When we carbonate a keg, pressure is being applied to the keg from the top, via the head space. Beer at the top carbonates first. That carbonation works it’s way down the keg. I’m sure there’s also some movement in the keg that helps to mix things up and distribute carbonation. But just sitting there, I think that mixing is a slow process. However it all works, practically speaking, the beer at the top carbonates more quickly compared to the beer at the bottom. This allows you to serve from the top accessing the more carbonated portion of the keg. It’s also a benefit for clarity because trub settles out heading downward. You can see this stratification in a glass carboy. As the beer starts to clear, the top clears first. I don’t think if this is exactly accurate, but I picture carbonation happening with the same sort of stratification until the beer reaches equilibrium and is equally carbonated throughout.
Gekufa Cornelius Keg Lid, Corny Keg Lid Replacement with 304 Stainless Steel Pressure Relief Valve & O-ring for Homebrew Beer Kegging, Soda Keg Lid

Good Sealing:With New O-ring & 304 SS Pressure Relief Valve, can hold pressure without leaks.
Easy to Install: Large handle makes installation easier; labor-saving design of safety relief valve, no need to keep lifting when deflated, just lift once and rotate 90° to continuously deflate.
Note from HBF: One difference between Pin Lock and Ball Lock kegs is the type of lids that come with each. Ball Locks, generally, have a manual PRV valve, while Pin Locks do not. Ball Lock style lids are, in my opinion, superior because the manual PRV allows you to easily vent your keg as needed. The good news is that, for standard kegs, the lids are the same size and can be interchanged. That means you can use a Ball Lock style lid in a Pin Lock Keg.

Pin Lock Cornelius Keg – Without Gaskets Replaced (Pin Lock) from MoreBeer
More Info
From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:
These are reconditioned 5-gallon capacity, pin lock kegs with rubber tops and bottoms (color may vary). Lids have fixed pressure relief valves (not pull style).
The interior and exterior are washed and rinsed and all gaskets are replaced to ensure that no soda flavor or residue is left behind. We do not replace poppets, however these can be purchased separately via part numbers KEG544.
Kegs are pressure tested and are guaranteed to be holding pressure upon delivery. Please notify us within 48 hours of receipt if they are not holding pressure.
All kegs are used and have cosmetic blemishes, i.e. minor scratches, dings and stickers. These blemishes will not affect the functionality of the keg.
Body connects should be removed for cleaning and sanitizing before every use. Kegs may come with either 11/16 inch body connects or 7/8 inch body connects. We sell deep sockets for the removal of either one (Part number KEG775).
Kegs are approximately 9″ Diam. x 22.25″ Height. 25.25″ Height with fittings. Measurements may vary slightly.
MoreBeer had been selling these for $84.99 for quite some time. They have completely sold out multiple times at that price.
Our reconditioned pin lock homebrew keg is the perfect affordable solution for home brewing and beverage making. Pin locks are the alternative to the more-common ball lock kegs, and they have some unique features and benefits of their own.
First, the “pin” part refers to the method of attaching the disconnects to the keg posts. Pin lock kegs have (not surprisingly) pins on each post – two on the liquid, one on the gas. These pins hold the disconnects very securely, and because there’s two pins on the liquid side and three on the gas, you’ll never confuse one line for the other. Kinda cool.
Second, pin lock kegs are typically shorter than similarly sized ball locks, making them ideal when space is a little tight.
Finally, they’re cheap! These kegs give great bang for the buck without giving up anything in performance.
So go ahead and do something a little different. Grab a classic 5 gallon pin lock keg or three and stand out in the homebrew crowd. (Oh, and they’re also pretty great for cold brew coffee, nitro coffee, soda, Kombucha tea, and whatever else you’re drinkin’)
Reconditioned 5 Gallon Pin Lock Keg Features
Durable stainless steel construction
Dual rubber handles—colors will vary
Reconditioned – cleaned, sanitized, de-labled and pressure-checked prior to shipment
We replace the keg O-rings as necessary during testing. We still recommend that you keep a spare set on hand at all times, as O-rings sometimes crack in transit and when you clean the keg.
Great for homebrew beer, soda, and Kombucha tea, as well as nitro coffee and cold brew coffee
Keg Specifications
Keg body of 304 stainless steel
Approved by the NSF
9″ diameter x 22″ height. Keg dimensions may vary slightly from wear.
This is a Class 1 keg. That’s the best condition used keg we offer, but please remember the keg is still used and will have some scratches, dents and signs of wear
Good used pin locks have been hard to find… When I started brewing pin locks were cheaper than ball locks, but that has changed. There’s been a real reversal in used keg pricing. Used pin locks have been tough to find in stock, especially at anything close to what I would call a good price. For example, see MoreBeer’s Pin Lock Offering. This is supply related. New pin lock kegs are not coming into the homebrewing market and we’ve finally hit an availability wall.

