This is a follow up to Kegland’s v1 inline secondary.  The first version was… awesome.  One of my favorite homebrew gadgets of all time.

More about v1

Improvements compared to v1

  • INTEGRATED GAUGE.  v1 did not have a gauge.  This is a huge improvement.
  • DuoTight Compatible!  DuoTight Fittings and Accessories along with EVABarrier Tubing are… awesome.  In my opinion, the system is a game-changer for kegerator owners and builders.

This announcement coincides with the announcement of an updated Blowtie Spunding Valve from Kegland.  See: BlowTie Diaphragm Spunding Valve with Gauge FE962 at MoreBeer

As if this posting, this is eBay offering is selling for $19.99. Shipping is also free to many US addresses.

Announcing: BlowTie Diaphragm Spunding Valve WITH Gauge

BlowTie Diaphragm Spunding Valve with Gauge from MoreBeer

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

The Blow Tie Spunding Valve is used to release excess pressure on a pressurized fermenter or from a receiving keg during pressure transfers. This diaphragm spunding valve is much more accurate than the spring and poppet style, and works much better at lower pressures.

The BlowTie 2 features an integrated pressure gauge so you can quickly and easily dial in your pressure setting. The gauge is removable and can be swapped out with a gauge of a different pressure range.

Pressure Fermentation

Pressure fermentation is becoming more and more popular at the homebrew level, but in order to do it safely and accurately you need a way to release excess pressure. You’ll pressurize your vessel to your desired psi, but once fermentation begins and those hungry, active yeast start creating CO2, the pressure inside the vessel will increase. Attach a spunding valve and set it to your desired pressure, and it will blow off when the pressure gets too high and close up again when it’s back to your desired psi.

Pressure Transfers
Even if you don’t have a pressurizable fermenter, you may have done pressure transfers from keg to keg during filtering or after fining. During pressure transfers, it’s a good idea to have a bit of head pressure in the receiving keg, especially if you’re transferring beer that is already carbonated. Having a spunding valve in place will allow you to consistently control the head pressure and give you more consistent results, without losing carbonation in the process.

Diaphragm vs. Poppet
With the poppet style spunding valve, a spring pushes against a poppet to keep the valve closed. When the poppet lifts up to open, the surface area the gas pushes against becomes larger, and the spring has to work harder to push the poppet down and reseal the valve. This can lead to more gas being released than intended, and the remaining pressure in your vessel may be at a lower psi than your spunding valve’s set psi.

Instead of a poppet, the spring inside the BlowTie pushes against a diaphragm, which has an immensely larger surface area. This means the surface area that the gas pushes against while the diaphragm is closed is significantly closer to the surface area it pushes against when the diaphragm is open. This leads to higher accuracy, and the remaining pressure after excess gas is released will be much closer to your set blow off pressure.

Set Up
The BlowTie spunding valve comes with 8 mm Duotight fittings on the inlet and outlet, and we recommend using it with EVABarrier 8 mm OD tubing (D1717 or D1718). You’ll also need the flare Duotight fitting (DUO106) in order to attach it to a ball lock or pin lock disconnect. Dialing in your desired pressure is even easier with the BlowTie 2, thanks to the integrated pressure gauge. Simply start with the adjustment knob fully closed, then slowly open it until the gauge reading matches your desired pressure setting.

Specifications:

  • Made from food grade acetal
  • Stainless screws
  • Easily disassembles for cleaning
  • 8mm (5/16″) Duotight fittings at both ends
  • Interchangeable pressure gauge
  • Gauge reads from 0-23 psi

WARNING: Do not exceed gauge pressure. Exceeding the pressure range will damage the gauge.

