Hands on Review: NukaTap Forward Sealing Beer Faucets

This review is by Homebrew Finds Contributor Brad Probert.  Brad is an engineer, expert homebrewer and experienced reviewer.  Grab a link to Brad’s website at the end of this review.

Updated: October 24, 2024

NukaTap Beer Faucet

There are several different beer faucets to choose from when equipping your keezer. The most basic type differentiation is forward sealing versus rear sealing. The rear sealing are the most common type you will find in bars, with a sliding piston visible that comes out through the front of the faucet. Those faucets don’t do well unless you have a continuous flow of beer like is found in a bar. Don’t fool yourself into thinking you pour a lot of beer so the rearward sealing faucets will be fine. They’ll gum up and stick and you’ll be cursing that decision! So the popular homebrew faucets are forward sealing.

The long-time favorite forward sealing faucet for homebrewers was the Perlick brand, but they were expensive. Kegland introduced Intertap – Hands on Review – with a design variation of the forward sealing faucet and a more affordable price. Now Kegland has improved on their Intertap design with the new Nukatap faucet. As everything I’ve tried/researched from Kegland, they take a product and then engineer specific improvements to it- either to make it available at a lower cost or for specific improved homebrew functions.

With the Nukatap, Kegland focused on improving/reducing the propensity of beer to foam while being poured. Beer foaming is simply the act of dissolved CO2 coming out of the beer and then converting to gas at the surface of your beer. Cold beer can hold more CO2 than warm beer, so as carbonated beer warms, it causes CO2 to come out of solution and thus create foam. Similarly, beer under pressure can hold more CO2 than beer that is not under pressure. So as beer goes from the pressurized keg and into your unpressurized glass, this also causes CO2 to come out of solution and create foam.

Nukatap on Left, Intertap on RightNukatap on Right, Perlick on Left

The first design action Kegland did for Nukatap was on the sealing mechanism. One big challenge at fighting beer foam is how to get the beer around the sealing mechanism inside the faucet. Perlick faucets use a ball to seal and shut off the flow. As beer passes by the ball, the flow creates a low pressure zone on the backside of the ball, and thus beer goes from high pressure to low inside the faucet, creating an opportunity to foam. Intertap faucets use a football-shaped shuttle inside the faucet. This shape is less prone to the low pressure zone like a sphere has. Nukatap has a variation on the Intertap football shape, and Kegland kept tweaking it to keep the flow calm as it passed around the sealing shuttle inside. The shape ended up looking like an old-school atom bomb, and hence the “Nuke tap” name was born.

NukaTap Faucets come in three variations. Stainless, Stealth (Matte Black) and Flow Control. All feature stainless steel construction, forward seal design and all the other NukaTap innovations.

I’m also linking to Intertap faucets and accessories where applicable because all Intertap spouts work with NukaTap

Announcing: KegLand Nukatap Gen 2 Flow Control Faucets

NukaTap® Stainless Steel Beer Faucet | Flow Control Gen 2 | Forward Sealing

NukaTap® Stainless Steel Beer Faucet | Flow Control Gen 2 | Forward Sealing

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

  • G2 model features redesigned flow control mechanism for improved shank sealing and flow control
  • Make instant adjustments to beverage flow as you pour
  • Switch from pouring pints to filling growlers without adjusting your CO2 regulator
  • Reduced first pour foam due to low thermal mass
  • Forward-sealing design prevents beer residue from gumming up the faucet
  • Unique shuttle design greatly improves laminar flow, improving the pour of carbonated beverages
  • Compatible with all Intertap faucet accessories and shanks

Generation 2
The NukaTap Flow Control G2 uses a completely new flow control mechanism with better sealing properties against the shank as well as improved flow control.

Control the Flow
The flow control model is a great option for users that often switch between beer styles with different carbonation levels. No need to rebalance your lines or play with your regulator settings. Instantly make adjustments as you pour to dial in the flow rate. This is also a super convenient feature for when you want to grab a quick growler on your way out. By dialing back the flow rate, you can gently fill your growler so CO2 stays in solution and your beer doesn’t pour flat when it comes time to share. The NukaTap Flow Control faucet is also the first FC model to be fully compatible with the optional self-closing spring.

