I use a similar pump (different manufacturer, features and specifications) for a recirculating draft line cleaning setup.  Note that fittings sizes are different on this pump vs the one I use in that build.  Adjust accordingly  Another possible homebrewing application would be to set this up for use a part of a recirculating wort chiller setup.

Hands on Review: KegLand Ball Lock Disconnect With Shank

Kegland is making some great stuff. Really well thought out, innovative and generally well-priced gear. When I see something new from Kegland I’m generally left with one of two responses, 1. I’ve been wanting something like this for a long time or, 2. I would have never thought of this tweak/product, it’s ingenious.

Kegland’s Ball Lock QD with integrated shank is par for the course. A really good idea. I’ll take a closer look at it in this review and also discuss the general idea behind this and similar solutions.

But first, what does a shank adapter do?

Corny Keg Faucet Adapters have been around for a long time. They allow a keg QD to connect to a compatible faucet. An MFL/male flare QD, ball lock or pin lock, connects to the FFL/female flare side of the converter. Basically you’re adding mini shank to your QD. Dandy!

Old style faucet converter and QDThis allows you connect a compatible faucet to a keg QD. No tubing necessary. Really nice for mobile serving and more.

Our reconditioned pin lock homebrew keg is the perfect affordable solution for home brewing and beverage making.  Pin locks are the alternative to the more-common ball lock kegs, and they have some unique features and benefits of their own.

First, the “pin” part refers to the method of attaching the disconnects to the keg posts. Pin lock kegs have (not surprisingly) pins on each post – two on the liquid, one on the gas. These pins hold the disconnects very securely, and because there’s two pins on the liquid side and three on the gas, you’ll never confuse one line for the other. Kinda cool.

Second, pin lock kegs are typically shorter than similarly sized ball locks, making them ideal when space is a little tight.

Finally, they’re cheap! These kegs give great bang for the buck without giving up anything in performance.

So go ahead and do something a little different. Grab a classic 5 gallon pin lock keg or three and stand out in the homebrew crowd. (Oh, and they’re also pretty great for cold brew coffee, nitro coffee, soda, Kombucha tea, and whatever else you’re drinkin’)

Hands on Review: BouncerMD Inline Beer Filter

BouncerMD “Mac Daddy” Inline Filter

As popular as unfiltered beer is right now, there are still a lot of times in the brewing process when you want to filter your in-process beer to some degree. For me, it’s hop trub when transferring from the kettle to the fermentor. Dry hopping can also get you unwanted debris when transferring into your keg. You’ve got process options like whirlpooling or gear additions like bazooka screens for inside your kettle. The Bouncer filter is another option you can add to your toolbox.

The Bouncer filter is like a miniature version of a home water filter. There’s a plastic housing that has inlet and outlet ports, and a clear plastic body that holds the stainless mesh filter screen and screws onto the main housing. The filter screen is made of stainless steel and nylon, and comes in two different mesh sizes. The coarse filter is 20 squares per inch (915 microns), and the fine filter is 50 squares per inch (305 microns).

The Bouncer itself also comes in two sizes- Normal and Mac Daddy. The Normal size comes with barbed fittings to hook up your 3/8” ID transfer hose. The Mac Daddy comes with two sets of fittings- one for 3/8” ID hose and the other 1/2″ ID hose so you can select whatever size matches your siphon or brew kettle valve. The larger Mac Daddy filter also gives you 224% more filter surface area than the base model.

The filter unit is rated for temperatures up to 150F. That means it’s good post-chilling, but not suitable for the hot inlet side into a plate chiller for example. Another creative use of the filter is as a Randall to infuse hops or other ingredient flavors into your beer when serving. More on that in my hands on trial below.

How Often Should You Clean Lines?

The Draught Quality Beer Manual says… every two weeks.

That recommendation is for a commercial operation.  What about homebrewers?  We serve far fewer beer on our kegerators, but on the other hand, we can have been on tap and in lines 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.  Considering all of this, my recommendation is every 1 to 2 months.

Note from HBF: One difference between Pin Lock and Ball Lock kegs is the type of lids that come with each.  Ball Locks, generally, have a manual PRV valve, while Pin Locks do not.  Ball Lock style lids are, in my opinion, superior because the manual PRV allows you to easily vent your keg as needed.  The good news is that, for standard kegs, the lids are the same size and can be interchanged.  That means you can use a Ball Lock style lid in a Pin Lock Keg.

As of this update these are selling for just $13.95. Shipping is an additional fee. For me… I’m seeing $6.04 shipping, but that may vary based on location. The key thing is that each additional lid ships for less. As an example, if I order 5 lids shipping is $6.19. Use to connect multiple Ball Lock keg lines without disassembling. This allows you to clean more quickly and easily and allows you to clean QDs along with draft lines.

Works with BOTH liquid and gas posts. This allows you to jump from liquid to gas to do things like purging a keg from top to bottom using the liquid out post.

Note that o-ring color may vary, but you’ll always receive our food grade, silicone ball lock o-rings. Most likely, you’ll receive the pictured custom blue o-rings but we may substitute if we run out of stock. For gas QD connections, we recommend only short term connections as we cannot guarantee a leak free connection. Pictured QDs are not included.

 

Stainless steel ball lock jumper from Valuebrew. This works with both gas and liquid QDs. That means you can jump from keg line to keg line for cleaning and also hook up to the liquid side of your keg to purge with CO2 from the top to the bottom.

These also feature Valuebrew’s Food Grade Silicone Post O-Rings. Blue are pictured, but color can vary.

Why a two pressure regulator?  A two pressure regulator gives you the ability to keep kegs at different pressures.  This is a requirement to maintain two distinct carbonation levels.  It’s also handy if you want to force carbonate a keg more quickly, at a higher pressure, while maintaining your standard serving pressure on a keg that’s already being served or if you want to have a utility line for purging kegs and such.

Torpedo Stainless Steel Ball Lock Disconnect with… 1/4 in. MPT Threads! – For Spunding Builds

Torpedo Ball Lock Disconnect Gas In (Stainless) - 1/4 in. MPTMoreBeer’s Torpedo Ball Lock Beverage Disconnects are available in both beverage and gas configurations and are… stainless steel! They will, of course, work with MoreBeer’s Torpedo kegs, but they will also work with any ball lock Corny Keg.

1/4″ MPT Threaded QD!

The lineup contains an innovative and unique offering. a 1/4″ MPT threaded variation.  Why, oh, why would you want this?  Well one great reason is a Spunding Valve Build.

To build what we call a Style 1 Build you need to connect the tee to an MFL QD, a swivel JIC to NPT fitting is required. Those are tough to find in stainless steel and usually… very expensive.

This Ball Lock Keg QD is stainless steel and eliminates the need for the JIC to NPT fitting. That’s a big cost savings. Beyond that, it’s a simplification of the build. One less item to buy, adjust and maintain.

Note that I’m seeing one review that says this doesn’t seal well. The thing I would say is that this is NPT thread that’s going to need teflon tape.
