in Homebrewing and Austin Homebrew Supply have joined Midwest Supplies in being vanity storefronts of Northern Brewer.

Adventures in Homebrewing produced a line of brand new ball lock kegs.  These were AIH’s own design. They are also branded “Old Ale Supply Company”.

It seems that Northern Brewer kept very few of Adventures in Homebrewing’s unique offerings, this keg is one that they kept.

How Often Should You Replace Keg O-Rings?… Daylight Savings Ends Soon + Save on Bulk Replacements!

How Often Should You Replace Keg O-Rings?

I think you should replace all keg o-rings when you refurbish or obtain a used keg. Generally speaking they are going to be worn out and even if they aren’t they’ll smell of soda pre-mix.  Beyond that, who knows what they’re made from.  Start with a clean slate.

What about after that? Of course, you could just keep using them until they break, they smell or look horrible or… until you lose a tank of CO2 due to an o-ring related leak. On the other end of the spectrum some people change o-rings every time they keg.

Universal Poppets via Valuebrew

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

A Valuebrew Exclusive! Stainless Steel Universal Replacement Poppets with our Food Safe Silicone O-Rings.

These work with all standard Ball Lock and Pin Lock homebrew kegs.

Ever wonder what other universal poppet o-rings are made of? Us too, after all this is one of the most high contact o-rings in you draft beer setup. We took matters into our own hands and worked with our suppliers to source a 304 Stainless Steel + Food Grade Silicone option. Stainless steel construction on all the metal parts and premium quality food grade silicone for the o-ring.

Our pledge to you… Let’s face it, the stainless pieces in most universal replacement poppets should last a long, long time. How about the o-rings? Not so much… lost, broken, cracked, off smell. This is where our pledge comes in… we’ll always carry replacement o-rings for these universal poppets. No need to guess what size replacements to buy or completely replace your universal poppets because you don’t have a reliable source for replacements.

I use universal style poppets exclusively when rebuilding kegs. Finding the right OEM specific replacement poppets can be a chore. Beyond finding the right part number, these can be prohibitively expensive. Paying $10 to $14, or more, for an OEM poppet isn’t fun. In fact, if you really had to pay that, it may not even make sense to keep the keg.

I’ve long advocated to tossing OEM o-rings immediately. You don’t know what they’re made of, and you can’t get replacements. Replacing them immediately with a known quality o-ring and known part number before trimming to fit means you’ll be using the right materials and have a source for replacements.

Well… finally there’s an option that comes with quality o-rings made from the right materials out of the box!  Beyond that, Valuebrew has pledged to always carry replacement o-rings, so you’ll always have a source when the time comes for replacements.  Available in 5 and 10 packs with the option to add on a pack of replacement o-rings.

Back in stock!  These have been out of stock for months. We’ll the full story is they came back in stock a few weeks ago, but sold out so quickly that I wasn’t able to get a post up. So, as of this update… they’re back in stock after months of being sold out!  Get them while you can.

What Does Reconditioned/Rebuilt Mean?

The short answer is probably… nothing.  I think reconditioned/rebuilt/refurbished are basically synonyms and there is no standard definition for any of these terms.

Here are the different definitions I’ve seen from different retailers via their offerings:

The short answer is probably… nothing.  I think reconditioned/rebuilt/refurbished are basically synonyms and there is no standard definition for any of these terms.

Here are the different definitions I’ve seen from different retailers via their offerings:

  • The keg is untouched, but is in okay shape and holds pressure.  In this case, reconditioned means… the keg works.
  • The keg has had been tested and had faulty parts replaced.  In this case, reconditioned means, we did the minimum to get the keg working.
  • All o-rings have been replaced and any faulty parts have been replaced.  In this case, reconditioned means… reconditioned.
  • All o-rings have been replaced and any faulty parts have been replaced and the keg has been cleaned.  In this case reconditioned means reconditioned and cleaned.

Examples of Keg Conditions from MoreBeer

The takeaway is that it’s important to read descriptions when it comes to reconditioned/rebuilt/refurbished kegs.  The post walks through a complete rebuild process.

Pin Lock Keg Pricing and Availability – MoreBeer is sold out again + An outstanding deal!

Pin Lock Keg Pricing…

There’s been a real reversal in used keg pricing. When I started brewing pin locks were cheaper than ball locks, but that has changed.

It’s been hard to find good used pin locks at times with some suppliers selling out even when selling at high prices. For example, see MoreBeer’s Pin Lock offering has been selling for a whopping $85 for many months. At times they have sold out for long periods of time even at that high price.

This is all related to availability. New pin lock kegs are not coming into the homebrewing market in mass and we’ve hit an availability wall.

Considering the current climate, I think now is the time to stock up. Things have been getting consistently worse and worse on the pin lock front. The same has been generally true for ball lock kegs, but the process has been slower than pin locks.

Update:

MoreBeer’s $85 offering has sold out again. This is a testament to the scarcity of pin lock kegs.

It also proves that this is an amazing deal…

The containers we call Ball Lock and Pin Lock Kegs come from the soda industry.  Also called Cornelius Kegs, Corny Kegs and Corney Kegs, they were originally intended to store and distribute soda pre-mix.  The big soda companies decided on different style containers for their pre-mix.  Pepsi landed on the Ball Lock style while Coke uses the Pin Lock style.

Homebrewers have since re-purposed these as homebrew beer kegs.

Pin Lock “Coke Style” Cornelius Keg – or Firestone, 5 Gallon, for Homebrew/Soda, Used | CLEANED

Good used pin locks have been hard to find…  When I started brewing pin locks were cheaper than ball locks, but that has changed. There’s been a real reversal in used keg pricing. Used pin locks have been tough to find in stock, especially at anything close to what I would call a good price. For example, see MoreBeer’s Pin Lock Offering. This is supply related. New pin lock kegs are not coming into the homebrewing market and we’ve finally hit an availability wall.

This has been especially true of pin lock kegs, because new pin locks have not been coming on the market. To my knowledge no new pin lock offering was generally available to homebrewers. This has caused the price and availability of pin locks to be a serious issue. For example, MoreBeer’s Pin Lock offering has sky-rocketed to $85 per keg.
