Recipe for Wil Wheaton’s VandalEyes PA

Back around 2014. Wil Wheaton of Star Trek The Next Generation fame got into homebrewing. At that time he partnered with Northern Brewer to release two recipe kits. Since Wil has apparently stopped homebrewing as his homebrew website is currently closed. Northern Brewer has also dropped his kits from their lineup. I have both the all grain and extract versions that I can share with you.

Recipe for Northern Brewer 115th Dream Hopbursted Imperial IPA

115th Dream Hopbursted Imperial IPA was a kit that at one time was offered by Northern Brewer. It’s no longer available so here’s the recipe.

I brewed this back in October of 2011 and it was the most hop forward beer I’ve ever brewed and maybe the most hop forward beer I’ve ever had. There are loads of hops in this beer! In fact… 1 lb of hops in a 6 gallon beer. Although nearly all NB kits are 5 gallons, this one was scaled to 6 gallons to compensate for the volume lost to the massive amount of hops.

The recipe relies on a Hopburst Blend that is no longer available. There’s a forum discussion of this back in 2011 and someone sites the Promash analysis that was published listing equal parts Cascade, Crystal, East Kent Goldings and Warrior.

More About 115th Dream Hopbursted IPA:

One pound of hops (yeah, a pound of hops), 9.2% abv, IBUs in the neighborhood of 120, BU:GU ratio of 1.2:1. Hopbursting is a technique that contributes a significant percentage of a beer’s total bitterness through late additions, which as a byproduct creates a psychedelic amount of hop aroma and flavor. This kit uses enough ingredients to brew at least four session beers. If you serve this beer to a Michelob Ultra drinker, he or she will cry. If life were a 1950s horror flick, this I2PA would climb out of the fermenter and turn on its master. Your dentist does not want you to brew or drink this beer. Sorry in advance about your tooth enamel.

Recipe for Northern Brewer Obi Ron’s Wheat Extract Beer Recipe

Obi Ron's Wheat Beer Recipe

Obi Ron’s Wheat Extract Beer Recipe

More About Obi Ron’s Ale from Northern Brewer:

Channeling all the Force of binary suns, this refreshing wheat beer shines with bright flavors and aromas of fresh cut flowers, gentle spicy herbal undertones and a dash of orangey citrus.

When every day feels like a brutal attack on a barren ice planet, the promise of warmer days ahead can seem far, far away. But there always one sure sign of sun and fun ready to greet us with a cheery Hello there — Obi Ron’s Wheat.

Sound like the perfect seasonal brew for spring and summer? Well, yes. But only purists are so precise. Obi Ron’s is more appealing than you could possibly imagine. So this recipe is available year round, making it exactly the brew you’re looking for in every season.

Brewing Notes

  • Style: American Wheat Beer
  • Fermentation Range: 65 – 70F
  • OG: 1.054
  • SRM: 5.5
  • IBUs: 23
  • ABV: 5.4%

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Moderate floral character with slight spice and citrus.
  • Appearance: Somewhat hazy with a radiant orange glow. Firm and lasting bright white foam head.
  • Flavor: Full malt flavor with a prominent wheat character. Medium floral hop flavors with undertones of earthy spice and faint orange.
  • Mouthfeel: Medium body with slight creaminess. Smooth but quickly fading finish.
  • Overall Impression: An easy drinking flavorful wheat beer with pleasing notes of earthy spice, orange-like citrus and floral undertones. Perfect for warm afternoons in the sun.

Brewmaster Brad’s Notes: “Obi Ron’s Wheat is a perfect beer for the spring and summer months, but it goes down just as nicely any time of year. Brewed with nearly 50% white wheat and a dash of light crystal malt, the malt flavors are quite prominent and serve as a perfect backdrop for a modest hop charge. The choice of liquid yeast pairings works wonderfully to accentuate hop flavor with a heightened fermentation derived ester profile, and a small Centennial dry hop step serves to really round out the aroma.”

Recipe for Northern Brewer Ferocious IPA, Surly Furious Clone

Northern Brewer’s Ferocious IPA Recipe is a clone of Surly Furious IPA

About Ferocious IPA from Northern Brewer:

If you can handle a huge hop slap in the face, then pour a pint of our Ferocious IPA. Crafted in honor of a massively popular IPA of the upper Midwest, this brash IPA uses 6 ounces of awesome hops for a bold brew that’s barely balanced by a backdrop of toasty, caramel-y malt. It’s a fizzy yellow beer drinkers worst nightmare, a hophead’s dream, and a smooth full bodied brew so full of flavor you’ll wish you’d have brewed more!