  • DuoTight Fittings and Accessories along with EVABarrier Tubing are… awesome.  In my opinion, the system is a game-changer for kegerator owners and builders.
  • The BlowTie is part of that lineup.
  • This is v2.  The big innovation is that v2 includes and integrated gauge.  Check out my Hands on Review of the v1 BlowTie Valve

Announcing: Kegland Oxygen Flow Meter! – DuoTight and MFL

Oxygen Flow Meter w/ Duotight Fittings FE401

Oxygen Flow Meter w/ Duotight Fittings via MoreBeer

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Take the guesswork out of oxygenation with this handy flow meter. If you’re using pure O2 to oxygenate your wort, you’re likely using a disposable cylinder with a simple brass regulator, and have no way to measure how much oxygen is actually being added. You’re essentially left to finding the “sweet spot” on the dial when you open the regulator and aim for the same spot on the next use. Get repeatable results by adding this flow meter to your setup. This device will allow you to dial in the flow rate and help you add the same amount of oxygen from batch to batch.

The flow meter comes with male flare thread inlet and outlet and includes two Duotight fittings. It’s ready for use with 8 mm OD EVABarrier tubing right out of the box, or you can add a swivel nut and barb for use with other size tubings.

For a good starting point, we recommend using a 0.5 micron diffusion stone and adding pure O2 at a 1L/minute flow rate for 60 seconds to acheive the recommened 10-14 ppm dissolved oxygen.

Features:

  • 1/4″ Male Flare Inlet/Outlet
  • Duotight Fittings for 8 mm OD Tubing Included
  • Scaled for 0.1 to 1.4 L/min Flow Rate
  • 3.6″ H x 0.9″ W

Why a Flow Meter?

Most regulators that homebrewers use for oxygenating wort are simple setups – Example – via William’s Brewing.  They attach to disposable oxygen tanks (typically sourced from a local hardware store) and are little more than on and off valves.  No gauges, no pressure control (other than the degree to which you open and close the valve) and no flow control.

Time and rate give you an idea of how much oxygen you’re really adding to your wort.  Time is easy to track.  Rate, not so much, at least with typical homebrew O2 regulators.  If you want more or less oxygen for your next batch, it’s mostly a guessing game.

Enter a flow meter.  This particular model has a range of 0 to 5 LPM.  This model also appears to have an knob that allows you to adjust the flow rate.  Note: .6 MPa is about 87 PSI.

With both time and flow rate you can establish a more reliable baseline to work off of.  This information should also help you to get better repeatability between brews.

Announcing: Cannular Pro Semi-Auto Bench Top Can Seamer + related hands on review

Cannular Pro Semi-Auto Bench Top Can Seamer

Cannular Pro Semi-Auto Bench Top Can Seamer via MoreBeer

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

The Cannular Pro is a semi-automatic can seamer that is easy to use, reliable, and beautifully simple.

Whether you’re a brewery looking to offer canned beer to go or a homebrewer wanting to keep your creations fresh and fully protected from light, the Cannular is the answer. This bench top unit is one of the most compact and easy to use can seamers you’ll find. The Cannular only requires one person to operate, and each can takes roughly 3 seconds to seam. With a two-person team, one filling and one seaming, the Cannular becomes a suitable option for nano breweries doing small canning production runs.

Cannular Pro vs. Manual Unit
This new Semi-Auto Pro model will guarantee you get a consistent seaming process every time. Unlike the less expensive manual can seamer, this machine has no lever for the seaming operation, meaning it’s even easier for the operator to seam the can consistently and will not vary on how hard the operator is pulling the lever.

Another major difference is that the Cannular’s Pro table spacer is specially designed to work with both 500ml (16.9 oz) and 330ml (11.2 oz) Can Fresh Aluminum Cans right out of the box. Unlike the manual model that requires a secondary table spacer for use with 330ml cans, the Pro model features an adjustable platform, allowing you to raise or lower the table spacer depending on what size can you’re seaming. We have tested standard 202 cans and have been able to achieve good seals with proper adjustments. It is necessary to adjust the table height to ensure you have the appropriate amount of pressure applied when the can lift is raised.

Operation:
The beauty of the Cannular lies in how truly simple it is to operate, and the semi-automatic pro model makes canning beer even easier. With only three points of operation, it only takes a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the machine. The seaming process is as follows:

  • Place lid atop the can and place the can on the table spacer
  • Turn the platform lever clockwise to raise the can to the seamer
  • Press the seaming operation button then wait for the can to stop spinning
  • Turn the platform lever counterclockwise to lower the can
  • That’s all there is to it!

