New via Brewer Dude – UNI-STAT III Temperature Controller

UNI-STAT III

UNI-STAT III via Brewer Dude.  BEST RANKED CONTROLLER AS SCORED BY CRAFT BEER & BREWING Apr/May ’17,

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

UNI-STAT III Temperature Controller Unit (general use sensor included)

Whether controlling a refrigerator, or running a small pump with a cooling coil, for fermentation temperature control; or, for heating with a 120V element or heating pad, you won’t find a more effective or easier-to-use digital controller than this one.  A unique ‘Duty Cycle’ feature provides for optimally smooth temperature control of either cooling or heating modes.  All the basic needs, plus simplicity, in this rugged controller – made in the USA, with a 3-Year factory Warranty!

Some popular applications include: beer-brewing fermentation, RIMS or BIAB regulation, wine-making fermentation control, wine or beer storage, food storage, chocolate storage, laboratory storage or incubation, space heating, freeze protection of plants or exterior water pipes, and many others you may have need for!

UNI-STAT III Details and Application:

  1. This controller in the UNI-STAT series adds to the flexibility and features provided by the UNI-STAT IIa; such as wall mounting, choice of °F or °C, adjustable differential and more.
  2. Wall-mounted installation provides excellent user visibility selection.
  3. Convenient switch-selectable COOL or HEAT operating mode. No programming required.
  4. Unique switch-selectable 50% duty cycle for excellent temperature stability, without unwanted “overshoot” cooling or heating operation. The 50% cycle is 10 minutes ON, then 10 minutes OFF in COOL mode (5 minutes ON, then 5 minutes OFF  in HEAT mode), then repeat, until the desired temperature is achieved and your unit shuts off.  This feature will automatically switch to 100% duty cycle if the 50% choice is not providing sufficient temperature set-point achievement.
  5. Flashing Alarm feature “AL-“ alerts user if sensor temperature is more than 5°F above (COOL mode) or below (HEAT mode) set-point.
  6. Flashing alarm feature “Er-“ will indicate a sensor fault, such as ‘open’ or ‘shorted’, and will automatically shut off system until repair is effected. This is easily accomplished with simple plug-in sensor replacement, or possibly on-site repair of the sensor cable.
  7. Sensor cable length of 8’ enables flexible system set-up for operation monitoring and control.
  8. Unit comes with a replaceable general-purpose sensor, which can also be installed in a standard 1/4″ thermowell.
  9. A bottle-probe style sensor is optional, and extends utility of the control to storage use, such as for wine or beer, in a spare fridge, with 1°F temperature stability (see below).
  10. Microprocessor accuracy provides +/- 1°F control throughout full range of 35 – 220°F (1 – 104°C)
  11. Simple set-point check or adjustment with one finger toggle, after which all system settings will be briefly displayed for confirmation to the user.
  12. Automatic compressor protection is provided in the COOL mode, to prevent possible short-cycling damage.
  13. Operating differential (bandwidth) may be adjusted up to +/- 3°F (up to 6° bandwidth). Factory setting is +/- 1°F.
  14. Load capacity at 120 VAC is up to 13 Amps (1500W for heating).
  15. Designed and manufactured in the USA, and includes a 3-Year Factory Warranty.

Announcing: The Icemaster Glycol Chiller via MoreBeer + Hands on Review!

Icemaster Glycol Chiller

From MoreBeer: “We are very excited to offer the Ice Master G40 Glycol Chiller, it is great unit at an amazing price! The Icemaster is designed to cool fermentations in small vessels. It can be used with any vessel that has a glycol jacket or even a submersed Cooling Snake! For each vessel you want to cool you will need to buy one of our Glycol Pump Kits.”

From the product description: “The Icemaster is designed to cool fermentations in small vessels. It can be used with any vessel that has a glycol jacket or submersed cooling coil/rod. For each vessel you want to cool you will need to buy one of our Glycol Pump Kits. Each tank is able to be separately temperature controlled. Each Glycol Pump Kit includes a submersible pump that is placed in the cool bath of this chiller along with a digital controller. The digital controller includes a thermal probe that should be inserted into a thermal well in your vessel or can be taped to the outside of the vessel if you don’t have a thermal well. The digital controller then measures the temperature of your tank and turns the submersible pump on or off to cool to your desired set temperature. Up to four tanks can be controlled separately with one Icemaster and four Glycol Pump Kits.”