A Valuebrew Exclusive! Stainless Steel Universal Replacement Poppets with our Food Safe Silicone O-Rings.
These work with all standard Ball Lock and Pin Lock homebrew kegs.
Ever wonder what other universal poppet o-rings are made of? Us too, after all this is one of the most high contact o-rings in you draft beer setup. We took matters into our own hands and worked with our suppliers to source a 304 Stainless Steel + Food Grade Silicone option. Stainless steel construction on all the metal parts and premium quality food grade silicone for the o-ring.
Our pledge to you… Let’s face it, the stainless pieces in most universal replacement poppets should last a long, long time. How about the o-rings? Not so much… lost, broken, cracked, off smell. This is where our pledge comes in… we’ll always carry replacement o-rings for these universal poppets. No need to guess what size replacements to buy or completely replace your universal poppets because you don’t have a reliable source for replacements.
I use universal style poppets exclusively when rebuilding kegs. Finding the right OEM specific replacement poppets can be a chore. Beyond finding the right part number, these can be prohibitively expensive. Paying $10 to $14, or more, for an OEM poppet isn’t fun. In fact, if you really had to pay that, it may not even make sense to keep the keg.
I’ve long advocated to tossing OEM o-rings immediately. You don’t know what they’re made of, and you can’t get replacements. Replacing them immediately with a known quality o-ring and known part number before trimming to fit means you’ll be using the right materials and have a source for replacements. See: Universal Poppet Tips & Tricks
Well… finally there’s an option that comes with quality o-rings made from the right materials out of the box! Beyond that, Valuebrew has pledged to always carry replacement o-rings, so you’ll always have a source when the time comes for replacements. Available in 5 and 10 packs with the option to add on a pack of replacement o-rings.
For a short time, Valuebrew is discounting most of their gear including bulk food grade o-rings (i

Many have stickers on the outside. They might be of either Cornelius, Firestone (also called Spartenburg) or Italian construction. We fully guarantee your satisfaction with the kegs you purchase. ***FREE O-RING PROMOTION: 1 LID, 2 POST AND 2 DIPTUBE O-RINGS FREE WITH YOUR ORDER!***
Many people prefer pin lock kegs when using in shorter Fridge or areas where height is important. They 22″ tall and 9″ Wide.
Please remember that these are used kegs. They will have dings, dents, stickers on the outside and could have some permanent staining that will not effect your beer. The tops and bottoms may have black material coming off that will leave black marks on your hands or other areas. This is due to sun exposure and is very common in used kegs. If you want a perfect keg we sell new kegs as well.

About, from William’s: “Unlike standard lid O rings which have a .280″ cross section, our exclusive Oversize O Ring has a slightly larger (.310”) diameter, and is molded from softer rubber, for a more positive seal at low dispensing pressures. An ideal fix for an older keg with a leaky lid, or for any keg that needs to be pressurized before filling to achieve an airtight seal. Fits all brands of kegs, pin-lock or ball-lock, with a 3 by 3.5” clamp down oval lid. “
Pin Lock users are regularly left out when it comes to parts and accessories. Point in case… I am aware of very few offerings for pin lock post o-rings (0 offerings in bulk). Most shops sell the same o-ring for both ball and pin lock posts. Pin lock post o-rings are larger than ball lock post o-rings.
From Valuebrew:
“Pin Lockers Rejoice! We’re excited to announce we have sourced Pin Lock Post O-Rings made from FDA Silicone! You can finally buy Pin Lock specific o-rings in food safe materials… in bulk quantities.”
All count options are on sale. Prices range from $4.99 to $11.99 depending on quantity

Clear Beer from the First Pour to the Last Half Glass: this beer floating ball dip tube kit comes with a floating ball and silicone hose, the silicone hose will always get the clearest beer out from beverage water surface inside beer keg thanks to the buoyancy created by the stainless floating ball, do not need to worry about picking up yeast, trub like the traditional long stainless liquid dip tube does, floating dip tubes are a must-have for fermenting and serving from a corny keg.
Keep the End of Tube Submerged: the metal tip of beverage intake is weighted enough to keep floating ball beer tubing submerged in beer, will not rise above the beer surface and will not let you get a blast of foam and gas. do not need to wear glove and open the keg to reposition and get the beer dip tube submerged again, which will prevent beer from exposing to air. suggest cut the silicone hose length to 2-3 cm far from keg bottom to keep tubing submerged and leave trub inside keg effectively.
Pre-assembled Floating Ball Improves Extracting Efficiency: perfect for using in corny keg, cornelius keg and fermenter, you need to cut the length of silicone hose to fit beer kegs with different depths, suggest cut your own beer keg long stainless liquid dip tube with tools to get a good effect if necessary. the metal ring is pre-assembled to the floating ball and the stainless tube, which ensures metal ring goes through 2 holes of stainless tube letting beer out without taking any sediment.
Flexible Silicone Tubing Does Not Need Hot Water: the silicone dip tube hose features I.D 6 mm, it has great stretchability and ductility, flexible and stretchy enough at all temps, matches to the 5/16'' stainless tube of the floating ball perfectly without using hot water to make it fit, it also will stretch over other 3/16'' barb fittings or 5/16'' keg tube connectors excellently, a must have for fermenting in cornelius kegs!
Healthy Stainless and 31'' Silicone Dip Tube: the floating beer ball is made of stainless steel 304, not easy to get rust, healthy silicone dip tube is no odors, will not bring bad smell to beverage. 31'' silicone dip tube is long enough to work in 55L FermZilla perfectly, a few inches of silicone hose has to be trimmed to fit for other model corny, cornelius keg, allows you to serve clear home brew beer, cold brew coffee, soda water, iced tea at different activities.
