Hands on Review: Milwaukee MW600 Dissolved Oxygen Meter – New Updates, Re-Worked Experiments

This review is by Homebrew Finds Contributor Brad Probert.  Brad is an engineer, expert homebrewer and experienced reviewer.  Grab a link to Brad’s website at the end of this review.

Brewing is a mix of art and science. When you get it just right, the results are incredibly rewarding. For us nerds out there, sometimes the science can be its own reward, even if it doesn’t lead to better beer. The homebrewing world has LoDo brewers that are interested in reducing oxygen pick up at every stage of the brewing process. And hoppy beer lovers devote a lot of effort trying to reduce oxygen pickup to stave off the evils of hop oxidation. So this is a point where the science can help you make the better beer you want. A Dissolved Oxygen (DO) meter is a tool you can use to experiment and learn more.

Milwaukee Instruments makes a wide variety of digital measuring instruments to measure all manner of things in liquids. Those of relevance to the brewing world include digital refractometers, pH meters, and dissolved oxygen meters. Their MW600 Dissolved Oxygen Meter is the subject of this review. This meter functions using the polarographic method. It passes a small current through the liquid it is submerged in, and the amount of Oxygen present affects the sensor reading as the current flows through it.

Oxygen Air Flow Meter 0.1-5LPM Gas Flowmeter [Assist with Wort Oxygenation]

Flowmeter LZQ-1 Air Flow Rate Gauge 1~5LPM Oxygen Measuring Flowmeter Gauge

Flowmeter LZQ-1 Air Flow Rate Gauge 1~5LPM Oxygen Measuring Flowmeter Gauge

Why An Oxygen Flow Meter?

Most regulators that homebrewers use for oxygenating wort are simple setups – Example – via William’s Brewing.  They attach to disposable oxygen tanks (typically sourced from a local hardware store) and are little more than on and off valves.  No gauges, no pressure control (other than the degree to which you open and close the valve) and no flow control.

Time and rate give you an idea of how much oxygen you’re really adding to your wort.  Time is easy to track.  Rate, not so much, at least with typical homebrew O2 regulators.  If you want more or less oxygen for your next batch, it’s mostly a guessing game.

Enter an oxygen flow meter.  A flow meter, gives you an idea of flow rate

Oxygen Flow Meter w/ Duotight Fittings FE401

Oxygen Flow Meter w/ Duotight Fittings via MoreBeer

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Take the guesswork out of oxygenation with this handy flow meter. If you’re using pure O2 to oxygenate your wort, you’re likely using a disposable cylinder with a simple brass regulator, and have no way to measure how much oxygen is actually being added. You’re essentially left to finding the “sweet spot” on the dial when you open the regulator and aim for the same spot on the next use. Get repeatable results by adding this flow meter to your setup. This device will allow you to dial in the flow rate and help you add the same amount of oxygen from batch to batch.

The flow meter comes with male flare thread inlet and outlet and includes two Duotight fittings. It’s ready for use with 8 mm OD EVABarrier tubing right out of the box, or you can add a swivel nut and barb for use with other size tubings.

For a good starting point, we recommend using a 0.5 micron diffusion stone and adding pure O2 at a 1L/minute flow rate for 60 seconds to acheive the recommened 10-14 ppm dissolved oxygen.

Features:

  • 1/4″ Male Flare Inlet/Outlet
  • Duotight Fittings for 8 mm OD Tubing Included
  • Scaled for 0.1 to 1.4 L/min Flow Rate
  • 3.6″ H x 0.9″ W

Why a Flow Meter? Most regulators that homebrewers use for oxygenating wort are simple setups – Example – via William’s Brewing.  They attach to disposable oxygen tanks (typically sourced from a local hardware store) and are little more than on and off valves.  No gauges, no pressure control (other than the degree to which you open and close the valve) and no flow control.

Enter a flow meter.  This particular model has a range of 0 to 5 LPM.  This model also appears to have an knob that allows you to adjust the flow rate.  Note: .6 MPa is about 87 PSI.

With both time and flow rate you can establish a more reliable baseline to work off of.  This information should also help you to get better repeatability between brews.

MoreBeer is discounting a slew of gear and ingredients via their Black Friday Sale. They’ve launched a rotating selection of deals early, presumably to try and stave off supply chain related issues. These are their actual Black Friday Deals. If you see something you like, I suggest buying it while you can.

Note from HBF: These type of filters are sometimes used as part of oxygenation or aeration setups.  I’ve also used a similar filter to help start a siphon.  See MoreBeer’s Sterile Siphon Starter for more info on that process.  The basic idea is you use a compatible carboy hood and racking cane and blow into a compatible filter to start the flow of liquid.  The filter used in MoreBeer’s setup looks similar to this one, although I’m not certain it’s identical.

Oxgenation System from William’s Brewing

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Why aerate your wort? Yeast needs oxygen to reproduce and produce strong cell walls. If the cell walls are weak, the yeast will have a low tolerance for alcohol, and can die before fully fermenting out the wort. Particularly in worts with starting gravities in excess of 1.050, this can contribute to long lag times, slow ferments, and higher than normal finishing gravities. Like an air stone in a fish tank provides oxygen for fish to breathe, wort aeration provides needed oxygen for yeast respiration and growth.

The advantage of the Oxygen Aeration System is that the wort can be aerated to 60% of its oxygen holding capacity in just 20 seconds, something that takes our Air Aeration System 5 minutes to accomplish. This shorter aeration means less foaming of the wort before pitching, an important consideration in higher gravity beers. This system includes a .5 micron aeration wand, for thorough oxygen dispersion.

Includes 22″ Aeration Wand with a .5 micron stainless aeration stone, 4′ of tubing, and an Oxygen Regulator for standard hardware store oxygen welding tanks. Pictured red oxygen bottle is not included, these disposable 1.4 and 2.1 ounce left hand thread bottles can be purchased at any hardware store in the welding or brazing section. One bottle will aerate 20 to 30 batches. Pictured glass carboy is not included.

Why buy a William’s Oxygen Aeration System? It has a 22″ U.S. made stainless wand, longer than any other system, so you can easily reach the bottom of a 5 or 6 gallon fermenter without dipping the plastic tubing into the wort.

Unlike other Oxygen Aeration Systems, which feature imported regulators and wands, all parts are made in U.S.A.

Includes oxygen regulator (made in the US) for use with disposable oxygen bottles (not included, typically found at local hardware stores), tubing, stainless steel wand and .5 micron aeration stone.