Compatability
The Icemaster can be used with any fermenter that has a built in cooling jacket or a submersed cooling coil. It works well as the cooling source for the following sytems and fermenters.

  • Ss Brewtech Fermenters and Brites with optional FTS Temperature Control Systems: Because FTS systems include a pump and controller you will not need to buy a separate Glycol Pump Kit.
  • Spike Conical with Optional Cooling Package – Because the optional Spike cooling system includes a pump and controller you will not need to buy a separate Glycol Pump Kit.
  • Speidel Tanks with Optional Cooling Jackets – You will need one Glycol Pump Kit for each tank.
  • Grainfather Fermenters – Grainfather fermenters have standard cooling jackets. You will need one Glycol Pump Kit for eash fermenter
  • Blichmann Fermenators with Optional Cooling Coil – You will need one Glycol Pump Kit for each Fermenator.

Keep Reading – As of this posting, this is selling for $699.99.  Check out the product page for complete details, availability and pricing.

Announcing: New Mark II 12 GPM Wort Pump! from William’s Brewing – Twice the Output

MARK II 65 WATT WORT PUMP

Mark II Homebrew Pump from William’s Brewing

from William’s Brewing:
“The 65 Watt MKII Pump from Keg King is a magnetic drive high temperature pump capable of pumping hot wort at temperatures of up to 248° F. It can pump up to 12 gallons per minute, making it perfect for systems too large for the 5 gallon per minute 25 Watt MK11 or the 7 gallon per minute Riptide pump. The maximum height it can pump is 17’ although gallons per minute will be reduced at higher pumping elevations.

The pump head and impeller are constructed of food grade Xarec plastic (very similar to Polysulphone). The magnetic drive acts as a clutch allowing the user to put back pressure on the pump to slow down flow. Like all magnetic drive wort pumps, it is not self priming – you must flood the pump head before turning on the pump. The pump has ¾” BSP male fittings on the inlet and outlet, which are compatible with all ¾” female NPT as well as BSP fittings. The inlet is in the center. Besides Xarec plastic, other wetted interior materials are nitrile and stainless steel.

The magnetic drive ensures no lubricated bearings are in contact with the liquid at all, so you can be sure there is no chance of any contamination of the liquid being pumped. The pump features a 6′ power cord, and a mounting plate for permanent mounting. The pump is 11” in overall length, and 4½” wide including the mounting plate. The pump head can be mounted at any angle on the pump to fit your application (an optional stainless head, William’s item X69, is also available).

Shop around and compare, other wort pumps that do 12 gallons per minute and more start at $379.99!

As of this posting, the pump with polysulfone head is selling for JUST $174.99.  A Stainless Steel upgrade is also available on the product page.  Check William’s Brewing for current price and availability.

William’s Brewing Inline Check Valve – keep things going the right way – Barb for 1/4″ tubing OR DuoTight

In Line Check Valve

Inline Check Valve via William’s Brewing

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

This inline check valve features ¼” Duotight compatible barbs, and releases at 10 PSI. Useful in draft systems that operate at dispensing pressures of 10 PSI or higher. For gas or water lines. Overall length 4¼”

To use this with the Duotight system and 8mm EvaBarrier tubing, you will need two Z84 Duotight reducers (see the above picture).

  • It is possible for beer to flow backwards through CO2 lines.  This check valve helps keep your beer out of those lines and helps to prevent dirty gas lines and QDs and a possible mess.
  • This can be used 1/4″ tubing OR with DuoTight Fittings.  If you’re using the smaller 8mm EVABarrier tubing you’ll need reducers, explained on the product page.
  • DuoTights are awesome.  Check out my extensive hands on review… Hands on Review: Kegland DuoTight Fittings & EVABarrier Tubing!

