Possible brewing uses could include: getting and keeping strike water at temp, direct use (with a filter bag in a mash tun or BIAB mash), maintaining temperature for sour mashes and getting to a boil more quickly (or helping to maintain a boil) for both all grain and extract batches. The DigiMash system represents the best value in electric all-grain brewing you’ll find. With a 9 gallon Digiboil electric kettle and the Digimash stainless steel mashing acessory pack included, this is by far the most affordable way to get into electric all-grain brewing. It may not have all the bells and whistles of the BrewZilla, but it does have everything you need to mash and boil all in one unit. Setting up and using the DigiMash couldn’t be easier. Simply place the false bottom inside the kettle and install the malt pipe, fill with water and heat to your desired strike temperature, then add your grain and set your desired mash temperature on the digital controller. Once your mash is complete, lift up the malt pipe, drain the wort and sparge, then remove the malt pipe and proceed to boil.

If you’re deciding between the DigiMash and the BrewZilla, there are a couple of key differences worth noting. One of our favorite features of the BrewZilla is the programmable mash steps and delayed start, which the DigiMash does not have. You can still step mash by simply raising the temperature manually on the controller, but the automatic steps are a convenient feature if you want to set it and forget it.

The other major difference between the two systems is that the BrewZilla features a built-in pump for recirculating the mash. Recirculation is a great way to improve mash efficiency, but it is far from required for a successful brew day. Using an external pump with the DigiMash is also an option, and one can be integrated for mash recirculation quite easily. Simply connect the ball valve to the inlet of your pump, and then connect the outlet of the pump to our Sparge Arm Assembly.

This model comes with the 35L DigiBoil, which has two built-in heating elements that run off a 110V plug. One element is 1000w and the other is 500w for a combined 1500 watts! The elements can be individually controlled, allowing you to use a single element to gently hold temperatures, or engage both elements to quickly go from mash temp to boiling. Temperatures are set and automatically maintained through the digital control panel. Simply set your desired temperature and flip on the heating element(s).

Integrated stainless ball valve comes with a 13mm barb (approx. 1/2″). The barb can be removed to attach fittings with 1/2″ FPT, such as our female threaded quick disconnect.

DigiMash Stainless Steel Accessory Pack Includes:

False bottom
Malt pipe
Wire support
Malt pipe handle
Malt pipe bottom screen

Installation & Use:

Place the false bottom inside the kettle
Install the wire support in the channel located at the top of the kettle
Place the mesh screen inside the malt pipe and attach the handle
Lower the malt pipe into the kettle so it rests on the wire support
Fill with strike water and heat to desired temperature
Add grain, stir until well mixed, and adjust controller to target mash temperature
When your mash is complete, use the handle to lift out malt pipe and rotate 90° so the malt pipe feet sit on the wire support
Allow the wort to drain into the kettle and sparge the grain with warm water (165-175°F)
When you’re done collecting wort, remove the malt pipe and proceed to boil

Please note: only the 500-watt element should be used to increase mash temperatures when the Malt Pipe is in place. Using the higher watt element(s) with the Malt Pipe inserted may cause scorching of the grain.

You can buy this as a bare-bones kit elsewhere on the site and add whatever wire length and element you want. This particular item is a ready to plug in heat source that is fully prewired for you with the features most commonly requested.

It includes the bare bones hotrod hardware, an element (choice in dropdown), 9 feet of 14/3 SJEOOW cable (or 12/3 if you choose the 2200 watt option), and a plug (choice in dropdown). Note that approximately 2 feet of the cable length is consumed by the drop conduit and internal wiring so from the cable grip to the plug measures an actual 9 feet.

*Please note that if you plan to use a temperature controller of any kind that will interrupt power to the hot rod, you should use a standard plug on the Hot Rod and plug the controller into a GFCI protected outlet. It his not recommended to constantly make and break power *through* a GFCI plug.

If you would like to add additional footage of the 14/3 cable, add it as a separate line item and note in comments to add that additional length to the hotrod. If you select the 2200 watt element, please note that any additional cable must be the 12/3 type.

Options:
Vertical conduit bend options: Left straight, you get about 28″ of overall height. This option only needs to used if you have a very deep pot. The most common option is the 90 degree bend. This allows for less strain on the cord but the max pot depth (if you want it to nearly sit on the bottom) is 23″. Finally, if your pot is only about 19″ tall, you can opt for the 170 degree bend which will loop you over the pot wall like a Sheppard’s hook and make the wire drop straight down. If you are using this in addition to a flame under your pot, the 90 degree bend gives you the best clearance to keep the wire away.
Plug type: Standard plug is just a 15 amp 3-prong plug that will fit any standard outlet. If you choose this option, we HIGHLY recommend that you confirm that the outlet you will use regularly is GFCI protected (the ones with the test/reset buttons). The other option is to purchase our GFCI adapter found in the accessory list on the right. This will protect you from potential shock regardless of the outlet type you plug into.
Element wattage. You have a choice between a ULWD 1650 watt element, which will run on a typical 120 volt / 15 amp household circuit and a LWD 2200 watt element but keep in mind if you select this, you must select the 20 amp plug in the “plug type” dropdown menu. This option requires that you already have a 120 volt / 20 amp circuit available that it already have a GFCI protected receptacle installed. Be sure you know what you have to work with before purchasing this option.
The minimum pot width for this unit is 11.5″. It WILL fit the Grainfather, Mash N Boil, etc.

GRAINFATHER, Mash N Boil, Robobrew USER FAQ:

1. Have you heard of anyone using this on a grainfather?
Grainfather users are my top customer base for the hot rod. The 90 degree bend works great.

2. How much faster will the water heat?
The stock 1600watt heater in the GF takes 60 minutes to take 7 gallons of water from 70f to 158F. With the addition of the 1500 watt Hot Rods, it will reduce it to 30 minutes.
Similarly, when you pull the grain and start ramping to a boil, the ramp will take 18 minutes instead of 35.
3. How do I control the boil?
Once you hit boil, instead of running the grainfather on the higher 1600 watt setting, it’s best to let the hotrod run at full power and then switch the GF into mash mode which only adds 500 watts but the combined 2000 is about right for a decent rolling boil.

4. Can I plug the Hot Rod into the same outlet as the Grainfather?
Absolutely not. The GF and Hot Rod both require a 15 amp circuit that is not already being used for other appliances at the same time. Plugging them both in to the same circuit will trip your circuit breaker almost immediately. The easiest way to figure out if two receptacles are on the same circuit is to plug a radio in to your intended location, turn it up loud and then flip breakers off until the sound stops. Then go hunting to find the nearest receptacle that is still on.

A real issue with these and a lot of other stuff that Brew Hardware carries is availability. They seem to struggle. Along with that offerings can change quickly.
