I’ve done several pressure tests with DuoTight Fittings and EVABarrier Tubing. Each test has proven the tested components were leak free. Having said that, it’s entirely possible that you’ll have a leak. This happens with any tubing system, that’s why we… check for leaks.

Hands on Review: Kegland Cannular Can and Bottle Filler!

Kegland Cannular Can and Bottle Filler

Those of us that have been in the hobby a while, typically keg our beer. It’s much less time consuming than bottling a batch of beer, and you can get your carbonation much more reliably. There is some pretty good gear out there to take your kegs mobile with you, but individual bottles/cans still have their place. Particularly if you’re sharing a batch of beer amongst friends. Bottles can be cleaned and reused multiple times without too much fuss. So even if you keg everything you make, if you’re sharing a batch, you’re probably pulling out the bottles and a bag of caps.

I’ve tried several different tools for bottling my beer. A beer gun kind of worked, but it required a lot of extra hoops to jump through to keep the beer under control enough to not end up with half a bottle of foam. The counterpressure bottle filler resulted in a good bottle of beer, but it could be a little messy at times and take longer than you may want to spend if you’re doing a large number of bottles. Kegland introduced a semi-automated Cannular Can & Bottle Filler, and it notably speeds up the bottling process. It can be used to fill either cans or bottles.

The Kegland Cannular Filler is a smallish unit that you mount to something. It has holes if you want to mount it to a vertical surface like a wall, or horizontal surface like a table. Since it fills your bottle/can hands-free, it needs to be attached to something that can support it while you’re doing something else. It has two ball lock posts- one for the incoming beer from your keg, and one for CO2 to purge the bottle before it starts to fill with beer. There’s a small digital LED screen readout and a couple buttons for you to adjust menu settings and lastly a “GO” button that begins the fill. The final control feature it has is a manual fill button that can be used if any fine-tuning is needed for unique bottle shapes, etc.

This molded male ball lock valve coupling cap that fits a 2 liter or smaller plastic soda bottle with a 28mm screw cap lid. This allows the 2 liter bottle to be charged with C02 from any female ball lock gas fitting (like our item D32 or D03 Gas Connector), carbonating the cold beverage in the bottle. Great for serving draft beer away from the keg. Also fits the Brewzilla in and out ports on the lid, and the Brewzilla Collection Jar ports for pressurizing the Brewzilla fermenter. The hose barb on the bottom is also compatible with our DuoTight fitting Z84 and C55 which lets you easily attach a ball lock fitting to an EvaBarrier 8mm or 9mm outer diameter line.

This has a hybrid ball lock post that will accept beer and gas lines.

IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING: FOR USE ON PLASTIC SODA BOTTLES AND BREWZILLA ONLY, NEVER USE ON GLASS BOTTLES

 

What are these used for?

  • PET Bottles as Growlers: These are generally intended to convert 1L and 2L bottles to growlers.  Fill up a 1L or 2L PET bottle with your favorite homebrew.  Put one of these on (purge the headspace by squeezing if you want to) and then pressurize for transport.  This should help to reduce oxygen pickup and maintain carbonation levels.
  • Fine tune or rapidly carbonate beer: You can also use this cap to rapidly carbonate beer.  Same process as for transport, just set your regulator to the proper pressure and shake or agitate the PET bottle to help introduce CO2.  Or hook it up to CO2 and let it sit in you kegerator.
  • Flushing Carboys, Fermenters and Kegs – As a piece of tubing the barb, hook to your CO2 line and use this to flush receiving vessels with CO2 to reduce O2 pickup.

When DuoTights first came out, the solution for connecting kegs to EVABarrier was using an MFL QD + DuoTight Flare fitting. That works just fine and is still the only option available to pin lock keg users.

This is a look at Kegland Rigid Joiners, part number KL18012.

These are designed to easily join DuoTight fittings together without using EVABarrier tubing.  That’s handy for close connections and if… gasp, you aren’t a DuoTight/EVABarrier user.  The rigid joiners allow you to put DuoTight parts and pieces together without purchasing an entire roll of EVABarrier.

Rigid Joiners, part number KL18012. To my knowledge these are available in 8mm only. I’d venture a guess that this is the most common size.

You may have a hard time finding a more affordable counter flow wort chiller. For the homebrewer on a budget, these heat exchangers are one the fastest ways to chill wort. Similar in efficiency to the Chillout plate chiller, but much easier to clean. Plate chillers have the disadvantage of getting gunked up in their small crevasses due to trapped hop material. This unit, on the other hand, can be easily and effectively flushed after use.

Copper is a great conductor of heat, making it more efficient than a stainless chiller of similar design. These units are 9″ in diameter and about 7″ high. The input and output are approximately 3/8″ outer diameter (9.5 mm). They can be used with gravity, but we recommend using a pump.

Check out the video below to learn how to set up the chiller with Duotight fittings (DUO115 & DUO116) that will allow you to attach Camlock, QD, or garden hose fittings to the inputs and outputs, and enable you to control the flow rate at the water inlet.
