You can use these to portion out hop additions and other boil additions and for pH and gravity sample containers. These are a great size and don’t take a lot of room since they nest together. What Does Tare Mean? Tare allows you to subtract the weight of the container you’re using to get a true weight of the contents. Add your empty container to the scale and press the tare button. This zeros out the scale. Now add the thing you’re weighing and the scale displays just the weight of the contents of your container. In my opinion the tare function is essential for any good homebrewing scale.

What I like about this scale... I like the high resolution (1/100th gram) given the relatively large capacity (500 grams, about 17.6 ounces, or just over a pound). I like that it has the requisite (in my opinion) tare feature, that it has a stainless top and that it uses easy to source AAA batteries [Search AmazonBasics Batteries]. Given the specs of this scale, it should work for weighing hops, water salts, smaller amounts of specialty grains and other brewing ingredients.

TDS meters can are helpful for brewing if you’re using a RO filter or if you purchase RO (reverse osmosis) water for brewing. If you’re using an RO filter a TDS meter tells you how effective your filter is and can help you know if your filters need to be replaced. From the Hop Research Center in Hüll, Germany, Ariana was developed from a cross breeding of Herkules and an unspecified wild male hop. Although it has a high enough alpha acid content to be used for bittering, Ariana’s oil content makes it an ideal choice for aroma additions and dry hopping. The aroma profile is dominated by sweet, tropical fruit notes of pineapple and passion fruit, along with citrus and berries. A delicious addition to your next Pale Ale, IPA, or Hazy.