Construction:
The Cannular was designed to be compact, durable, and safe to operate in a wet environment. The platform assembly is made from 304 grade stainless steel, so no matter how messy your canning gets, there’s no need to worry about rusting or degradation. The body of the unit is made from hammered sheet metal and fastened together with stainless steel screws. Rubber feet help keep the unit from slipping and sliding while in use. In addition, the Cannular features built-in brackets near the feet so you have the option to mount the machine to your counter or benchtop. The Cannular runs off of 24V DC power via the Anderson socket located on the back. This lower voltage was chosen specifically to make the unit as safe to use in a wet environment as possible.

Power:
As noted above, the Cannular comes with a 24V DC Anderson socket located on the back of the unit. It does not, however, include a cord and plug. When purchasing the unit, you have the option of pairing it with either a power supply with 110V plug (CAN101), or with a 6 ft. long cord with Anderson plug and alligator clips (CAN102). The power supply is straight forward, and allows you to plug the unit into a standard 110V power socket. The alligator clips give you the option to power the unit from a battery, and can even be used with an 18V cordless power drill battery. This is certainly the most affordable option for powering the Cannular, and we’ve found that upwards of 200 cans can be seamed on a single battery charge.

Why Cans?
So why can when you can bottle? There’s no doubt that canning has become a more and more popular format for packaging beer among craft breweries over the last several years, and with good reason. Aluminum cans aren’t just more environmentally friendly than bottles, since cans require less energy to transport and recycle, they’re also much better at protecting the quality of the beer. Whereas bottles allow in light, which leads to skunking, aluminum cans offer 100% protection from UV and other wavelengths of light that are harmful to beer. There’s still great debate surrounding whether cans or bottles are better at keeping beer fresh, but if done correctly, cans are theoretically the superior option. When a crown cap is crimped onto a bottle, the lining of the cap can form an imperfect seal on the bottle, allowing small amounts of oxygen in, as well as small amounts of CO2 out. Over time this can result in oxidation of the beer and lost carbonation. Seamed cans, on the other hand, form a much better seal that can prevent these issues. Of course, it’s important to make sure that the can is purged of oxygen before being filled, and that the can lid is sealed atop foam to eliminate oxygen from the headspace. Aside from all the “sciency stuff”, cans are just plain safer. Take your beer backpacking, camping, or poolside and rest assured that broken glass won’t ruin your day!

Specifications:
Power: 250W 24V DC
Rated Speed: 3300 RPM
Gearbox Ratio: 9.8 : 1
Dimensions: 16″ L x 9.5″ W x 21″ H
Weight: 40 lbs
Splash guard not included
Please note the pictured splash guard is not included with the seamer. Please see CAN106 to add the splash guard to your order.

Please note: When you receive your cannular the rollers have been set and tested at the factory. They should not need adjustment for 100,000 cans. The table, however, comes unadjusted and getting it set up correctly is very important to getting a proper seal. Cannular’s test show that a .4mm (.015″) actual overlap is all that is needed to seal to 90 PSI. The proper table tension takes a little practice and expect to waste a few cans getting it dialed in. Once you learn the proper tension re-adjusting it is very quick and easy. You want the tension to be tight but not so tight as to dent the can. Use cans at your fill height with water for proper tension adjustment.

Foam on Beer Detectors, or FOBs, are commonly used in commercial draft systems as a way to eliminate product waste and increase profits. When a keg completely empties and foam passes into the FOB it will shut off flow and in doing so keep the draft line completely full of beer until a new keg is tapped. This means you can hook a fresh keg and continue pouring without foaming issues, preventing you from wasting beer that is otherwise needed to refill the line and purge the system.

The FOB can also be used in homebrewing applications as a convenient way to purge kegs of oxygen. Check out video below where our friend Kee repurposes the FOB to move sanitizer from one keg to another and purge the keg of oxygen in the process.

Comes with 3/8″ Duotight compatible barbs at the inlet and outlet, allowing you to easily hook up EVABarrier tubing with either a 9.5 mm joiner or 9.5 mm to 8 mm reducer (DUO113 / DUO105). If not using EVABarrier, simply clamp the line directly onto the barb.

Setup and Use:

  • Attach beverage line from outlet of keg coupler to straight inlet of FOB.
  • Attach beverage line from elbow outlet of FOB to faucet shank.
  • Connect fresh keg and push down purge button until the chamber fills with beer.
  • Push bottom knob in to lift float then pull out for normal operation.

Announcing: Sabro™ Brand HBC 438 Pellet Hops

Enigma™ Hops (Pellets)

Sabro™ Brand HBC 438

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

For many years Sabro™ brand HBC 438 has been unofficially referred to as Ron Mexico due to its native US neomexicanus hop heritage, and was once one of the more difficult hops to get your hands on. It developed such a huge cult following in the brewing community that you can trace the recent boom in available neomexicanus hop varieties back to HBC 438. Sabro is notable for its complexity of fruity and citrus flavors. It imparts distinct tangerine, coconut, tropical fruit, and stone fruit aromas, with hints of cedar, mint, and cream. Sabro’s pedigree is the result of a unique cross pollination of a female neomexicanus hop. With a robust brewing performance, Sabro proves to be a strongly expressive hop that translates its flavor incredibly well into beer.

Vinnie of Russian River Brewing once used this hop in an experimental beer brewed for the National Homebrewers Conference, which was an absolute hit. We recently toured Russian River’s new Windsor brewery with Vinnie, and he still raves about this hop and will happily talk about the origin of the Ron Mexico alias with a Cheshire grin on his face. We think you’ll absolutely love this hop for brewing juicy, tropical pale ales and IPAs!

Lotus™ is the latest experimental hop variety developed under the Hopsteiner breeding program to now be available to homebrewers. This tenacious hop outperformed thousands of brothers and sisters born of the initial cross breeding and survived a decade long journey to become the hottest addition to Hopsteiner’s unique portfolio of exciting new hop varieties. Lotus™ displays exceptional aromatic characteristics, boasting waves of orange and vanilla followed by notes of candied grape and tropical fruit aromas.

Lotus’s genetic origin stems from Eastern Gold, a Japanese hop variety dating back to the 1930s, followed by a mix of Apollo, Cascade, and a USDA male. The USDA male was bred from an open pollinated seedling of a wild American hop developed at Wye College, England. The cross from the USDA male with Neomexicanus heritage adds an additional layer of complexity and uniqueness to this variety.

Operates at 12VDC. Power is brought onboard via screw terminals to allow for a broader range of PSUs (Not Included). Our power supply unit now comes with the end pre-cut off exposing both wires. If you have your own power supply you will need to cut the end off and attach one wire to 12V IN and one wire to Ground (GND). Check out our third product image for a more detailed look.

Inputs / Outputs

Along with the eight temperature sensor inputs, the BCS-482 provides eight 12VDC discrete inputs. All inputs can trigger controller responses. Sixteen 150mA 12VDC discrete outputs are provided for relay control or can directly drive many electric ball valves on the market. Eight of the outputs can be controlled by PWM, differentially by a temperature input, or under complete PID control. The remaining 10 outputs provide on/off control.

Expansion Options

The BCS-482 was designed with expansion in mind, supporting both internal and external expansion modules. The first expansion module slated for release in Q3 2018, is an internal in-case expansion board that will allow for an additional 8 inputs and 8 outputs. Additional modules on the drawing board include options for 1-wire support and 4-20mA support.

Advanced Data Logging

Data is logged internally in the device, and displayed on your browser, or saved as a text file. The BCS-482 supports internal logging of four signals up to 4k samples each. The user can set the frequency of the samples anywhere from 1 second to 6 hours, resulting in trace lengths anywhere from 1.1 hours to 2.8 years long.

Programmable Processes

A revolutionary State Machine interface allows the user to program with simple and intuitive rules, giving the controller the ability to exhibit extremely complex behavior. The BCS-482 allows up to eight independent processes, each with eight states. Check out the documentation for programming examples.

