Pin Lock Keg Pricing and Availability – MoreBeer is sold out again + An outstanding deal!

Pin Lock Keg Pricing…

There’s been a real reversal in used keg pricing. When I started brewing pin locks were cheaper than ball locks, but that has changed.

It’s been hard to find good used pin locks at times with some suppliers selling out even when selling at high prices. For example, see MoreBeer’s Pin Lock offering has been selling for a whopping $85 for many months. At times they have sold out for long periods of time even at that high price.

This is all related to availability. New pin lock kegs are not coming into the homebrewing market in mass and we’ve hit an availability wall.

Considering the current climate, I think now is the time to stock up. Things have been getting consistently worse and worse on the pin lock front. The same has been generally true for ball lock kegs, but the process has been slower than pin locks.

Update:

MoreBeer’s $85 offering has sold out again. This is a testament to the scarcity of pin lock kegs.

It also proves that this is an amazing deal…

Pin Lock users are regularly left out when it comes to parts and accessories.  Point in case… I am aware of very few offerings for pin lock post o-rings (0 offerings in bulk).  Most shops sell the same o-ring for both ball and pin lock posts.  Pin lock post o-rings are larger than ball lock post o-rings.

Note from HBF: One difference between Pin Lock and Ball Lock kegs is the type of lids that come with each.  Ball Locks, generally, have a manual PRV valve, while Pin Locks do not.  Ball Lock style lids are, in my opinion, superior because the manual PRV allows you to easily vent your keg as needed.  The good news is that, for standard kegs, the lids are the same size and can be interchanged.  That means you can use a Ball Lock style lid in a Pin Lock Keg.

Pin Lock Keg Pricing Commentary…

There’s been a real reversal in used keg pricing. For example, see MoreBeer’s Pin Lock Offering.  I’m guessing this is related to availability. Low Stock… 15 Pack Special… Universal Poppets – 304 Stainless + Food Grade Silicone & Reliable O-Ring Replacements

universal poppets

Universal Poppets via Valuebrew

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

A Valuebrew Exclusive! Stainless Steel Universal Replacement Poppets with our Food Safe Silicone O-Rings.

These work with all standard Ball Lock and Pin Lock homebrew kegs.

Ever wonder what other universal poppet o-rings are made of? Us too, after all this is one of the most high contact o-rings in you draft beer setup. We took matters into our own hands and worked with our suppliers to source a 304 Stainless Steel + Food Grade Silicone option. Stainless steel construction on all the metal parts and premium quality food grade silicone for the o-ring.

Our pledge to you… Let’s face it, the stainless pieces in most universal replacement poppets should last a long, long time. How about the o-rings? Not so much… lost, broken, cracked, off smell. This is where our pledge comes in… we’ll always carry replacement o-rings for these universal poppets. No need to guess what size replacements to buy or completely replace your universal poppets because you don’t have a reliable source for replacements.

I use universal style poppets exclusively when rebuilding kegs. Finding the right OEM specific replacement poppets can be a chore. Beyond finding the right part number, these can be prohibitively expensive. Paying $10 to $14, or more, for an OEM poppet isn’t fun. In fact, if you really had to pay that, it may not even make sense to keep the keg.

I’ve long advocated to tossing OEM o-rings immediately. You don’t know what they’re made of, and you can’t get replacements. Replacing them immediately with a known quality o-ring and known part number before trimming to fit means you’ll be using the right materials and have a source for replacements.  See: Universal Poppet Tips & Tricks

Well… finally there’s an option that comes with quality o-rings made from the right materials out of the box!  Beyond that, Valuebrew has pledged to always carry replacement o-rings, so you’ll always have a source when the time comes for replacements.  Available in 5 and 10 packs with the option to add on a pack of replacement o-rings.

15 Pack Special…

Valuebrew has always offered 5 and 10 count packs. They are running a limited time 15 pack deal.  These are on sale for $24.49. Coupon code 15pack takes another 10% off.