Brewing Notes

  • Style: American IPA
  • Fermentation Range: 65-70F
  • Original Gravity: 1.065
  • SRM: 11
  • IBUs: 75
  • ABV: 6.4%

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Decidedly hop-forward with aromas of earthy pine, floral notes, and undertones of tropical stone fruit and slight citrus. Clean malt aroma with faint toast and caramel.
  • Appearance: Amber color with ruby mahogany highlights with a slight dry-hopped haze. Firm and persistent off white to tan foam head.
  • Flavor: High bitterness with piney, resinous, dark fruit and citrus hop flavors. Slightly toasty yet clean malt profile with low light caramel sweetness and a barely perceptible roast character.
  • Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate creaminess and a soft feel on the palate. No astringency. Low alcohol warmth.

Brad’s Notes:

“Yep, we did it again, another IPA. This time around we present a recipe modeled after a massively popular IPA brewed in the upper Midwest, and this is no ordinary hop bomb one-trick pony. Ferocious IPA is very well balanced between unmistakeable malt richness and undeniable hop presence. The groundwork of highly flavorful base malts provide deep, delicious malt notes of fresh crusty bread, while modest doses of crystal malt and light roasted barley provide this recipe’s complex malt depth and characteristic red-amber color. With a simple early hop addition for bracing bitterness, the end of the boil is where all the magic happens. A combination of Simcoe and Amarillo® hops are employed over the last 15 minutes of the boil to boost flavor with notes of resinous pine, fresh flowers, citrus fruit and a faint tropical fruit subtlety. All of this magic is then capped off with yet more Simcoe and Amarillo® in the dry hop, but also features the special guest Ahtanum to bolster the aroma with wafts of intense grapefruit citrus. Dive into a pint of Ferocious and join us up in the Bold North.”

About Surly Furious from Surly Brewing Co:

The beer that built Surly. Aggressively hopped and citrusy, but with a chewy, caramel backbone.

Surly is called “Surly” due to our inability to find a good beer in town. Furious is one of the first beers we brewed to rectify that situation. The rest is history.

Remember When? 5 Gallon Cornelius Ball Lock Kegs – $9.99!

Pictured: 5 Gallon Ball Lock Keg – Reconditioned – Class 3 from Beverage Elements – I never had a picture of AIH’s $9.99 kegs

Back in June of 2011 we featured a $9.99 ball lock keg offering from Adventures in Homebrewing.

Since then Adventures in Homebrewing has gone the way of Midwest Supplies and Austin Homebrew Supply. It’s become a vanity brand of Northern Brewer. Of course this 2011 deal is no longer available (see current great deals here). But…for good old times here’s a throwback post.

The original post read… “5 Gallon Cornelius Kegs for $9.99!  You may be saying to yourself… “there must be a catch!”  Well you’re very smart because there is a catch.  These tanks have broken handles and no lid.  Still… $9.99 is a good deal considering you get the posts, poppits and tank.”

Free Shipping at Adventures in Homebrewing – Limited Time Sale Matches MoreBeer’s Everyday Deal

homebrewing.org free shipping coupon

Adventures in Homebrewing was a homebrew store located in Taylor, Michigan in the Detroit area. They offered a wide variety of homebrew supplies and gear including some really unique things at reasonable prices. They also had great customer service. This sale included Austin Homebrew Supply which had merged with Adventures in Homebrewing but still operated a location in Austin, TX.

Adventures in Homebrewing along with Midwest Supplies and Austin Homebrew Supply have become vanity brands of Northern Brewer.

For a limited time Adventures in Homebrewing is offering free shipping on some orders of $59 or more. No coupon code required, check AIH for availability.

Recipe for Wil Wheaton’s VandalEyes PA

Back around 2014. Wil Wheaton of Star Trek The Next Generation fame got into homebrewing. At that time he partnered with Northern Brewer to release two recipe kits VandalEyes PA and w00tstout. Since Wil has apparently stopped homebrewing as his homebrew website is currently closed. Northern Brewer has also dropped his kits from their lineup. I have both the all grain and extract versions of VandalEyes PA that I can share with you.

More About VandalEyes PA:

Northern Brewer is ridiculously proud to present VandalEyes PA – the first-ever brew kit dreamed up, brewed up and served up for your homebrewing enjoyment by the epically geeky, celebrity-turned-master-brewer, Wil Wheaton.

