Hands on Review: Brewers Hardware Tri-Clover Sample Valve

Brewers Hardware TC Sample Port

There are different types of valves, suited for different purposes. On a fermentor, it is useful to have a valve that has the ability to pull small samples for gravity readings or taste samples, but also able to flow well when it comes time for transfer to a keg. The sample port valve provides fine adjustment to flow rate, allowing you to vary between a slow trickle for pulling a sample or a higher flow rate for gravity transfer to fill a keg.

Valve Handle with 2 O-rings and Silicone Seat

The sample port valve has a fine pitch thread to allow for small adjustments to the opening of the valve. With the Brewers Hardware sample port valve, you can feel while turning the knob that the threads and the stem of the valve are machined to tolerances for a precise fit and without slop or wobble. The valve stem has 2 O-rings to keep beer from sneaking out or air sneaking in. And the tip of the valve has a silicone bumper that gets compressed onto a seat for a secure fit to prevent leaks when closed. Silicone is non-porous, making it easy to clean and not harbor stow-aways from one ferment to another. And its elasticity allows it to conform to the valve shape for a good seal, yet spring back so it can be used over and over again to seal and unseal.

The overall quality of the valve from Brewers Hardware was top-notch. The surfaces were smooth-polished stainless steel, and the ridges on the adjustment knob were cleanly machined for grip with no sharp edges. Turning the adjustment knob, it felt precise with no slop or wobble, with a tight seal. It’s difficult to give justice to the fit & finish of the part with just words or a couple pictures, but it really stands out.

Camlock QDs at PFD! I’ve used ProFlow Dynamics Quick Disconnects on my kettles, mash tun, pumps and tubing for a longtime. They have worked great for me. I put male connectors kettles, mash tuns and pumps and use female connectors for tubing. Standardizing on this (or the opposite) means you can use tubing as jumpers and always have the availability to connect your gear.

These are made from Stainless Steel and are available in lots of configurations. Those are classified by Type and Size. Type may mean something in “commercial cam lock fitting circles”, but I was initially confused by this. Types are akin to model numbers. For example, Type A is Female NPT to Male Cam and Groove.

Kegland’s DuoTight system along with their EVABarrier Tubing are amazing. Check out my extensive hands on review for a deep dive into the system.

This is a look at Kegland Rigid Joiners, part number KL18012.

These are designed to easily join DuoTight fittings together without using EVABarrier tubing. That’s handy for close connections and if… gasp, you aren’t a DuoTight/EVABarrier user. The rigid joiners allow you to put DuoTight parts and pieces together without purchasing an entire roll of EVABarrier.

Rigid Joiners, part number KL18012. To my knowledge these are available in 8mm only. I’d venture a guess that this is the most common size.

Brewers Hardware TC Sight Glasses

A large sight glass on a brew rig set-up can legitimately be classified as a luxury. There are various ways to assess your wort clarity during your brew session. During recirculation of the mash, or during vourlaf, you want to know when your wort is running clear and free of grain debris. Connect a sight glass into your recirculation loop and you can easily see the wort clarity without having to look for grain bits in a recirculation spray. It’s just right there in plain view.

This rigid joiner is made from strong polypropylene. It’s useful to make rigid joins with push in fittings that are dead straight. Although it’s possible to make joins using short pieces of 8mm OD EVABarrier tubing, when mounting parts to a gas board or wall it will often make things much neater if you use these instead. The 50mm length is long enough so even after pushing right into two Duotight 8mm fittings on both ends, you should still have an exposed length of about 3mm so you can still easily take the fittings apart later.

I’ve actually been looking for something like this in a while. A small piece of EVABarrier works, but having something that’s a uniform size and rigid will be very nice for certain applications. A couple applications that quickly come to mind… secondary inline regulator on a keg or flow control fitting on a keg.

When DuoTights first came out, the solution for connecting kegs to EVABarrier was using an MFL QD + DuoTight Flare fitting. That works just fine and is still the only option available to pin lock keg users.

When William’s Brewing listed these, there was no limit, not long after, there was a limit of 15 and then a limit of 8. As of this posting there’s a limit of 4. These are obviously extremely popular. This is an inline secondary regulator. You still need a primary regulator attached to your CO2 tank. The idea is, you set the primary to the highest pressure you will use (without exceeding specifications of any component of your system) and then use these regulators inline (one per line) to fine tune pressure and carbonation. As an example, you could set your primary to 25 PSI for faster force carbonation and set each line to a different pressure based on desired carbonation level.

Fermenting Under Pressure

Pressurized fermentations are becoming increasingly popular, and for a good reason. Some of the benefits that you gain from fermenting beer under pressure are: Lower ester production, being able to ferment at higher temperatures without producing off-flavors, and having your beer carbonated by the end of fermentation (rather than carbonating separately for over a week!). Called Unitanks because you can use them for both fermentation and carbonating. You can serve beer directly from uni tanks, counter pressure fill bottles or easily transfer beer into kegs using pressure.

Fermenting lagers under pressure is a huge benefit of unitank. When yeast ferment under pressure, the production of fruity esters is greatly reduced. This can allow you to brew a lager at 70F an obtain traditional lager flavor. All of the fementers listed below also allow for fermenting under no pressure or greatly reduced pressure which is preferable for making ales where the fruity esters are an essential part of the flavor profile.

Of course you could use these fittings in lots of different applications. One possible application is a Spunding Valve build. This combo includes 2 ball lock QDs. Both are equipped with 1/4 MFL. The gas QD has an integrated check valve. This keeps beer from backflowing into your gas lines. That’s handy in any installation, but I specifically recommend this style of gas QD for DuoTight Installations as they allow you to skip inline check fittings and really clean up your setup.