Update: Until recently Valuebrew had been out of stock of all universal poppet options for months. They recently received a shipment. As of this update, I’m seeing low stock on the 15 pack special. Under 10 as of this update.

Note: You must use this link. The 15 pack special doesn’t show on the standard product page or by searching…

Many have stickers on the outside. They might be of either Cornelius, Firestone (also called Spartenburg) or Italian construction. All Options are Back in Stock… Color Code Post O-Rings “Blue for Beer, Green for Gas” or Match QD Colors

Custom Color Keg Post O-Rings from Valuebrew:

A Valuebrew Exclusive! We commissioned the production of these custom color o-rings in the same food grade silicone we use for our other premium quality replacement o-rings. We picked the color and placed a massive order to be able to offer you these in bulk quantities at the same price as our other high quality post o-rings.

These can be used for either post. A suggestion we have is to color code your posts Blue for Beer and Green for Gas. This way you’ll immediately be able to tell which post is which. Plus your keg will look awesome!

These are sized to work with standard Ball Lock Cornelius style homebrew kegs. If you’re a Pin Lock keg user, they’ll also work. We recommend using your choice of colors (Blue or Green) on your Pin Lock keg liquid post and our Pin Lock Keg Post O-Rings on the gas post

  • These are available in bulk quantities.  Price varies based on quantity,
  • Compare: Keg Fitting O-Rings at William’s Brewing – multiple color options at 49 cents per o-ring.   No mention of material or food grade materials.

Valuebrew has generally struggled to keep things in stock. That’s especially been the case recently. They most have received a shipment because almost everything is back in stock.

Valuebrew has just introduced Gray and Black o-rings. As the picture indicates these are designed to match standard gray and black keg QDs.  These have become standard colors on ball lock, pin lock (usually the bottom portion of the QD) and even recently released Kegland QDs (center portion).

The gray and black are also made from food grade silicone and also available in bulk quantities.

Back in stock!  These have been out of stock for months. We’ll the full story is they came back in stock a few weeks ago, but sold out so quickly that I wasn’t able to get a post up. So, as of this update… they’re back in stock after months of being sold out!  Get them while you can.

Universal Poppets

Tip: Immediately Replace Universal Poppet O-Rings

I remove and discard the o-rings that come with universal poppets.  That may sound a little odd, but there are a couple issues. First, I have no idea what these are made of. They are probably okay, but I’m not sure. This is one spot that has a lot of contact with beer. I want to make sure these are food grade.  Second, when it comes time to replace these o-rings I want replacements that won’t change fit.  I’m aware of a single source for bulk food grade o-ring replacements for universal poppets. Size may vary slightly compared to OEM, so I replace these before adjusting for fit so that the replacements won’t change the way these fit. The stainless parts of universal poppets should last a long, long time, having a reliable source for replacements that you know aren’t going to change anything is a big benefit. Beyond that, being sure you’re using food grade materials at this point is worth a few cents.

My explanation of how this works…

When we carbonate a keg, pressure is being applied to the keg from the top, via the head space. Beer at the top carbonates first. That carbonation works it’s way down the keg. I’m sure there’s also some movement in the keg that helps to mix things up and distribute carbonation. But just sitting there, I think that mixing is a slow process. However it all works, practically speaking, the beer at the top carbonates more quickly compared to the beer at the bottom. This allows you to serve from the top accessing the more carbonated portion of the keg. It’s also a benefit for clarity because trub settles out heading downward. You can see this stratification in a glass carboy. As the beer starts to clear, the top clears first. I don’t think if this is exactly accurate, but I picture carbonation happening with the same sort of stratification until the beer reaches equilibrium and is equally carbonated throughout.

How to get a keg ready for first use? New Keg Cleaning and Prep

I’ve had the go-to post on rebuilding and reconditioning kegs for a long time now. My procedure is thorough and produces better looking and better functioning kegs.

New kegs require some special treatment too. Dirt, oils and chemicals from the manufacturing process need to be thoroughly cleaned before use. Here’s a walkthrough to help you ready your brand new keg.

