Quickly test the pH of your mash with confidence using our colorpHast pH strips. These strips are high-quality and made not to run, so you are assured an accurate reading each time. Comes in packs of 100 strips.
Accurate, Narrow Range Strips: These are more accurate and easier to read than most pH test strips. Use these to check the pH of your mash and of your finished beer. These offer the same advantages of a pH meter without the cost and maintenance that goes along with a meter.
Why these instead of a pH meter? pH meters have their place. The downside is they require maintenance and continued cost. You have to calibrate, clean and properly store pH probes for accurate readings. I believe this is why pH meter reviews tend to skew negative.
Tip… Cut these in half the long way. You’ve saved 50% and they are still easy to read.

Jamil brews more, consistenly high-quality beer than any hombrewer we know. He won California Homebrewer of the Year in 2002, after winning over 150 total awards at brewing competitions, 55 of them being FirstPlace. Of all the beers that he brews, the Chocolate Hazlenut Porter (CHP, as Jamil says) is the cult favorite and the recipe he is asked-for the most. It also won Best of Show 2002, several First Place ribbons, and countless other awards. It comes complete with 25 ml of Hazlenut extract and 8 oz of chocolate. Jamil recommends using California yeast, WLP001. This kit has a lot of grain in it, so you may find two grain bags useful.

Winemaking Equipment Starter Kit Review
There are many ways for someone to enter a hobby like beer and winemaking. One of the more common avenues is by way of an equipment starter kit. This is how I made my foray into the world of homebrewing in 2009 and in retrospect I am glad for the experience. Buying an off the shelf kit that had nearly everything I needed was a great place to start since I really didn’t know what I was getting into. It helped me avoid the analysis paralysis that would likely have ensued in trying to figure out what I needed, in what quantity, size or quality all on my own. Thankfully, there were experienced minds who put thought and effort into packaging a collection of gear for the nascent homebrewer to be able to focus on the task of making beer. Let the analysis paralysis come later when the brewer decides to advance in the hobby.
An opportunity arose recently for me to start down a new path with winemaking by way of Winemaking Equipment Starter Kit. Since I had fond memories of a similar kit helping me get started in a hobby that became a passion (and near obsession at times), I was excited for the chance.

If there’s been one constant in homebrewing over the years that I’ve been a homebrewer, it’s been… the cobra/picnic tap. 🙂 These things have not changed in years. They’re basic and generally cheap. There have been a few newer options, but the picnic tap itself has received no love.
The box. This is a “hand held” stainless steel faucet. It could also be called a stainless steel picnic faucet or stainless steel cobra faucet. It’s manufactured under MoreBeer’s Torpedo Brand. Of course, Torpedo manufactures kegs – Hands on Review – but Torpedo brand kegs are not a requirement to use this faucet. It faucet works with any homebrew keg. One side of the faucet. It features a 1/4″ OD outlet barb that will work with 1/4″ or 3/16″ ID draft tubing.

The next hot hop? This delicious Pale Ale is based on new experimental hop, HBC438, that has the unofficial name of Ron Mexico due to its native US neomexicanus hop heritage. This hop has enticing aromas of stone and tropical fruit, orange, mint, and herbal characteristics. Vinnie from Russian River Brewing (of Pliny fame) used this hop in an experimental beer brewed for the National Homebrewers Conference and also recently raved about this hop in a talk we attended.
The story of this hop is really unique. Traditionally hop breeders finish the testing of experimental hops internally and then release to the commercial market. Now they are turning the tables and trying something new! HBC 438 is being released EXCLUSIVELY to the Homebrewing community first. Then in the future, as more is grown, they will release it to commercial brewers. So the tables are flipped – Pro brewers will be reading your reviews and seeing what you thought of the hottest new hop.