VandalEyes PA is the very first homebrew recipe that Wil perfected. And now we’ve crafted a recipe kit that replicates its amazing aroma (thanks to a massive 3oz dryhop), caramel maltiness and the citrusy flavors of Cascade and Centennial hops. Just one sip is guaranteed to give you googly eyes.

But, more importantly, we feel like this kit captures Wil’s own homebrewing mission: “Drinking beer is good, but making beer is GREAT .” Of course, it’s always nice to have a little help from your brew buddies. And now you can count Wil Wheaton as one of them.
So get out your googly eyes, fellow VandalEyesers. And get ready to brew awesome!

Remember When? Kegging System – $89!

The product picture from 2011 featuring AIH’s original logo

Back in March of 2011 we featured this keg setup from Adventures in Homebrewing for the first time. This post got a lot of traction on reddit and homebrewing forums and ended up helping a lot of people find Homebrew Finds.

Since then Adventures in Homebrewing has gone the way of Midwest Supplies and Austin Homebrew Supply. It’s become a vanity brand of Northern Brewer. Of course this 2011 deal is no longer available. But…for good old times here’s a throwback post.

Reconditioned Pin Lock Keg Cornelius (Corny)

Reconditioned Pin Lock Keg Cornelius (Corny) via Northern Brewer

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Pin lock kegs are perfect for kegging your homebrew, cider, or soda, these reconditioned pin lock 5-gallon kegs are used, but have been tested and approved to hold pressure — their most important task. Though the exteriors may have cosmetic damage, we guarantee that they are pressure-capable and we personally pressure test each and every one when it comes through our doors.

Needed, but not included, is a CO2 cylinder, Regulator, and Pin Lock Gas (KX07) and Beverage (KX09) lines.

Looking for a more comprehensive system? See our Draft Brewer® keg systems.

Along with pressure testing each keg, we replace the lid o-rings and outer-post o-rings, if needed. Many of our competitors do not do this, but we want to make absolutely sure you are satisfied — even if it a used keg at a low price! Our technicians have also cleaned each keg with a caustic soda rinse — but even so — the keg may retain a sweet smell similar to a lemon-lime soft drink. The keg exteriors have not had extensive cleaning, so as with most “used” soda kegs we recommend that you thoroughly clean the keg inside (again) and out before using.

A note about o-rings: If you are concerned about the condition of the o-rings you may purchase extra o-rings separately, in case any tear during use.

This amazing price is worth a few dents! Because these kegs are used, many show exterior wear and tear that will not affect the keg performance to hold pressure. Holding pressure is the keg main function, and it will keep your beer tasting fresh and delicious. The affordability of buying “reconditioned” is definitely worth a few scratches and dents.

These kegs are sourced from a variety of vendors and are not customer returns. They may not look new, but they work like new, thus the major discounted price from that of a brand new keg.

22″ Tall x 8.75″ diameter.

Note: Keg Lube can help prevent CO2 leaks and prolong the life of the keg seals.

As of this update Northern Brewer and their vanity brands AIH, Midwest and Austin have used pin locks for $79.99.

They are running a 25% off sale, coupon code below.

Shipping is an extra cost at Northern Brewer. For me it’s $19.02 (that’s going to vary based on location). That figures to $79.01 with shipping.

Or from… $49.99 (shipped) or less

5 Gallon Pin Lock Keg – Dual Handle – Reconditioned

Reconditioned 5 Gallon Pin Lock Keg

Our reconditioned pin lock homebrew keg is the perfect affordable solution for home brewing and beverage making.  Pin locks are the alternative to the more-common ball lock kegs, and they have some unique features and benefits of their own.

First, the “pin” part refers to the method of attaching the disconnects to the keg posts. Pin lock kegs have (not surprisingly) pins on each post – two on the liquid, one on the gas. These pins hold the disconnects very securely, and because there’s two pins on the liquid side and three on the gas, you’ll never confuse one line for the other. Kinda cool.

Second, pin lock kegs are typically shorter than similarly sized ball locks, making them ideal when space is a little tight.

Finally, they’re cheap! These kegs give great bang for the buck without giving up anything in performance.

So go ahead and do something a little different. Grab a classic 5 gallon pin lock keg or three and stand out in the homebrew crowd. (Oh, and they’re also pretty great for cold brew coffee, nitro coffee, soda, Kombucha tea, and whatever else you’re drinkin’)

Reconditioned 5 Gallon Pin Lock Keg Features

  • Durable stainless steel construction
  • Dual rubber handles—colors will vary
  • Reconditioned – cleaned, sanitized, de-labled and pressure-checked prior to shipment
  • We replace the keg O-rings as necessary during testing. We still recommend that you keep a spare set on hand at all times, as O-rings sometimes crack in transit and when you clean the keg.
  • Great for homebrew beer, soda, and Kombucha tea, as well as nitro coffee and cold brew coffee

Keg Specifications

  • Keg body of 304 stainless steel
  • Approved by the NSF
  • 9″ diameter x 22″ height. Keg dimensions may vary slightly from wear.

This is a Class 1 keg. That’s the best condition used keg we offer, but please remember the keg is still used and will have some scratches, dents and signs of wear

Good used pin locks have been hard to find…  When I started brewing pin locks were cheaper than ball locks, but that has changed. There’s been a real reversal in used keg pricing. Used pin locks have been tough to find in stock, especially at anything close to what I would call a good price. For example, see MoreBeer’s Pin Lock Offering. This is supply related. New pin lock kegs are not coming into the homebrewing market and we’ve finally hit an availability wall.

These are selling for just $34.95. That’s an outstanding deal! Shipping (again for me, this will vary) is $15.04. That figures to just $49.99. Shipping for two kegs is just $15.61. That figures to $85.59 or just $42.80 per keg shipped.

A way better alternate deal…

When you purchase 6+ 5lb bags of the same grain MoreBeer will apply a volume discount. You can see this discount on each product page. Here is an example:

Reconditioned 5 Gallon Ball Lock Keg with Dual Handles

5 Gallon Reconditioned Ball Lock Keg – Dual Handle

Our 5 gallon reconditioned ball lock keg, both new and fully reconditioned, are far and away our most popular kegs — and for good reason. Reconditioned kegs are a great way to get the capacity and quality of a true brewer’s keg when you’re just getting started with in-home brewing: you can craft your very own beer, soda, Kombucha tea, cold brew coffee, nitro coffee and more, all at a great, affordable price.

But used kegs are leaky, sticky, and completely beat, right? Not at Beverage Elements. All our used kegs have been reconditioned right here, in house: we clean, sanitize, de-label, and pressure-check each and every one. Even though your reconditioned keg might not be brand new, you’ll never know it. Check out a few of the features and benefits you’ll be getting with this reconditioned ball lock keg.

(Class 1) Keg Features

  • Cleaned, sanitized, de-labeled and pressure-checked
  • Manual pressure relief built into the lid for easy depressurization
  • Durable stainless steel body and dual rubber handles
  • O-rings replaced during pressure check if necessary. Pro Tip: keep a spare set on hand at all times, since O-rings sometimes crack in transit and during keg cleaning
  • True ball lock keg — not converted pin lock
  • Great for homebrew beer, soda, Kombucha tea, nitro coffee, and cold brew coffee

Keg Specifications

  • Keg body of 304 stainless steel
  • Approved by the NSF
  • 8.5″ diameter x 25″ height — dimensions may vary slightly from wear

As of this posting Beverage Elements has these for just $39.95. That’s an outstanding deal! For some pricing clarity, we featured these kegs back in March of 2017. At that time they were MORE. $49.90 each and you had to buy a two pack to get that price.

Recipe for Wil Wheaton’s w00tstout!

I have both the all grain and extract versions of w00tstout that I can share with you.

w00tstout was a collaboration between Wil and Stone Brewing that was also released commercially in 2016.

More About the commercial release of w00tstout from Stone Brewing:

Drew Curtis / Wil Wheaton / Greg Koch Stone Farking Wheaton w00tstout
This barrel-aged palate-saver has been a favorite among our fans—and us—since its inception in 2013. Pecans, wheat, flaked rye and bourbon-soaked barrels provide this whopping, complex superhero version of an imperial stout with a profound complexity that makes it ideal for cellaring—if you can wait that long. Now, we can’t say this beer bestows jedi powers, exactly, but your taste buds may just be fooled into believing as much. A special thanks to Amanda Conner, who illustrated this year’s label to support The Hero Initiative.

More About w00tstout from Northern Brewer:

One part über gravity, three parts über geek, this one-of-a-kind imperial stout from masterminds Wil Wheaton, Greg Koch (Stone Brewing) and Drew Curtis (founder, Fark.com) has been likened to drinking the booze-soaked contents of an old-fashioned candy store.
Deep and complex, w00tstout pours pitch black with a clingy cappuccino head erupting in an oaky, nutty bouquet of caramel and vanilla, roasty dark malt and a hint of bourbon. The curious creation of liquor-laced goodness packs in a whopping 13% ABV, igniting a boozy dance of rich flavors; roast and chocolate, vanilla, dark fruits, subdued molasses, oak and warming alcohol are followed by a tinge of spicy rye in the finish. Velvety carbonation softens the creamy, lingering body to balance a brew as complex as it is creative.