Preparing New Homebrew Kegs for First Use

Hey… here’s a new keg!  In this case it’s a 2.5 gallon single handle AMCYL ball lock kegMore AMCYL kegsHands on Review

Strong PBW Soak

PBW is my go-to for homebrew cleansing. I’ll admit here… typically I underdose PBW. I eyeball it and most of the time, I use less than the directions call for. That changes when it comes to a brand new keg. For new keg prep I like to prepare a very strong solution. Somewhere around double strength.

  • Clear Beer from the First Pour to the Last Half Glass: this beer floating ball dip tube kit comes with a floating ball and silicone hose, the silicone hose will always get the clearest beer out from beverage water surface inside beer keg thanks to the buoyancy created by the stainless floating ball, do not need to worry about picking up yeast, trub like the traditional long stainless liquid dip tube does, floating dip tubes are a must-have for fermenting and serving from a corny keg.
  • Keep the End of Tube Submerged: the metal tip of beverage intake is weighted enough to keep floating ball beer tubing submerged in beer, will not rise above the beer surface and will not let you get a blast of foam and gas. do not need to wear glove and open the keg to reposition and get the beer dip tube submerged again, which will prevent beer from exposing to air. suggest cut the silicone hose length to 2-3 cm far from keg bottom to keep tubing submerged and leave trub inside keg effectively.
  • Pre-assembled Floating Ball Improves Extracting Efficiency: perfect for using in corny keg, cornelius keg and fermenter, you need to cut the length of silicone hose to fit beer kegs with different depths, suggest cut your own beer keg long stainless liquid dip tube with tools to get a good effect if necessary. the metal ring is pre-assembled to the floating ball and the stainless tube, which ensures metal ring goes through 2 holes of stainless tube letting beer out without taking any sediment.
  • Flexible Silicone Tubing Does Not Need Hot Water: the silicone dip tube hose features I.D 6 mm, it has great stretchability and ductility, flexible and stretchy enough at all temps, matches to the 5/16'' stainless tube of the floating ball perfectly without using hot water to make it fit, it also will stretch over other 3/16'' barb fittings or 5/16'' keg tube connectors excellently, a must have for fermenting in cornelius kegs!
  • Healthy Stainless and 31'' Silicone Dip Tube: the floating beer ball is made of stainless steel 304, not easy to get rust, healthy silicone dip tube is no odors, will not bring bad smell to beverage. 31'' silicone dip tube is long enough to work in 55L FermZilla perfectly, a few inches of silicone hose has to be trimmed to fit for other model corny, cornelius keg, allows you to serve clear home brew beer, cold brew coffee, soda water, iced tea at different activities.

Black Finally Back in Stock!… Color Coded Post O-Rings in Gray and Black to Match QDs

If you’ve read Homebrew Finds for long you’ve no doubt seen Valuebrew’s Blue and Green Custom Color O-Rings in food grade silicone. These are featured in our very popular keg rebuild step by step.

Valuebrew has introduced Gray and Black o-rings. As the picture indicates these are designed to match standard gray and black keg QDs.  These have become standard colors on ball lock, pin lock (usually the bottom portion of the QD) and even Kegland QDs (center portion).

The Blue and Green are meant to be remembered by “Blue for Beer” and “Green for Gas”

All options are made from FDA rated silicone. Since they work equally well on gas and liquid posts you can also mix and match to come up with your own color coding standard.

Update: The custom color black have been out of stock for MONTHS. As of this update they’re back in stock.

About Food Safe Materials:

  • For whatever reason, it’s difficult to find food safe keg o-rings.  Maybe some of the o-rings that are available are food safe, but very few are actually labeled as such.
  • The fact is we’re putting beer (food) in our kegs and we should be using food safe materials whenever we can.  More Info: Food Safe Replacement Keg O-Rings
  • Finally a food safe option!  Valuebrew has a selection of silicone food grade o-rings.  They also have replacement universal poppet o-rings and internal QD o-rings, also food grade.