Announcing: The ThermoWorks Thermapen IR! – Two Professional Instruments In One

ThermoWorks, makers of the nearly universally lauded Thermapen Mk4 (Mark 4) [Review] have announced the new Thermapen IR.  The Thermapen IR combines everything people love about the Mk4 with addition of an Infrared Thermometer.

From ThermoWorks: “The new Thermapen IR combines the unparalleled speed and accuracy of the Thermapen Mk4 with the versatility of a professional infrared unit. Why carry two different thermometers when you can just carry the Thermapen IR?

  • Adjustable emissivity infrared from 0.1 to 1.0
  • Patented auto-rotating display
  • Max/Min infrared displays
  • Foldaway thermocouple probe
  • High accuracy probe to ±0.7°F (±0.4°C)
  • Probe readings in only 2-3 seconds
  • Motion-sensing sleep & wake mode
  • Display temps in °C or °F, 1 or 0.1° resolution
  • Includes NIST-traceable calibration certificate

View both infrared and penetration probe readings from either hand in any position with Thermapen IR’s patented 360° auto-rotating display. In Probe mode, set the unit down, and Sleep Mode saves battery life. Pick it up, and it turns on automatically. Close the probe when you’re done and it powers off for storage. Each unit ships with a NIST-traceable calibration certificate for both the probe and infrared so you know it’s accurate.

Thermapen IR is a must-have, versatile tool for restaurants, health inspectors, manufacturing, laboratory, and more.”

Note from HBF: I have long advocated IR thermometers in select situations.  This unit really combines the best of both worlds.  Since IR no touch, you can check the temp of yeast washing and yeast rehydration water and your starter wort without the risk of infection.  I find mine particularly useful for rehydrating yeast.

As of this post, this is selling for a bit more than the standard Mk4 at $129.  Check the product page for current price and availability.

New: Grouse Malting Co Goldfinch Millet Malt [Gluten Free] – save $4

Goldfinch Millet Malt - 2 LB

A notable percentage of people have some motivation to reduce or completely eliminate gluten intake.  Reasons vary from dietary choice to gluten sensitivity to serious medical conditions including auto-immune diseases like Celiac Disease.  This may describe you or a friend or family member.

More Info

Although commercial gluten free and reduced options are increasing in number, they are still few and far between.  That’s even more true when it comes to gluten free homebrewing supplies.  Only a few homebrew shops carry supplies and those supplies are generally slim.

Enter Gluten Free Home Brewing.  GFHB is a shop dedicated to offering gluten free supplies and brewing resources.  Cross contamination is an issue for those with more serious allergy-like conditions.  GFHB is dedicated gluten free so there is no risk of CC with gluten containing ingredients.

Ingredient offerings include – malted gluten free grains… malted millet (pale, CaraMillet, crystal millet, medium, chocolate, dark roasted), buckwheat malt from Grouse Malting Company and Eckert Malting’s malted rice – crystal, amber, James’ brown, dark, gas hog, biscuit – and more.  Along with ready made recipe kits (both extract and all grain) hops, yeast and more.

Gluten Free Home Brewing also offers how-tos, tutorials on GF Brewing along with a recipe sharing platform.

New from GFHB – Goldfinch Millet Malt – “Maple and bran flavors coupled with slight toasty cereal, honey and caramel tones. Perfect addition to Pale and IPA grain bills.”  This malt is featured in Ghostfish Brewing Company‘s Goldfinch IPA.

New from MoreBeer: Cloudburst Brewing Flashing Lights IPA Clone Kits

Cloudburst Brewing Flashing Lights IPA

MoreBeer has released recipe kits for Cloudburst Brewing’s Flashing Lights IPA.  Recipes are available in both all grain and extract versions.  These recipes are the result of a direct collaboration with Cloudburst Brewing

from MoreBeer: “Flashing Lights is a delicious IPA that is bittered with Chinook and heavily dosed with Citra, Mosaic and Cascade. Beautifully aromatic and very easy drinking, this is a definite crowd pleaser! Flashing Lights is one of the many innovative rotating beers brewed by Cloudburst Brewing.

