Pin Lock Keg Pricing and Availability + An Outstanding Deal

Pin Lock Keg Pricing…

There’s been a real reversal in used keg pricing. When I started brewing pin locks were cheaper than ball locks, but that has changed.

It’s been hard to find good used pin locks at times with some suppliers selling out even when selling at high prices. For example, see MoreBeer’s Pin Lock offering has been selling for a whopping $85 for many months. At times they have sold out for long periods of time even at that high price.

This is all related to availability. New pin lock kegs are not coming into the homebrewing market in mass and we’ve hit an availability wall.

Considering the current climate, I think now is the time to stock up. Things have been getting consistently worse and worse on the pin lock front. The same has been generally true for ball lock kegs, but the process has been slower than pin locks.

Update: MoreBeer’s $85 offering has sold out… again

MoreBeer’s $85 offering has sold out again. This offering has experience MULTIPLE sellouts at this price point.

This is a testament to the scarcity and cost of pin lock kegs.

Pin Lock Keg Pricing Commentary…

There’s been a real reversal in used keg pricing. For example, see MoreBeer’s Pin Lock Offering.  I’m guessing this is related to availability. How to get a keg ready for first use? New Keg Cleaning and Prep

I’ve had the go-to post on rebuilding and reconditioning kegs for a long time now. My procedure is thorough and produces better looking and better functioning kegs.

New kegs require some special treatment too. Dirt, oils and chemicals from the manufacturing process need to be thoroughly cleaned before use. Here’s a walkthrough to help you ready your brand new keg.

Preparing New Homebrew Kegs for First Use

Hey… here’s a new keg!  In this case it’s a 2.5 gallon single handle AMCYL ball lock kegMore AMCYL kegsHands on Review

Strong PBW Soak

PBW is my go-to for homebrew cleansing. I’ll admit here… typically I underdose PBW. I eyeball it and most of the time, I use less than the directions call for. That changes when it comes to a brand new keg. For new keg prep I like to prepare a very strong solution. Somewhere around double strength.

Brand New Replacement Keg Lids… $12.95!

Keg Lid with Built-In Pressure Relief – Pin Lock or Ball Lock

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Yep, a new keg lid with built-in pressure relief for Cornelius-style pin lock OR ball lock kegs!

Imagine that. Pin lock users get manual pressure relief without buying a whole new keg. Ball lock folks get a great replacement lid.

So go ahead … add a little pressure relief to your ball lock or pin lock keg with our new Corny lid. If you’re still working without a pull pressure relief – maybe pushing something into the liquid connection to relieve the pressure – it’s really time to upgrade.

One high-quality stainless steel keg lid for Cornelius-style kegs with built-in manual pull pressure relief and new O-ring.

In most cases, Pin lock and ball lock cornelius style keg lids are interchangeable from a size perspective.  That means you can, generally speaking, put a pepsi/ball lock style (manual prv) lid on a coke/pin lock style (no manual prv) keg.  In my book, that’s a solid upgrade.  See: What’s the Difference Between Ball Lock Kegs and Pin Lock Kegs?

As of this update Beverage Elements has these for just $12.95. That’s a bargain!

5 Gallon Reconditioned Pin Lock Kegs… $34.99! Matches Black Friday, A MUCH more expensive option just sold out

5 Gallon Pin Lock Keg – Dual Handle – Reconditioned

Reconditioned 5 Gallon Pin Lock Keg

Our reconditioned pin lock homebrew keg is the perfect affordable solution for home brewing and beverage making.  Pin locks are the alternative to the more-common ball lock kegs, and they have some unique features and benefits of their own.

First, the “pin” part refers to the method of attaching the disconnects to the keg posts. Pin lock kegs have (not surprisingly) pins on each post – two on the liquid, one on the gas. These pins hold the disconnects very securely, and because there’s two pins on the liquid side and three on the gas, you’ll never confuse one line for the other. Kinda cool.

Second, pin lock kegs are typically shorter than similarly sized ball locks, making them ideal when space is a little tight.

Finally, they’re cheap! These kegs give great bang for the buck without giving up anything in performance.

So go ahead and do something a little different. Grab a classic 5 gallon pin lock keg or three and stand out in the homebrew crowd. (Oh, and they’re also pretty great for cold brew coffee, nitro coffee, soda, Kombucha tea, and whatever else you’re drinkin’)

Reconditioned 5 Gallon Pin Lock Keg Features

  • Durable stainless steel construction
  • Dual rubber handles—colors will vary
  • Reconditioned – cleaned, sanitized, de-labled and pressure-checked prior to shipment
  • We replace the keg O-rings as necessary during testing. We still recommend that you keep a spare set on hand at all times, as O-rings sometimes crack in transit and when you clean the keg.
  • Great for homebrew beer, soda, and Kombucha tea, as well as nitro coffee and cold brew coffee

Keg Specifications

  • Keg body of 304 stainless steel
  • Approved by the NSF
  • 9″ diameter x 22″ height. Keg dimensions may vary slightly from wear.

