BlowTie Diaphragm Spunding Valve with Gauge from MoreBeer

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

The Blow Tie Spunding Valve is used to release excess pressure on a pressurized fermenter or from a receiving keg during pressure transfers. This diaphragm spunding valve is much more accurate than the spring and poppet style, and works much better at lower pressures.

The BlowTie 2 features an integrated pressure gauge so you can quickly and easily dial in your pressure setting. The gauge is removable and can be swapped out with a gauge of a different pressure range.

Pressure Fermentation

Pressure fermentation is becoming more and more popular at the homebrew level, but in order to do it safely and accurately you need a way to release excess pressure. You’ll pressurize your vessel to your desired psi, but once fermentation begins and those hungry, active yeast start creating CO2, the pressure inside the vessel will increase. Attach a spunding valve and set it to your desired pressure, and it will blow off when the pressure gets too high and close up again when it’s back to your desired psi.

Pressure Transfers
Even if you don’t have a pressurizable fermenter, you may have done pressure transfers from keg to keg during filtering or after fining. During pressure transfers, it’s a good idea to have a bit of head pressure in the receiving keg, especially if you’re transferring beer that is already carbonated. Having a spunding valve in place will allow you to consistently control the head pressure and give you more consistent results, without losing carbonation in the process.

Diaphragm vs. Poppet
With the poppet style spunding valve, a spring pushes against a poppet to keep the valve closed. When the poppet lifts up to open, the surface area the gas pushes against becomes larger, and the spring has to work harder to push the poppet down and reseal the valve. This can lead to more gas being released than intended, and the remaining pressure in your vessel may be at a lower psi than your spunding valve’s set psi.

Instead of a poppet, the spring inside the BlowTie pushes against a diaphragm, which has an immensely larger surface area. This means the surface area that the gas pushes against while the diaphragm is closed is significantly closer to the surface area it pushes against when the diaphragm is open. This leads to higher accuracy, and the remaining pressure after excess gas is released will be much closer to your set blow off pressure.

Set Up
The BlowTie spunding valve comes with 8 mm Duotight fittings on the inlet and outlet, and we recommend using it with EVABarrier 8 mm OD tubing (D1717 or D1718). You’ll also need the flare Duotight fitting (DUO106) in order to attach it to a ball lock or pin lock disconnect. Dialing in your desired pressure is even easier with the BlowTie 2, thanks to the integrated pressure gauge. Simply start with the adjustment knob fully closed, then slowly open it until the gauge reading matches your desired pressure setting.

Specifications:

  • Made from food grade acetal
  • Stainless screws
  • Easily disassembles for cleaning
  • 8mm (5/16″) Duotight fittings at both ends
  • Interchangeable pressure gauge
  • Gauge reads from 0-23 psi

Spunding Valve Tips, Tricks & Troubleshooting

spunding valve tips

A Spunding Valve allows you to maintain a set pressure. If pressure in the vessel exceeds the set point, it is expelled. It generally consists of an adjustable PRV valve, a tee, a gauge and a way to connect to your keg.

Why a Spunding Valve?

There are loads of homebrew related applications for a Spunding valve ranging from pressurized ferementation to naturally carbonating to fixing over carbonated beers and lots more.  Check out our resource post on the subject.  It’s arguably the go-to resource on the Internet on the subject

Spunding Valve Tips, Tricks & Troubleshooting

  1. Check for leaks.  If you’re using a version that has a QD installed in some form or fashion, you can pressurize it on a keg and then take it off.  There will be a small drop when you take it off, but the pressure should remain steady after that.  If it’s going down, make sure everything is tight.  If you don’t have a QD… spray with Star San or soapy water until you are leak free.
  2. I’ve found the scale on the adjustable PRV that I’ve used – Control Devices CR Series Brass Pressure Relief Valve, 0-100 psi Adjustable Pressure Range, 1/4″ Male NPT – to be largely unhelpful. This is the reason that a gauge, in my opinion, is essential.
  3. Setting desired pressure can be tricky. See our tips for making that easy.

SPUNDit 2.0 Spunding Valve

Spunding valves are probably one of the most boring pieces of homebrew kit. They perform a very simple function of mechanically regulating air/gas pressure. They can be used in various ways around the home brewery to do some cool stuff when it comes to fermentation, or when dealing with kegging. The SPUNDit does all the work of a regular spunding valve but does it in a swanky package.

SPUNDit 2.0 Spunding Valve – via eBay

Full Content of Kit

There are two parts to any spunding valve- an adjustment knob connected to a mechanical valve, and a pressure gauge that measures the pressure it’s regulating. The SPUNDit is a diaphragm valve type of spunding, which has better operation than a poppet type. The diaphragm valve has a larger surface area for the regulation pressure to act upon and has better pressure regulation control because its opening & closing pressures have less hysteresis. The SPUNDit has a long travel spring and fine pitch thread on the adjustment knob, allowing you to make very minute changes in the regulation pressure.

Setting Spunding Valve Pressure

When setting desired pressure… start higher than your desiged set point and slowly work your way down.  As the valve gets close to where it is going to eventually settle, it slows down the release of gas.  Working your way slowly down, helps you hit your desired pressure without passing it (going too low).

Naturally Carbonating in Your Fermenter with a Spunding Valve

Naturally Carbonating with a Spunding Valve

Carbonation directly in your keg allows you to naturally carbonate your beer (saving CO2 and $) while maintaining reasonably tight control on carbonation levels.  This could be done by adding priming sugar, capping fermentation prior to the completion of fermentation or more traditional krausening (adding wort back to the fermenter).

Basic Steps for Carbonating in a Keg Using a Spunding Valve:

  • Ferment in a pressure capable fermenter. A 5 gallon keg works for small batches. Other options are available for larger batches including this like 10 gallon kegs.
  • Prime the keg with your choice of priming sugar or wort (or start this process late in fermentation when some fermentable sugars remain)
  • Determine your desired pressure based on temperature and desired carbonation using a carbonation chart.  See: Balancing Your Draft System for a carbonation chart.
  • Pressurize the keg to just over your desired final pressure.
  • Attach the Spunding Valve
  • Slowly dial down the pressure until you achieve your desired pressure – More about setting pressure
  • Wait.  As the remaining simple sugars are fermented, carbonation occurs and excess CO2 will be expelled from the spunding valve giving you just the right amount of carbonation.  I give it a couple days after reaching target pressure.  If you’re less sure how much fermentable sugar remained, I would suggest giving it a few days longer.
  • Chill your keg, allowing your beer to absorb head space CO2 and reach equilibrium.

This is a 2.5 gallon batch of beer that I fermented and naturally carbonated all in a 5 gallon keg.  I poured this immediately after it was transferred from the fermenter keg into a serving keg.

BlowTie Diaphragm Spunding Valve WITH Gauge

WARNING: Do not exceed gauge pressure. Exceeding the pressure range will damage the gauge.

  • DuoTight Fittings and Accessories along with EVABarrier Tubing are… awesome.  In my opinion, the system is a game-changer for kegerator owners and builders.