First Pour Foam Reduction
Every kegerator owner knows the letdown of pouring your first pint of the day and getting too much foam. Even with perfectly balanced draft lines, first pour foam is sometimes unavoidable simply due to the temperature of the faucet itself. Running beer through the faucet will drop the temperature, and the foaming will subside, but not without a bit of wasted beer from pouring off excess head. The NukaTap beer faucet drops to beer serving temperature much faster thanks to its lower thermal mass. Simply put, the bulkier the faucet is, the more beer is needed to flow through and chill the tap. The NukaTap is over 20% lighter than its Intertap predecessor, and even lighter still compared to other brands of faucets.

Improved Laminar Flow
The inspiration for the NukaTap name comes from its uniquely designed “nuke-shaped” shuttle that resides on the inside of the faucet. The NukaShuttle went through numerous rounds of redesigns and countless hours of testing to find a shape that provides superior laminar flow. This means that liquid passes by the shuttle with very little resistance, allowing highly carbonated beers or hard seltzers to pour like a dream.

Sanitary Design
The NukaShuttle is the world’s first seamless single-piece design. Traditional taps feature an o-ring seated on a stainless steel shuttle, which can cause a couple of issues. After many pours, the stainless shuttle rubbing against the internal body of the faucet will create small fissures that become potential infection sites, and the seated o-ring can be difficult to clean in place, making your draft cleaning and sanitizing process less effective than you realize. The NukaShuttle is an advanced TPV rubber matrix that has been seamlessly formed over a durable PP skeleton. This single-piece design eliminates the pitfalls of older manufacturing methods, making it one of the most sanitary faucets on the market.

Forward Sealing vs. Rear Sealing
From tap rooms to home bars, forward-sealing faucets are the ideal choice for any draft setup. In traditional rear-sealing taps, beer will drain out of the entire faucet when it’s in the closed position. This means the internal mechanism is coated in beer, which then dries and becomes a sticky residue. Forward-sealing faucets, on the other hand, keep the tap full of beer so it never has a chance to dry and gunk up the internal parts. This makes the faucet much easier to clean and also reduces the chance of off flavors transferring to your beer while you pour.

  • Made from stainless steel
  • Shuttle made from TPV
  • O-rings made from EPDM

Kegland Part Number: KL15523

Flow control faucets feature a built in flow compensator that allows you to adjust the resistance your faucet is exerting.  That means less tubing and potentially less foaming and wasted beer. The compensation feature also makes it easier to serve higher carbonation beers as you can set the faucet to provide resistance to offset the increased pressure needed to store and serve these beers at higher pressures.  Instead of replacing your beer line with ever increasing lengths of tubing, you simply turn a knob to increase resistance.

Hands on Review: Growler Sized Ball Lock Keg by Kegland!

Updated: October 18, 2024

Kegland Ball Lock Growler Keg!

I like growlers. I just like them. I have a lot of different designs ranging from basic glass and PET growlers to featured-filled mini kegs, vacuum insulated models, ceramic growlers and more.

As a growler-enthusiast… I have to say I’ve been waiting this thing to be made. Kegland’s KL20893 is a growler sized ball lock keg.

Because it’s a ball lock keg, it works with most existing ball lock keg parts and accessories.

A look at the top. This has a nice easy to hold strap handle. As you can see it sports a standard size keg lid.  To my knowledge this is the smallest available ball lock keg.A closer look at the handle and lid. This lid (like most ball lock style lids) is equipped with a manual PRV.  Generally speaking… Both Ball Lock and Pin Lock style lids are the same dimension and are interchangeable.  You can use a Ball Lock Lid on a Pin Lock Keg and vice versa.  A big difference are the PRV (pressure relief valve) functions between the two styles.  Both have automatic safety PRV valves.  That is, if the pressure gets too high, both will automatically vent for safety reasons.  The difference is in manual PRV functionality.  Ball Lock Keg lids have a pull ring that allows you to manually vent the keg as you’d like.  You may want to do that for the purpose of removing the keg lid or to vent excess pressure in an attempt to get down to a lower pressure. See: my post comparing ball lock and pin lock kegs – Jump Section on Lids – All that to say… Manual PRV = good.

