Adding a Tri-clamp Fitting to a Homebrew Keg Lid

Editors Note: This is an advanced project that requires additional tools, skill and materials. This post outlines the process that Kris took to modify his keg lid with a weldless tri-clamp bulkhead. Product specifications can change over time, double check to make sure that current specifications match your needs.

Adding a Tri-clamp Fitting to a Homebrew Keg Lid

Carboys, conicals, buckets, kegs, etc. There is an ever-growing number of options for fermentation vessels. I recently moved away from carboys to experiment with pressurized fermentation. I didn’t feel like buying anything new, so why not repurpose a corny keg for fermentation? This past year I “right-sized” my batches down to 2.5-3 gallons making a corny the perfect size for fermenting. With a couple modifications (shortened dip tube, hop screen, etc), I had an old 5 gallon corny now as a dedicated fermenter. An added bonus was that it fit perfectly in my temp-controlled chest freezer.

I started seeing some other homebrew fermenters with tri-clamp connections on top. Blogs all around showed them used with blowoff tubes, thermowells, carbonation stones, CIP spray balls, etc. It seemed like a great universal connection with a ton of uses. Most importantly to me, I wanted the tri-clamp connection to build an oxygen-free dry hop dropper (that build is an article for another day).

Read on to see my trials and tribulations while adding a TC bulkhead to my corny lid.
Build note: This is a weldless build. If you’ve got the ability/skill/tools to weld stainless, go for it!

Install a Priming and Purging Port for Easy Homebrew Pump Operation

I use my March Pump to recirculate/vorlauf, transfer wort to my brew kettle, chill with a recirculating immersion chiller and transfer to my fermenter. It works great, helps me chill down very quickly and overall, it shaves a significant amount of time off my brew day.

One of the questions that arises on these type of carb caps, is… does it work with both liquid and gas posts? Some models are universal fit and some work only with gas posts. For draft line cleaning projects to work well, at least in my opinion, the carb cap that’s used needs to be universal. I’m happy to report that the one I received did indeed work with both liquid and ball lock posts. Check product description for current specs.

Making a Utility CO2 Line Using Luer Lock Disconnects

What are Luer Lock Disconnects?

Luer Locks are a generally inexpensive and effective disconnect system. I think these are typically used in the healthcare industry, Luer Locks provide a solid, pressure capable connection with a quick twist.

Valved/Quick Disconnects vs Disconnects

Luer Lock connectors are not what I would call “quick disconnects” meaning that they are not valved to allow easy disengagement while pressure is turned on. You need to turn off CO2 pressure to disengage these.

Tip: If you’re using these for kegs, disconnect the ball lock gas QD before you disconnect your Luer Lock. This will prevent the keg from emptying itself of CO2.

A Hybrid Approach

Of course you could use all valved QDS or all Luer Locks in your kegerator setup. I use a hybrid approach.

Valved QDs for most of my keg lines and Luer Locks to operate a “utility” CO2 line. One of my CO2 lines has a female Luer Lock on it. I have a selection of attachments that consist of: The attachment, 5 inches or so of CO2 line and a male Luer Lock.

With this setup I can easily swap out more specialized attachments that I don’t typically need to be hooked up all the time. Since Luer Locks are generally cheap, this setup saves a good bit of money vs and entirely valved QD approach.

In my opinion the original ITC-308 was and is a game changer as far as homebrew temp controllers. In comparison to available controllers available at the time the ITC-308 was released, it offered loads more features, including dual stage control, for a fraction of the price. Game changer! Applications:

PET Bottles as Growlers: These are generally intended to convert 1L and 2L bottles to growlers. Fill up a 1L or 2L PET bottle with your favorite homebrew. Put one of these on (purge the headspace by squeezing if you want to) and then pressurize for transport. This should help to reduce oxygen pickup and maintain carbonation levels.
Fine tune or rapidly carbonate beer: You can also use this cap to rapidly carbonate beer. Same process as for transport, just set your regulator to the proper pressure and shake or agitate the PET bottle to help introduce CO2. Or hook it up to CO2 and let it sit in you kegerator.

Waveshare makes a 2.7″ e-paper display that… requires no power. This is the same sort of technology that some versions of Amazon Kindle use. A small amount of power is used to “paint” the screen and then it stays that way with no power. In the case of the Waveshare display the energy that’s generated by the setting device (a compatible smart phone) is enough to to power the process of setting the display.

Note that fittings sizes are different on this pump vs the one I use in that build.
