Hands on Review: Northern Brewer Anti-Gravity Transfer Pump

Updated: 5/3/2024

This review is by Homebrew Finds Contributor Brad Probert.  Brad is an engineer, expert homebrewer and experienced reviewer.  Grab a link to Brad’s website at the end of this review.

Northern Brewer Anti-Gravity Transfer Pump

Some homebrew gear has a wide range of use, and some fills a very specific purpose. Those that fill a specific purpose typically become a critical piece in your process that you wonder how you managed before you had it. For me, that was the Anti-Gravity Transfer Pump from Northern Brewer. This pump is specifically intended for use in transferring beer or wort from vessel to vessel during your fermentation and/or kegging processes.

Closeup of Pump Head

The Anti-Gravity pump is a diaphragm pump, which is different than your typical wort pump. Wort pumps are usually an impeller design with a pump head inside with rotating blades that push little bits of fluid along from the inlet to the outlet as they spin. A diaphragm pump has a flexible membrane inside that oscillates back and forth like a trampoline. When the membrane is pushed in one direction, it compresses the fluid and forces it to the outlet. And when the membrane is pulled in the opposite direction, it creates a vacuum in the pump chamber which draws fluid in. A set of check balls ensures flow only goes in one direction.

Finding Wyeast 1764 Rogue Pacman Yeast

Rogue’s “Pacman” Yeast Strain is available to homebrewers via Wyeast 1764.

For whatever reason, these strain is tough to find.

From the AIH’s product description, link below, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Wyeast 1764

Species : Ale

  • Fermentation Temp Range (°F) : 60-72
  • Apparent Attenuation Range (%) : 72-78
  • Flocculation : Medium-High
  • Alcohol Tolerance : 12%

Pitching/Fermentation : John Maier (Rogue Brewmaster) says it loves a 60 degree ferment. Pacman is alcohol tolerant, flocculent, attenuates well and will produce beers with little to no diacetyl.

Notes : Very mild fruit complements a dry, mineral finish making this a fairly neutral strain. Pacman’s flavor profile and performance makes it a great choice for use in many different beer styles.

Best Styles : American Pale Ale, American Amber Ale, American Brown Ale, Brown Porter, Cream Ale, Irish Red Ale, Strong Scotch Ale, Dry Stout, American Stout, Russian Imperial Stout, American IPA, Imperial IPA, American Barleywine, Fruit Beer, Spice/Herb/or Vegetable Beer, Christmas/Winter Specialty Spice Beer, Other Smoked Beer, Wood-Aged Beer

As of this update, I know of a single source for 1764…

If this is out of stock… This is something I keep a close eye on, connect with HBF and I’ll let you know when it becomes available again.

Test Your Homebrew! White Labs Professional Beer Analysis Sample Kit – Test for ABV, IBUs & More

Beer Analysis Sample Kit

White Labs Beer Analysis Sample Kit via Adventures in Homebrewing

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Beer Analysis Sample Kit

The Beer Analysis Sample Kit checks for alcohol by volume and IBUs, with users being able to purchase a multitude of other testing options including diacetyl, alcohol, gluten, bacteria and wild yeast. Additional tests for purchase on Yeastman.com include color analysis, SO2, bacteria and wild yeast, and diacetyl.

(New: This sample test kit has been expanded to include additional tests for the same price as of summer 2014, based on customer feedback).

FAQS

How do these kits work?

Each kit contains a numbered sterile bottle. Fill the bottle with your sample, log on to Yeastman.com to enter your sample info, place the prepaid shipping label on the box and send it back to White Labs. Your results will be emailed to you shortly after its return.

Do I do the testing at home?

All of the testing is done in the analytical laboratory at White Labs. All you need to do is fill up the sample bottle and enter your information online.

What if I want more tests than comes with the kit?

When you log into Yeastman to enter your sample information, you will then have the option to add on additional tests. If something you’re looking for is not listed, you can always give us a call or write us.

This kit comes with directions, a sterile sample bottle and a pre-paid label.  You take a sample of your beer and send it to White Labs for analysis at their analytical laboratory.

The only other similar service that I’ve aware of is White Labs “Big QC” Day.  With that got you was two beers tested for $139.  That was marketed as a $500 service.  To be fair it’s been a while since I’ve seen that offered and I don’t know if this is the most recent price.  Also that included more tests than this kit does.  I think… Diacetyl, alcohol content, calories, color, real and apparent attenuation and microbiological contaminants.  Some of those tests are still available with this analysis kit for an additional charge.

Hands on Review: BrewJacket Immersion Pro

BrewJacket Immersion Pro

Sometimes homebrewing articles give very sage-like advice. “If you really want to take your beers to the next level, you need to do this…” If you’re like me, you lap that up, digest it, and see how you might incorporate whatever process/technique they’re talking about into your brewing. I’m not personally vouching for or debating the value of fermentation temperature control, but I introduce that topic as the starting point of this review. I’ve seen it mentioned multiple times in some of these articles and became a variable I wanted to get better control of. Whether something makes a notable difference or not in every batch I brew, my approach is to eliminate as many of the variables out there that can ruin a beer and on the whole it should allow my process to become more repeatable.

Note: If you are using this on a Stainless Steel Disconnect you will need to use a Nylon Flare washer please see the add on for this.
