Hands on Review Kegland BlowTie Spunding Valve v1

The BlowTie Spunding Valve assembly consists of the BlowTie, a DuoTight Tee Fitting, a DuoTight to flare fitting, a DuoTight pressure gauge and two small pieces of EVABarrier Tubing.

Building a Digital Spunding Valve

A Spunding Valve allows you to maintain a set pressure.  If pressure in the vessel exceeds the set point, it is expelled.  It generally consists of an adjustable PRV valve, a tee, a gauge and a way to connect to your keg.  Read lots and lots more about Spunding Valves, ways to use them and different build options on our Spunding Valve Resource Post

Building a digital Spunding Valve is as simple as using a digital gauge in your Spunding Valve Build.

digital spunding valveI tried a couple different digital gauges and settled on this one – pictured in the assembly above.  The other gauge I tried was much more expensive and didn’t really work well.  It drifted wildly.  This was a reasonable price and has given me accurate and consistent readings.  This photo shows two gauges hooked up to the same keg – agreeing on PSI.

The really nice thing about this digital gauge is the .1 PSI resolution.  That’s really handy if you’re using the gauge to try and find leaks.  It allows you to see pressure changes more quickly.

My gauge came with this user manual/specifications sheet – front | back.  One quick tip… the threads aren’t super long.  The first time I put this digital Spunding Valve together, I noticed the pressure dropping, again… the .1 PSI resolution is handy for spotting just this issue!  Anyway, I didn’t have the gauge quite tight enough and it was showing a slow leak.  Easy fix, I took the gauge off, put a couple extra wraps of teflon tape around it and tightened it a little more.  Whammo!

What is Cold Crashing?

Cold Crashing is chilling your beer after fermentation is complete.  Typically you want to get as close to freezing as possible, without actually freezing your beer.  These cooler temperatures cause break, yeast and trub matter to drop out of your beer.  This increases clarity, helps to hasten the conditioning process and helps you get a cleaner transfer to your serving vessel.

1/4″ MPT Threaded QD!

The lineup contains an innovative and unique offering. a 1/4″ MPT threaded variation.  Why, oh, why would you want this?  Well one great reason is a Spunding Valve Build.

To build what we call a Style 1 Build you need to connect the tee to an MFL QD, a swivel JIC to NPT fitting is required. Those are tough to find in stainless steel and usually… very expensive.

This Ball Lock Keg QD is stainless steel and eliminates the need for the JIC to NPT fitting. That’s a big cost savings. Beyond that, it’s a simplification of the build. One less item to buy, adjust and maintain.

The BlowTie is a diaphragm based adjustable spunding valve used to release pressure from kegs and other pressure vessels. Compact ball lock spunding valve features a 0-30 PSI gauge and now features an adjustable manual pressure pull ring relief valve (adjusts from 0-15 PSI). The adjustable manual pressure release can be removed, and a corny keg pressure relief valve installed in its place. The gauge features a standard DuoTight 8mm stem, and can be replaced with our DuoTight gauges, like our items C18, Z97, and E69 if desired.

Lots of ways to use this and upgrade it. If you want more accuracy than the manual adjustable spring loaded relief valve, you can upgrade with our item C16 DuoTight Blowtie valve, which has a rubber diaphragm valve which will always be more accurate at low pressures than the included spring loaded adjustable relief valve. If you do this, you will also need DuoTight Joiner, item number C70.

You can also replace the manual adjustable relief valve with preset keg relief valves like our item G65 (17 PSI) or B54 (0-30 PSI).