This is a Class 1 keg. That’s the best condition used keg we offer, but please remember the keg is still used and will have some scratches, dents and signs of wear

Universal Poppets Tips and Tricks + VB’s Universal Poppets are Back in Stock

I use universal style poppets exclusively when rebuilding kegs. Finding the right OEM specific replacement poppets can be a chore. Beyond finding the right part number, these can be prohibitively expensive. Paying $10 to $14, or more, for an OEM poppet isn’t fun. In fact, if you really had to pay that, it may not even make sense to keep the keg.

Enter universal poppets.  These can be picked up at a reasonable cost, regularly under $2 each, and fit the vast majority of kegs.

A Valuebrew Exclusive! Stainless Steel Universal Replacement Poppets with our Food Safe Silicone O-Rings.

These work with all standard Ball Lock and Pin Lock homebrew kegs.

Ever wonder what other universal poppet o-rings are made of? Us too, after all this is one of the most high contact o-rings in you draft beer setup. We took matters into our own hands and worked with our suppliers to source a 304 Stainless Steel + Food Grade Silicone option. Stainless steel construction on all the metal parts and premium quality food grade silicone for the o-ring.

Our pledge to you… Let’s face it, the stainless pieces in most universal replacement poppets should last a long, long time. How about the o-rings? Not so much… lost, broken, cracked, off smell. This is where our pledge comes in… we’ll always carry replacement o-rings for these universal poppets. No need to guess what size replacements to buy or completely replace your universal poppets because you don’t have a reliable source for replacements.

Beyond finding the right part number, these can be prohibitively expensive. Paying $10 to $14, or more, for an OEM poppet isn’t fun. In fact, if you really had to pay that, it may not even make sense to keep the keg.

I’ve long advocated to tossing OEM o-rings immediately. You don’t know what they’re made of, and you can’t get replacements. Replacing them immediately with a known quality o-ring and known part number before trimming to fit means you’ll be using the right materials and have a source for replacements.

Well… finally there’s an option that comes with quality o-rings made from the right materials out of the box!  Beyond that, Valuebrew has pledged to always carry replacement o-rings, so you’ll always have a source when the time comes for replacements.  Available in 5 and 10 packs with the option to add on a pack of replacement o-rings.

Back in stock!  These have been out of stock for months. We’ll the full story is they came back in stock a few weeks ago, but sold out so quickly that I wasn’t able to get a post up. So, as of this update… they’re back in stock after months of being sold out!  Get them while you can.

Universal Poppets

Tip: Immediately Replace Universal Poppet O-Rings

I remove and discard the o-rings that come with universal poppets.  That may sound a little odd, but there are a couple issues. First, I have no idea what these are made of. They are probably okay, but I’m not sure. This is one spot that has a lot of contact with beer. I want to make sure these are food grade.  Second, when it comes time to replace these o-rings I want replacements that won’t change fit.  I’m aware of a single source for bulk food grade o-ring replacements for universal poppets. Size may vary slightly compared to OEM, so I replace these before adjusting for fit so that the replacements won’t change the way these fit. The stainless parts of universal poppets should last a long, long time, having a reliable source for replacements that you know aren’t going to change anything is a big benefit. Beyond that, being sure you’re using food grade materials at this point is worth a few cents.

Note from HBF: One difference between Pin Lock and Ball Lock kegs is the type of lids that come with each.  Ball Locks, generally, have a manual PRV valve, while Pin Locks do not.  Ball Lock style lids are, in my opinion, superior because the manual PRV allows you to easily vent your keg as needed.  The good news is that, for standard kegs, the lids are the same size and can be interchanged.  That means you can use a Ball Lock style lid in a Pin Lock Keg.

However it all works, practically speaking, the beer at the top carbonates more quickly compared to the beer at the bottom. This allows you to serve from the top accessing the more carbonated portion of the keg. It’s also a benefit for clarity because trub settles out heading downward. You can see this stratification in a glass carboy. As the beer starts to clear, the top clears first. I don’t think if this is exactly accurate, but I picture carbonation happening with the same sort of stratification until the beer reaches equilibrium and is equally carbonated throughout.

Good used pin locks have been hard to find…  When I started brewing pin locks were cheaper than ball locks, but that has changed. There’s been a real reversal in used keg pricing. Used pin locks have been tough to find in stock, especially at anything close to what I would call a good price. For example, see MoreBeer’s Pin Lock Offering. This is supply related. New pin lock kegs are not coming into the homebrewing market and we’ve finally hit an availability wall.

As of this posting Beverage Elements has these for just $34.95. That’s an outstanding deal! This the kind of price we saw 5+ years ago. Get them while you can!

As of this posting these are on sale for $42.95. Check site for current price & availability.

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

I’ve long advocated to tossing OEM o-rings immediately. You don’t know what they’re made of, and you can’t get replacements. Replacing them immediately with a known quality o-ring and known part number before trimming to fit means you’ll be using the right materials and have a source for replacements.  See: Universal Poppet Tips & Tricks

Pin Lock Post O-Rings, Bulk Quantities on Sale

pin lock keg orings

pin lock oringsPIN LOCK Post O-Rings!

Pin Lock users are regularly left out when it comes to parts and accessories.  Point in case… I am aware of very few offerings for pin lock post o-rings (0 offerings in bulk).  Most shops sell the same o-ring for both ball and pin lock posts.  Pin lock post o-rings are larger than ball lock post o-rings.

From Valuebrew:
