New from MoreBeer: North Coast Brewing Co Old Rasputin Clone Kits

9_1477346406

MoreBeer has released Old Bearded Stout, available in both all grain and extract versions.  It’s their take on North Coast Brewing Company’s Old Rasputin.

from MoreBeer…

Wow. If you’ve never tried the North Coast Brewing Co. Old Rasputin, then you need to brew our clone version of it. If you have tried the North Coast Brewing Co. Old Rasputin, then you know what we’re talking about, and need to brew our clone version of it!

This imperial stout is one of our most complex recipe kits. Not only because of the ingredients involved (12 pounds of base malt, 5 specialty malts, and 3 different hops!), but because of the mouthfeel, flavors, and aromas it provides. The all grain kit even includes 2 pounds of dry malt extract because the amount of malt simply won’t fit in your average size mash tun!

This is also one of those beers that continues to improve the longer it’s allowed to age. Our Old Bearded Stout is bold, boasting an incredible roasty, bready flavors, and aromas of chocolate and coffee. Coming in at right around 8.5%, this is a great beer to “just have one” of, but we won’t blame you if you go for a second!

Estimated Original Gravity:1.082-87
SRM (Color Range: 30
IBU’s: 78-82 Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 8.4-8.6%

New: Superfood Yeast Nutrient at Brew Hardware

Superfood75-2

Brew Hardware has picked up BSG’s Superfood Yeast Nutrient.

About Superfood:”Superfood® is the most effective complex yeast nutrient in the winery or cidery. It provides the supplements yeasts need for growth and survival during the anaerobic stress of fermentation, in doses that are most advantageous.

Superfood® contains primary-grown, fully-autolyzed yeast extract and yeast hulls, along with vitamins, complex minerals, and a variety of nitrogen sources. This is much more beneficial to yeast than simple DAP additions, and encourages better performance than other blends.

Usage: 1.5 to 2.5 gm/gal of must. Mix 1/3 directly into must when adding yeast + 1/3 at start of fermentation + 1/3 when fermentation is 50% complete.”

Shipping is a Flat $7.99 with a $150 order or free with a $299 order.  Check out recently featured Brew Hardware Finds.

Other recipes are out there include Northern Brewer’s Plinian Legacy attempt at cloning this beer.  I’ve tried that recipe and it makes a great beer, although I know of no other homebrew recipe that claims direct collaboration with Vinny like MoreBeer’s does.  MoreBeer’s Pliny the Elder Kit is one of the best beers that has ever come out of my homebrewery.  I can highly recommend it to you.

Modern Homebrew Recipes by Gordon Strong

Modern Homebrew Recipes: Exploring Styles and Contemporary Techniques

Modern Homebrew Recipes: Exploring Styles and Contemporary Techniques by Gordon Strong

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Three-time Ninkasi Award winner, Gordon Strong has been a towering presence in the homebrewing community for many years. Now this Grandmaster Beer Judge invites you on a guided tour through over 100 of his own as-brewed recipes. While discussing the fundamentals of homebrewing, the author also invites you to develop your own style, with tips on recipe formulation and ingredients substitutions.

In the initial chapters, Strong cover the basics of brewing, summarizing a variety of processes relating to water adjustment, mashing, and hopping. The author concisely and clearly lays out techniques like infusion mashing, step infusion, decoction, cereal mashes, and hybrid mash schedules. Get the rundown on adding hops in the boil, first wort hopping, hop bursting, whirlpool and steeping, hopbacks, and dry hopping. Learn the basics of recipe design and how to think about style recipe profiles; know the intensity of your ingredients and what contributes to a balanced recipe and how that might differ between styles―do you know what makes a balanced IPA versus a lambic? Make intelligent substitutions with ingredients you have and become comfortable scaling recipes, accounting for volume losses, mash efficiencies, and differences in hop utilization.

The recipes themselves are tried and tested, provided by the author as he has brewed them, including specific advice and sensory profiles, plus insights into the creative process behind each recipe. There are myriad IPAs and everyday styles for easy drinking, such as pale ale, blonde ale, wheat beer, altbier, Kolsch, and brown and amber ales. Classic and modern lager recipes include Vienna, dunkel, Maibock, Oktoberfest, bock, and schwarzbier. Dark beers are plentiful, with dark milds, porters, and stouts, making a nod to both American and classic English versions. Stronger fare is on offer with barleywine, strong ales, and winter warmers; lovers of Belgian beer will also find an eclectic selection of traditional recipes, as well as some saisons and biere de garde. For when the creative juices are really flowing, the author includes a collection of experimental and historical recipes that may not find a place in any set style―pale mild or dubbel American brown ale, anyone?―but are delicious nonetheless.
