Applications:

I ran across this carbonation cap and thought it was interesting because it sports a different design than a lot of the ones we see. The body has a textured/knurled finish that looks like would make it easier to tighten and loosen compared to smooth wall style designs. Most of the smooth wall design make up for it by including a notch that you can put a wrench on tighten and loosen.

Hands on Review: GrowlerWerks uKeg 128

When I initially migrated from bottling to kegging, I was glad to be free of bottle wrangling. I didn’t have to keep boxes of empties, deal with cleaning/sanitizing, or the bottle-filling process. I also didn’t have to deal with bottling sugar calculators that had me making bottle bombs with cold-fermented lagers, or ales that sat mysteriously for weeks without developing carbonation of any intensity. But not long after leaving the bottles behind, I ran into the issue of how to share my beers. Of course I could invite people over, but there’s always that party at a friend’s house or a neighbor that really likes NEIPA but can’t make it to your tasting party.

To keep your homebrew mobile, you can go the way of glass growlers like the brewery taprooms do. It’s got the same appeal at home as it does at the brewery- cheap and easy. But it limits you on key aspects of freshness and ability to stay cold at a party. If you think about it, it’s akin to taking a 4-pack of your favorite beer you want to share, opening the bottles and pouring it into an empty pop bottle, and screwing the lid on it. Let’s face it, your homebrew is a labor of love, and it’s natural to want to show it off to friends & neighbors. So when you think a bit about the best way to present your baby, it’s not surprising homebrewers look for something beyond the glass growler with screw-on lid.

GrowlerWerks came onto the homebrewing scene when it completed its successful Kickstarter campaign in December of 2014. They initially launched with a high-tech upgrade to the standard glass growler with their 64 oz pressurized/insulated growler. The 128 oz version came along about a year later with all the same features, but with a full gallon capacity. That’s a great difference. The uKeg 64 holds four 16-oz pints. That works well for loaning out a sample to a friend. The uKeg 128 holds eight 16-oz pints. Now you’re talking something useful to bring to a party. The 64 almost felt like more trouble than it was worth to take to a party, unless you were bringing more than one brew. But with the 128 you don’t have to show up and then hide it until your craft brew friends find you and get to sample it before it’s gone.

Some carbonation cap models are universal fit and some work only with gas posts.  For draft line cleaning projects to work well, at least in my opinion, the carb cap that’s used needs to be universal. Applications:

  • PET Bottles as Growlers: These are generally intended to convert 1L and 2L bottles to growlers.  Fill up a 1L or 2L PET bottle with your favorite homebrew.  Put one of these on (purge the headspace by squeezing if you want to) and then pressurize for transport.  This should help to reduce oxygen pickup and maintain carbonation levels.
  • Fine tune or rapidly carbonate beer: You can also use this cap to rapidly carbonate beer.  Same process as for transport, just set your regulator to the proper pressure and shake or agitate the PET bottle to help introduce CO2.  Or hook it up to CO2 and let it sit in you kegerator.

Some carbonation cap models are universal fit and some work only with gas posts.  For draft line cleaning projects to work well, at least in my opinion, the carb cap that’s used needs to be universal. As of this posting, the product page says this works with both liquid and ball lock posts.  Check the product description for current specs.

A growler with style! Your friends will be impressed before you ever crack the lid. ‘What is a growler?’ you ask – typically it is a plain 1 gallon glass jar with a screw cap that is used to store, move and serve your draft beer. The growler is filled from the tap (we suggest filling a cold growler from the bottom with a section of 1/2″ id tubing connected to your faucet) and then transporting to friends. This is much easier than moving a whole keg, and it limits your friends consumption of your homebrew!

This ancient looking, german-styled model, is certainly the Rolls Royce of growlers. Have you ever ridden in a Rolls Royce? I haven’t, but I imagine this growler will deliver you that same type of high-roller experience without those annoyingly spendy maintenance costs.

A #10 Stopper fits in the opening.

 

This is one of the first nice growlers that I purchased and I still love it. It’s very well built and looks great.

There is a lot of equipment out there for making draft homebrew mobile. Like different tools in a toolbox, each one is designed for a given situation. A draft box or jockey box is ideal for a group/party situation where you’ll be serving your beer away from your home. Or maybe it’s still at your home, but you’re serving your beer at a party in your backyard and don’t want to have a constant flow of people in & out of your house to refill their cups. A jockey box is made from a regular picnic cooler and has standard shanks/taps mounted through the wall, and a length of beer line inside sitting on ice to keep beer cold as it heads to the faucets.

The first building block of a jockey box is the cooler you install the hardware in. The Komos Rubicon Draft Box uses a heavy-duty roto molded cooler as its base. It has a tough 2.5 mm thick skin, and in-between is filled with high density foam to provide insulation. With most coolers, you get all your heat transfer through a plastic-to-plastic fit with the lid. But the Komos has a thick, engineered seal, and uses two stretchy rubber latches to keep it compressed down tight. Rounding out its features, it has rope handles with molded grips, and 4 broad durable rubber feet on the bottom to prevent it from sliding around or scratching the surface it sits on.