MoreBeer 2,000 mL Erlenmeyer Flask – $19.99 + Free Ship Eligible, Limited Availability, Matches 2020 Deal

Erlenmeyer Flask - 2000 mL Y430

2,000 mL/2 Liter Borosilicate Flask from MoreBeer for making yeast starters.

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

These Erlenmeyer flasks help the best brewers to make large yeast starters to get their beer fermenting fast. Large populations of active yeast help ensure a healthy fermentation, free of off flavors.  One of our favorite things about the Erlenmeyer flasks is that you can boil your starters directly in them!

Our large 2000ml Erlenmyer Flask is the ideal vessel to make a large yeast starter for 5 gallon lagers and high gravity brews. Because it is made from borosilicate glass you can move it from a boil on your gas stove into a cold water bath for cooling, without the risk of cracking. (We do not recommend the use of an electric element. If this cannot be avoided, we recommend using a larger pot as a hot water bath on the stove.) This means you can do the whole process in one container, keeping it simple and helping to reduce the risk of contamination when transferring from one container to another.

Recommended Process for Use of Flask:
Double Boiler Method

It is important for your safety to heat water in the flask with a heat source that distributes heat evenly. Our manufacturer has confirmed that direct heat to the glass can break down its integrity and break if the heat source doesn’t distribute evenly.

Morebeer! recommends using the “double boiler method.”  This process involves using a boiling water bath on the outside of the flask to heat up the water inside the flask.  All you need is a kettle 3 gallons or larger.  This process is much safer and efficient. If the flask should break or boil over, your kettle will be there to collect the contents, thus keeping your stove clean and keeping you away from potential harm.

Features

  • Massive 2L (2000mL) Capacity
  • Made from Borosilicate Glass
  • Fantastic price for a flask of this size
  • Produced for MoreBeer!
  • 6.5″ base 2.5″ top 10.75″H

Why make a yeast starter? (from our FAQ)
We build starters for 3 main reasons. First, to ensure yeast health. By making a starter 1-3 days in advance, you ensure that your yeast is healthy and strong and ready to do its job. Second, to create more yeast. By making the starter you will increase the cell count of the yeast, giving you a better chance of keeping bacteria’s and wild yeasts from fermenting your wort. Third, if you are making high gravity beers. If you are making a high gravity beer (1.060+) you will need more yeast to start the ferment faster. High gravity beers will also finish more completely when you pitch ample quantities of yeast.

In the lab world, these flasks are known as “Student Grade”. A great flask for making yeast starters!(Student grade is not the highest grade flasks and will have minor defects)

More About Zappa

These hops are far out, man! Named after Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Frank Zappa, this neomexicanus breed was first found in the mountains of New Mexico and later developed by CLS Farms. As wild and free as the music Frank composed, Zappa™ hops are tough to nail down with any singular description. Tropical fruit, pine, and citrus first come to mind, but descriptors such as passionfruit, mint, fresh, purple, savory, impulsive, and fruity pebbles have also been used in an attempt to capture the essence of Zappa™. Use for aroma, whirlpool, and dry hopping additions. Highly recommended for fruit-forward styles like hazy or milkshake IPAs, as well as fruited sours, pale ales, and wild or mixed-fermentation beers.

They are dedicated to making the on-board software just what users want, before they even know they want it. On the horizon is a cloud service that will tie it all together. Their belief that you should integrate their systems with the calculation and recipe software you already use.

Rare, Limited Availability Deal!

Since these were introduced a couple years back I can recall no discounts being offered.

As of this posting MoreBeer has a limited number of Brewtools systems and conicals on sale. These are either refurbished or have cosmetic defects. I have no idea how long these will last my recommendation is to… get them while you can.
