Hands on Review Blichmann Engineering Riptide Pump

In the world of hot wort pumps for homebrewing, there are a couple of big name players that have dominated the market for some time. There are also some new entries in this segment that offer just as good function, but at a much lower price. Blichmann came in with a completely different strategy. Rather than trying to do the same thing better, or the same thing for less money, they wanted to re-write expectations for what a homebrew pump should do. It’s like the first time you saw a BBQ grill that had lights to cook at night and a built-in bottle opener. You told yourself, “Wow, I didn’t know you could get one like that… I want one!”

As with anything Blichmann makes, the Riptide follows suit with top-notch quality and looks, and a price tag to remind you that you’re buying top of the line. In the case of this pump, they legitimately bring features that no other pump on the market has and at a price comparable to the current top of the line wort pumps (that don’t have these features). So it’s arguably reasonably priced.

The History of MoreBeer! & March
Many years ago MoreBeer! worked with March Pumps to release what is now the standard pump in the homebrewing community, their model 809 (our H315) with a polysulfone head and 6′ cord with plug. Thousands and thousands of these pumps have been sold to homebrewers.

The New Design
Now, with a slight design modification, the new model nearly eliminates past cavitation issues (where the impeller spins in an air pocket and no liquid moves). We’ve been testing/using the pump with our BrewSculptures for several years now and are extremely happy with the results, so much so that we are completely replacing the H315 with the high flow model.

Still Works the Same
The new model comes with all the great features of the original – magnetic drive, handles flow restriction, okay for boiling temperatures, 6′ cord with plug, food-grade materials in contact with the liquid, 1/2″ ports, etc. – but now features a different slightly higher flow rate with less issues of cavitation.

The magnetic drive in a March pump acts as a clutch allowing the user to put back pressure on the pump to slow down flow. Since it is magnetic drive, it is not self-priming, you must put the pump below the level of the liquid source. This pump cannot be run dry.

Additional Notes
To restrict flow place a ball valve on the out flow of this pump.
This is the pump we install and use on all of our BrewSculpture brewing systems.
We stock polysulfone replacement heads, H317, in case the threads are damaged.
If you are looking for a pump for a larger home brewery or small nano brewery you can also look at our H325 Nano Brewery pump from March.

KegLand Tri-Clamp Pump w/Stainless Steel Head!

KegLand MKII Magnetic Drive Pump | Tri-Clamp Inline Pump Head | Stainless Steel | 5 GPM | 25 Watt PMP505

KegLand MKII Magnetic Drive Pump | Tri-Clamp Inline Pump Head

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

  • Magnetic drive enables you to slow down the flow without damaging the pump—just add a ball valve to the outlet!
  • T.C. connection allows the pump head to be oriented at any angle in a full 360-degrees
  • Pull ring PRV at the pump outlet makes it easy to purge air and prime the pump before each use
  • Inline flow path for smooth integration into your brewery while keeping your tubing lines tidy
  • Stainless steel head with 1.5″ T.C. ports to attach your preferred tri-clamp fittings

The best-selling MKII Magnetic Drive Pump now available with a major upgrade! This unit comes standard with an inline stainless steel pump head that installs on the pump body with a 3″ tri-clamp. Compared to the standard “center inlet” pump head, the “inline” flow path can make it much easier to integrate into your brewery and keep your brewing hoses tidy. At the outlet of the pump, there is a very handy pull ring PRV that allows you to bleed liquor or wort from the pump head to release trapped air and prime the pump. And with the 3″ T.C. connection, not only do you have a full 360-degrees to orient the pump head any which way, cleaning the pump after use could not be easier—just pop off the tri-clamp, wash out the pump head, and clamp back on.

The MKII is a perfect pump for your system and comes highly recommended for brewers stepping up to all-grain brewing. Rather than schlepping heavy kettles filled with hot liquor or wort around your brewery, or awkwardly stacking them into a 3-tier gravity setup, allow this handy pump to move liquid from vessel to vessel while everything remains in place. The magnetic drive allows you to slow down the flow without damaging the pump. This can be done by attaching a ball valve to the outlet side of the pump, and then you simply open or close the valve to control the flow rate. The pump itself is not self-priming, but priming is super easy thanks to the pull ring PRV which will help ensure the pump head is full of liquid and trapped air is released before powering it on.

Tri-Clamp Pump Head
The T.C. pump head can be removed quickly and easily using the 3″ tri-clamp. This means no drivers or power drills are needed to back out the six Phillips head screws that mount the pump head on the standard version of the MKII. Whip the head off in a flash to clear out spent grain, hop material, or clear a blockage. Attaching the pump head with a tri-clamp also allows the head to be rotated at any angle in a full 360-degrees. This makes it easy to configure the plumbing to your unique brewery setup.

Inline Design
An “inline” pump head simply means the input and output are on a straight horizontal line with one another which can make it easier to integrate into your brewery setup. If you’re using a 3-vessel horizontal system, the inline pump head will make it easier to keep your hoses neat and tidy compared to pumps heads with a center inlet.

PRV Purge Valve
The corny keg style PRV will make priming the pump a breeze. Simply let bleed the pump head to purge air out before turning the pump on and you’ll avoid any cavitation issues. The PRV also acts as a safety so you do not over pressurize your pump head or brewery system.

304 Stainless Steel
The entire pump head is made from 304 grade stainless steel so it’s highly resistant to chemicals, heat, and physical abuse. The 1/2″ BSP threaded ports can be used to attach barbs, quick disconnects, camlocks, tri-clamp adapters, or any other 1/2″ fittings you prefer.

Features:

  • 110V / 60hz
  • Max Head: 11.15 ft. (3.4 m)
  • Max Flow: 5 Gal/min (19L/min)
  • Max Temperature: 248°F (120°C)
  • 360° rotatable stainless steel pump head
  • 1.5″ T.C. ports
  • Water resistant casing (not waterproof)

Last Call$45 Off Chugger X-Dry Series Tri-Clamp Center Inlet Homebrew Pump!

X-Dry Series Tri-Clamp Chugger Pump (Center Inlet) - Stainless Steel H336

X-Dry Series Tri-Clamp Chugger Pump (Center Inlet) via MoreBeer

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Introducing the X-Dry Series Chugger Pumps! These pumps offer the same great quality we’ve come to expect from Chugger, but now feature Run-Dry Protection. Although the Chugger still needs to be primed before each use, the X-Dry Series offers a new level of protection from damage due to cavitation.

The Chugger lineup of pumps represents a great value for an even better price. These pumps are workhorses in the brewery. Featuring a robust flow rate of 7 gpm, and a magnetic drive designed to handle back-pressure, these pumps are a great addition to any brewing setup! The Stainless Steel Chugger showcases their molded Stainless Steel Pump Head. This stainless pump is a steal for the price, and we’ve been more than happy with the quality! Use this to ease transfers between kettles, cool wort via a counterflow chiller, or recirculate icewater for quicker chilling!

The Chugger pump model has 1.5″ tri-clamp inlet and outlet, allowing easy integration with your T.C. kettles or fermenter! We recommend setting these pumps up with a butterfly valve on the outflow side, this way you can throttle down the outgoing flow rate, allowing for more efficient sparges or cooling! The pump head can also be rotated 360° (in 90° intervals) allowing for even more customization!

Features:

Run Dry Carbon Bearing
Stainless Steel Center Inlet Pump Head
Food Grade up to 250° F
1.5″ tri-clamp inlet and outlet
High Flow rate of 7 gpm
Max Head 18.6 ft
115v 55″ cord and plug attached
50/60 Hz, 1.4 amp
1/20 HP, 3500 RPM
Note: When using silicone tubing, we recommend using a slighlty larger barb than the I.D. of the tubing. This is because silicone tubing tends to have greater pliability than most tubing. For example, when using 1/2″ silicone tubing, we recommend our 5/8″ barb (H620), to help ensure a better seal!

I use an on/off foot pedal foot switch (different model, manufacturer and specs) for hands free control of my March Pump while brewing. Other possible applications could be to control a keg washer or draft line cleaning pump.

Always use caution when using your pump with hot liquids.  Likewise use caution when using electricity around liquids.  Hot liquids and electricity can be dangerous.  Always read and follow manufacturer directions.

Hands on Review: Blichmann Engineering Riptide Brewing Pump Upgrade Kit – Upgrade Your March or Chugger Pump

Updated: February 12, 2025

This review is by Homebrew Finds Reader Benji S.  Benji has been brewing for 10 years.  His favorite style is Festbier.  He’s an all grain brewer and member of WIZA (Whidbey Island Zymurgy Association).  Check him out on Instagram at neon_hop

Tell anyone that you spend hours cleaning as part of a hobby, and you’ll probably get a few odd looks. Unfortunately this is our reality as Homebrewers. Planning, prepping, cleaning, and waiting take up large percentages of any given batch. We often chase new ingredients, techniques, equipment, and short cuts in an effort to reduce the time we spend on these areas. Sometimes introducing new equipment into your process can make some parts of these tasks easier, while introducing new steps to others.

Pumps help move around lots of liquid in a short amount of time, reducing the need to lift heavy kettles or pots. They also introduce some additional planning needed for connecting vessels in a loop of hosing and cleaning after use. This has essentially been the summary experience I’ve had with my Chugger X-Dry [Hands on Review]. In the never ending quest for reducing the time and effort needed to use it, I looked at what changes I could make to my setup to make using it even simpler.

Blichmann Engineering is well known for high quality and well designed equipment targeted at Homebrewers. It should be no surprise then that their Riptide pump is a fairly feature packed model compared to others on the market. Particularly their TC clamp attached pump head with built in flow control and priming valve. In recognition of their audience, Blichmann also produces an upgrade kit that offers these same features to anyone with a Chugger or March pump.

Upgrading my Chugger X-Dry with their kit seems like a perfect way to take a good pump and make it even better, hopefully shaving some steps off of the prep and cleaning process in the meantime.

Criteria

My original criteria when looking for a pump were largely satisfied by the Chugger X-Dry, but there were a couple of criteria that were lacking, namely:

  • Head assembly should be fairly easy to take apart to aid in cleaning]
  • Flow control valve for use when sparging
  • Easy and intuitive to prime and get started

As the Riptide conversion kit is meant to solve many of these things, it made a natural candidate for trying out an upgrade to see if I could improve the usability experience. Additionally, my experience with the X-Dry suggested it was fairly easy to get into a state where it was cavitating. My hope was that the purge valve would help alleviate, or solve, this issue.

Beer Pump Battle! See Kegland’s New 65 Watt Pump In Action

KegLand MKII Magnetic Drive Pump | Center Inlet Pump Head | Stainless Steel | 13.5 GPM | 65 Watt from MoreBeer

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

The “Big Brother” to one of our best-selling pumps! Expect the same quality that customers have come to expect from the MKII Pump (PMP500) but with more power. This 65 watt magnetic drive pump is powerful enough for homebrewers and micro brewers alike. Use it to move hot wort in an all-grain system and also to transfer wort from boil kettle to fermenter. The pump head is made from 304 grade stainless steel with 3/4″ threaded ports that can easily be converted to tri-clamp. The magnetic drive allows you to slow down the flow without damaging the pump. This pump is not self-priming so do not run the pump dry. The pump head can be rotated in 60-degree increments, allowing for 6 different pump head orientations.

We recommend adding two 1.5″ T.C. x 3/4″ Female BSPP adapters to the ports. From there you can use a ForgeFit 1.5″ T.C. x Male QD to use quick disconnects with your lines, or convert to your preferred tri-clamp fittings.

Features:

110V / 60hz
Max Head: 15-21 ft.
Max Flow: 13.5 Gal/min
Max Temp: 248°F (120°C)
Rotatable 304 stainless steel pump head