Open Interface API

The control system from ECC utilizes a simple HTTP GET/POST mechanism to control and monitor the unit. The protocol is completely open and documented, allowing users the ability to develop third-party interfaces. Does your application require a unique GUI, or if would like to have your own data logging/graphing application? Want to link multiple BCS systems together and have them all controlled from a unified interface? The possibilities are endless.

Now Available at Keg Connection… ExChilerator MAXX and Brutus Wort Chillers + HBF Reader Coupon!

ExChilerator MAXX Counterflow Wort Chiller (with Thermometer)

I’m excited to announce that Keg Connection has picked up ExChilerator Chillers.  As of this posting they are carrying both MAXX and Brutus models.

More Info - About the Pictured ExChilerator MAXX

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Made with the serious homebrewer in mind, this counterflow wort chiller is the baddest of the bad (and by bad, we mean good). 25 feet of counterflow awesomeness make up this top-of-the-line chiller that includes a thermometer so you can watch your wort drop over 100 degrees in just a few minutes!

Ice baths can take forever and waste precious time that leaves your wort exposed to outside bacteria, yeast, and other bugs (even with the kettle lid on). This lengthy period can also leave proteins, hop material, and tannins immersed in your wort, which clouds your finished product and can potentially leave fusel alcohol, DMS, and sulfur. Achieving a good cold break is vital for yeast health and beer clarity, because the rapid change in temperature makes these proteins and other undesirables coagulate and flocculate to the bottom of your kettle.

Make the upgrade to the ExChilerator, and watch your boiling or near-boiling wort magically go from 200ºF+ to 80ºF or below in just minutes. You’ll see a rapid increase in clarity and flavor in your homebrew!

* This item is shipped directly from the manufacturer, so please allow a few extra days for processing.

Announcing: JetKeg Keg Backpack from William’s Brewing

JetKeg Keg Backpack

JetKeg Keg Backpack via William’s Brewing

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

The JetKeg is a backpack designed to dispense and keep a keg cold. Ever been to an outdoor event and wanted to serve beer on the go? The JetKeg solves this problem. Keep in mind a full keg is very heavy, and we consider this more of a portable draft system than a back pack. The best use of this unit is to carry it in like a backpack, and then set it up for dispensing. Using a 2½ gallon keg would take a bit of load off, and make this more portable.

This product has been designed with durable buckles, strong nylon straps, waist strap and fully hot tape seamed internal lining that is waterproof so no dripping water all over the floor. This product has been designed to take a 5 gallon ball lock or 5 gallon Sankey commercial keg (pony keg) which are not included. The insulated bag will keep the keg cold for hours especially if you fill the bag with ice. A clear window is provided if you would like to stick print out a graphics sheet and insert it for brand or club identity.

The JetKeg includes the back pack, as well as a Duotight beer gun, EvaBarrier beer hose, and needed Duotight fitting to attach the EvaBarrier hose to the base of the gun. You provide a ball lock or sankey keg, couplers or ball lock fittings, and a Micro or Mini Regulator with gas line and fittings. It does come with a beer line neoprene insulating sleeve, although we have found it of questionable value, as you have to cut it in at least 3 pieces to get it to fit over the EvaBarrier beer line.

If you want

a ball lock package with everything you need, see our item B77, JetKeg Dispensing Kit

Note: Pictured regulator and gas hose not included.

Shipping is free or reasonably priced flat rate to addresses in the contiguous US depending on your order size for most items.

Announcing: Tapcooler Counter Pressure Bottle Filler for Forward Sealing Faucets! + Hands on Review

TAPCOOLER COUNTER PRESSURE BOTTLE FILLER FOR FORWARD SEALING FAUCETS

Tapcooler Counter Pressure Bottle Filler for Forward Sealing Faucets via Great Fermentations

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

  • The Tapcooler Counter Pressure Bottle Filler is an all-new, easy-to-use bottling device!
  • Allows you to perfectly bottle beer from a forward-sealing beer faucet without CO2 loss.
  • Purge bottles and headspace with CO2 to keep oxygen out, prolonging the life of your beer.
  • Perfect for bottling for competitions, sending bottles home with friends, or to take on the go!
  • Easy to setup and super easy clean.