Recipe for Northern Brewer Caribou Slobber Brown Ale – Moose Drool Clone

caribou slobber recipe

Caribou Slobber is one of Northern Brewer’s most popular recipes. It’s a clone of Big Sky Brewing Company’s Moose Drool.

About Moose Drool from Big Sky:

This is the best American Brown Ale in the World! Our American Brown Ale is brewed with four different malts and hop additions consisting of East kent Goldings, Willamette and Liberty. Light on the palate. Rich mahogany color. Subtle coffee and cocoa notes balanced with a pleasant bitterness.

About Caribou Slobber from Northern Brewer:

It’s brown, it’s named after a large North American ungulate, and its name suggests oral incontinence. Ah, we market products with our minds, but we drink beer with our mouths! Which is why this American brown ale is sure to be your new favorite session beer.

Hard to believe so many enticing flavors can come from one beer recipe kit. But brew up a batch of Caribou Slobber and you’ll find dense, drool-worthy layers of malt, caramel, baking chocolate, and a hint of light-roast coffee give way to reveal a hop character that will surprise you if you’re used to drinking English brown ale.

The finish is complex but balanced, and the gravity is not so high as to keep you from having another.

You Pick the Deal… Used Ball Lock Keg for ~$103 or RECONDITIONED Ball Lock Keg for ~$55.17 or LESS Shipped!

5 Gallon Cornelius Keg, Ball Lock (Used)

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Used & Tested, Ball Lock Keg, With Pressure Relief Valve
Used & Pressure Tested – Ball Lock – Includes Pressure Relief Valve Lid

Cleaned and pressure tested 5 gallon, stainless steel, cornelius style tank. These tanks are guaranteed to hold pressure. 25″ tall and 8.5″ diameter. Tanks will show normal wear and tear.

Kegs include the o-rings and poppits that were installed when we received the tanks. We will often change an o-ring or poppit to get the tank to hold pressure. Grab new o-rings and poppits here if you’d like.

If you are just getting into kegging you will need a kegging setup to go with these kegs. We sell keg systems and have a whole lot more kegging options.

We know some homebrewers are more picky than others, so please keep in mind that these are USED kegs. Some of these kegs are probably 30 years old. Do not expect new kegs. If you are looking for new kegs, please check out our new kegs. With this said, they are going to show normal wear and tear. We are not implying that our kegs are not quality…we just want to avoid any misunderstandings.

If you are unhappy with your used 5 Gallon Cornelius Kegs for any reason, we will gladly take them back. The purchaser will be responsible for return shipping charges.

As of this update Northern Brewer and their vanity brand AIH have used ball locks for a whopping $84.99.

Shipping is an extra cost. For me it’s $18.94 (this is going to vary based on where you live). That figures to $103.93.

OR, RECONDITIONED Ball Locks at Beverage Elements for about…. $55.17 (or less) per keg shipped!

This is a Class 1 reconditioned ball lock keg. That’s the best condition of our reconditioned kegs — however, it is still used. It may have some scratches, dents, and other signs of use

As of this posting Beverage Elements has these for just $39.95. That’s an outstanding deal! For some pricing clarity, we featured these kegs back in March of 2017. At that time they were MORE. $49.90 each and you had to buy a two pack to get that price.

Shipping for me (again this is going to vary is) $15.22 that’s just $55.17 shipped!

It’s worth noting that shipping (again for me) is the same for either 1 or 2 kegs! That means the shipped per keg price is just $47.56 when you buy two.

OR An Outstanding Deal at Label Peelers…

The problem is Adventures in Homebrewing is retailing these for between… $64.99 and $31.99. So you’re getting 15% off a retail price that’s pretty easily double what you can find elsewhere.

  • Label Peelers has these same purees start at just $15.11 via a limited time sale.
  • Shipping is an additional cost based on your location.  Because of minimum shipping costs, it may make sense to place a larger order.  Additional items may ship for minimal cost.  Example: Shipping (for me) for 1 lb of Citra is $8.93.  2 lbs cost $9.18 to ship.  That second pound costs just 25 cents to ship.  That’s minimum shipping at work.
  • Check Label Peelers for current selection and availability.
