Update: FermZilla Pressure Fermenters! – On Sale + Free DuoTight Spunding Valve

Fermenting Under Pressure

Pressurized fermentations are becoming increasingly popular, and for a good reason. Some of the benefits that you gain from fermenting beer under pressure are: Lower ester production, being able to ferment at higher temperatures without producing off-flavors, and having your beer carbonated by the end of fermentation (rather than carbonating separately for over a week!). Called Unitanks because you can use them for both fermentation and carbonating. You can serve beer directly from uni tanks, counter pressure fill bottles or easily transfer beer into kegs using pressure.

Fermenting lagers under pressure is a huge benefit of unitank. When yeast ferment under pressure, the production of fruity esters is greatly reduced. This can allow you to brew a lager at 70F an obtain traditional lager flavor. All of the fementers listed below also allow for fermenting under no pressure or greatly reduced pressure which is preferable for making ales where the fruity esters are an essential part of the flavor profile.

The LinkTech 60PS Series is a lineup of premium plastic Quick Disconnects. These High Quality QDs are made from Food Grade Udel® Polysulfone, a high-strength plastic that is temperature tolerant past boiling (280° Max!), and can handle pressure ranging from a vacuum to 125 psi. All of the 60PS Series will interconnect, and these units will also work seamlessly (and leaklessly!) with CPC Quick Disconnects of the same internal 3/8” flow path. O-rings are a Food Grade EPDM Rubber, and internal valve springs are constructed from 316 Stainless steel.

This is a Male Plug, which can connect to any H501 Series Female Sockets. It has 1/2″ Male NPT threading for use with any product equipped with 1/2″ Female NPT.

While not quite as bulletproof as our Stainless Steel Quick Disconnects, this lineup does offer a few advantages. These can be set up with Shutoffs, which will prevent flow when disconnected, and can be incredibly useful on Pump or Glycol systems. The pricing of these products is more economical, yet the plastic is still food grade at and above boiling temperatures. All in all, these are a premium lineup of quick disconnects with great features and lots of options.

This sturdy food grade polypropylene board features drilled holes for up to 4 Duotight Regulators (item C11). Drilled mounting holes are also included so that once you mount the regulators and DuoTight fittings/tubing to the board, you can also install the board in a convenient location. Also included are cutout boxes so you can line up 4 labels above the regulators.

Note that pictured regulators, screws, Duotight fittings, labels, and EvaBarrier tubing are not included. This is just a base board. 12″ wide, 10.25″ tall, and 3/8″ thick.

Gas manifolds are the best way to provide CO2 to multiple kegs inside your kegerator or keezer. The KOMOS manifold features 1/4″ flare gas inlet and check valves that provide much more flexibility compared to manifolds with barbed valves. Choose the type and size of draft tubing that you prefer. Use 1/4″ or 5/16″ gas line with the appropriate Flare Fitting Set (KEG607 or KEG640), or use EVABarrier—our draft line of choice—with the appropriately sized Duotight Fitting (DUO106 or DUO120).

You can also replace one or more of the check valves with a Ball Lock Post Bulkhead, which allows you to use a gas-in ball lock jumper line as a quick connect option.

Need something bigger than a 4-way manifold? No problem! With this 1/4″ Nipple, you can join multiple manifolds for as many outlets as you need.

This combo includes 4 ball lock QDs – 2 x gas and 2 x liquid. All are equipped with 1/4 MFL and include swivel nuts. The gas QDs have an integrated check valve. This keeps beer from backflowing into your gas lines. Camlock QDs at PFD! I’ve used ProFlow Dynamics Quick Disconnects on my kettles, mash tun, pumps and tubing for a longtime. They have worked great for me. I put male connectors kettles, mash tuns and pumps and use female connectors for tubing. Standardizing on this (or the opposite) means you can use tubing as jumpers and always have the availability to connect your gear.

These are made from Stainless Steel and are available in lots of configurations. Those are classified by Type and Size. Type may mean something in “commercial cam lock fitting circles”, but I was initially confused by this. Types are akin to model numbers. For example, Type A is Female NPT to Male Cam and Groove.

Adding a Tri-clamp Fitting to a Homebrew Keg Lid!

Adding a Tri-clamp Fitting to a Homebrew Keg Lid

Carboys, conicals, buckets, kegs, etc. There is an ever-growing number of options for fermentation vessels. I recently moved away from carboys to experiment with pressurized fermentation. I didn’t feel like buying anything new, so why not repurpose a corny keg for fermentation? This past year I “right-sized” my batches down to 2.5-3 gallons making a corny the perfect size for fermenting. With a couple modifications (shortened dip tube, hop screen, etc), I had an old 5 gallon corny now as a dedicated fermenter. An added bonus was that it fit perfectly in my temp-controlled chest freezer.

I started seeing some other homebrew fermenters with tri-clamp connections on top. Blogs all around showed them used with blowoff tubes, thermowells, carbonation stones, CIP spray balls, etc. It seemed like a great universal connection with a ton of uses. Most importantly to me, I wanted the tri-clamp connection to build an oxygen-free dry hop dropper (that build is an article for another day).

Read on to see my trials and tribulations while adding a TC bulkhead to my corny lid.
Build note: This is a weldless build. If you’ve got the ability/skill/tools to weld stainless, go for it!

Safety Note: Ensure that you are using all tools properly and wearing all the proper PPE. You will be drilling/cutting metal which is both sharp and hot.