Cloudburst Brewing in Seattle Washington is one of our favorite craft breweries. We met Steve Luke (owner and head brewer) up at the Yakima Fresh Hop Ale Festival and were thoroughly impressed with his beer. After tasting every beer at the festival, there was no question that the Cloudburst Wet Hop IPA was best in show.

Steve, being an ex-homebrewer, was happy to help MoreBeer! with one of his famous IPAs. If you are not familiar with the amazing Cloudburst IPAs he makes, you might be familiar with another IPA of his, Elysian Space Dust. Cloudburst brews up a constantly rotating selection of flavorful and unique brews. Stop by the tasting room the next time you are in Seattle; until then, you’ll just have to brew up some Flashing Lights!”

From William’s Brewing: “The best deal we have ever found in a highly efficient counterflow chiller! This pure copper pipe unit features 3/8” hose barbs for both wort and chilling water, and is an extremely efficient chiller, capable of chilling 5 gallon batches in one pass, as long as your cooling water is 60° F. or less. Easier to clean than a plate chiller, and much more efficient than an immersion chiller. This can be pump or gravity fed.

Connection tubing and fittings are not included: use 3/8” inner diameter vinyl (our item E04, sold per foot) for the cooling water and 3/8” inner diameter silicone tubing (our item J46) for the wort inlets and outlets. As this is a counterflow chiller, be sure to connect the cooling water inlet to the same end as the cooled wort outlet.  9¾” diameter, 10” tall.” [keep reading]

Introducing: Mini Flex Compact Modular Regulators

Mini Flex Regulators

Keg Connection has introduced the Mini Flex Compact Modular Regulator.  This is similar to some of the compact regulators we’ve seen in the pack, but a lot more flexibility.  You can use this with a standard CGA320 type tank, 74g cartridges or 16 gram cartridges.

We’ve covered mini regulators on HBF in the past. The general benefits uses are…

  • Portable Serving: As an on-the-go regulator.
  • Backup – I’m out of CO2 and I want to pour a beer! Use as a backup if your main CO2 tank runs out.  Swap out the CO2 line for this regulator and you’ve got a temporary solution to keep you up and going until you can get more CO2.
  • Serve Beers at Alternate Carbonation Levels: This regulator goes up to 30 PSI.  That’s plenty to serve high carbonation beers like Hefeweizens and Belgians.  If you don’t have a dual or triple pressure setup, you could use this regulator to serve beers at higher pressures.  I would not suggest force carbonation with this unit.  The 74g cartridges would be pricey. You could carbonate using your existing regulator or just as easily naturally carbonate with priming sugar.  After the beer is completely carbonated, use this to serve at the higher pressure.

The flexibility offered by the Mini Flex takes the concept to another level.

Mini Flex Compact Regulator at Keg Connection

The Mini Flex is priced at $59.95.  Additional Add Ons are available including CO2 cartridges, taps and more.  It ships as part of Keg Connections Flat Rate Shipping program.  That means you can get this and one of these stellar keg deals and pay one flat shipping fee…

New from Blichmann Engineering – Inline Oxygenation Kit

MoreBeer has picked up Blichmann’s Inline Oxygenation Kit

from Blichmann Engineering: The In-Line Oxygenation Kit designed by Blichmann Engineering™ sets your brew day up for success.  The stainless steel diffusion stone dissolves oxygen into your wort to promote yeast health and vigorous fermentation. It also reduces lag times to produce the finest homebrewed beer without off-flavors from stressed yeast.  Unlike other products on the market, this product quickly and completely disassembles for cleaning and sanitation.  We have also selected a stone porosity that is the perfect balance between small bubble size for quickly dissolving the oxygen, yet has the permeability for sanitizers to fully and quickly penetrate the stone for proper sanitation.  Other manufacturers use stones so fine that sanitizers cannot penetrate them and they must be boiled to be properly sanitized.  But not ours!  Your success is our priority when it comes to brewing!

Features;

  • Stainless Steel diffusion stone
  • Two 1/2″ QuickConnectors™
  • High quality O2 regulator
  • Custom stainless fitting
  • 5 ft. length 02 hose
  • Super easy to sanitize
  • Requires “propane-type” oxygen tank