Exclusive to Great Fermentations, the Tapcooler Counter Pressure Bottle Filler is the #1 way to fill bottles of your homebrew, directly from your kegging system. No more messing with alternate liquid lines or hard to assemble contraptions. Just fit the Tapcooler into any forward sealing faucet (i.e. Perlick, Intertap/Ultratap/Vent-Matic, etc..), hook up a CO2 line, and you’re good to go. Fill bottles for a competition, or just fill a couple take home bottles for your friends. The Tapcooler is quick and easy to use, and will help maintain the flavor, aroma, and carbonation level of your beer so it tastes the same out of the bottle as it would out of the tap.

FEATURES
For starters, a counter pressure bottle filler is better than most bottling solutions, as the bottle is under pressure while the carbonated beer flows in. Because the interior of the bottle is pressurized there is minimal loss of the CO2 in solution.

The Tapcooler solution improves upon the standard counter pressure filler, as it plugs DIRECTLY into your draft system faucet (tap). Most solutions require you to hook up a separate liquid line, which is not something standard draft systems have setup and requires additional prep (i.e. more time). With the Tapcooler, you can have it setup and ready to go in less than a minute! The Tapcooler design is also advantageous because after you are done filling the bottle, it stays in place hooked up to your faucet vs. other fillers require you to set aside and pick back up again for the next bottle.

Connecting your CO2 line is also a snap. You can either hook up directly with a 3/16 in. push-fit line, or connect your line to the included barb fitting. Optionally, you can purchase the gas ball lock adapter (item #GF884) which gives you the ability to attach a gas (grey) disconnect directly to the filler unit. This optional accessory is a MUST HAVE in our book!

With the Tapcooler design, your beer AND CO2 are filled from the bottom of the bottle through the telescoping bottle connection tube. First CO2 flows down into the bottom of the bottle to flush from the bottom up. Next you open the tap and beer flows down the same tube, filling from the bottom up. The result is a more effective purging of oxygen and little to no foam during the filling process

The telescoping bottle connection tube allows you to fill bottles as small as 4.5 in. tall up to 12.5 in. You can fill taller bottles with the Tapcooler, but the tube will not reach the bottom of the bottle which can lead to some splashing. When filling large mouth containers, a bottle stopper of suitable size and with a 9 mm hole may be used.

The filler features a push button CO2 purge valve which allows you to purge the bottle of oxygen before & after filling. It also includes an adjustable pressure relief valve, giving you the ability to change the filling speed. The pressure relief valve also acts as an overflow port for excess beer/foam to escape when filling.

One of our most favorite features of the Tapcooler, is that is super easy to clean. Cleaning other bottle fillers can be a chore and take lots of time. The Tapcooler comes apart easily and allows you to clean all parts effectively and easily after each use.

All metal parts that come into contact with your beer, are made of stainless steel (SS304). The barb and ball lock CO2 adaptors are made of aluminium.

Lastly, the Tapcooler comes chalk full of optional accessories which will adapt your filler perfectly to your setup. See the related parts section below for list of them!

FORWARD SEALING FAUCET COMPATIBLE
Tapcooler fits Ultratap, Vent-Matic, Perlick 600 series and Intertap faucets. These fillers can be converted to fit Perlick 500 series with optional tap connector (Item #GF891). Cannot be used with ventilated beer taps, i.e. not forward sealing beer taps.

SUMMARY OF AWESOMENESS

  • Hooks up directly to any forward sealing faucet for quick and easy use.
  • Quick setup and easy maintenance.
  • Perfect for bottling for competitions, sending bottles home with friends, or just to have some bottles on the go!
  • A range of accessories are offered for more range and easier use!
  • Purge bottles with CO2 before and after filling for longer lasting beer!
  • Pressure relief valve allows for control over filling speed and allows excess foam to escape for the perfect pour every time!
  • Stainless Steel design
  • Easy to use and clean!

This connects directly to your compatible forward sealing faucet (Ultratap, Vent-Matic, Perlick 600 series and Intertap – Review) and allows you to easily counter fill bottles directly from the tap!
