Mk II Stainless Steel Brewing Pump – $76.49 w/stacking deals + Hands on Review

MK II High Temperature Magnetic Drive Pump

  • Stainless Steel Head
  • 110V/60HZ
  • 3.4 meter max head
  • 5 GPM (19L max flow)
  • Max temperature 248 F/ 120 C
  • Water resistant casing
  • 25 Watt Wort Pump
  • 1/2 inch fittings

The MK 11 Magnetic Drive Pump is constructed using food-grade materials and handles boiling wort with ease.  The magnetic drive functions like a clutch allowing one to slow the flow rate down by putting back pressure on the pump.  Since it is centrifugal, it’s not self priming, you must put the pump under the level of the liquid source.  This magnetic driven pump allows you to brew with confidence knowing that no contamination will occur from lubricated bearing potentially coming into contact with your liquid (beer).

Buy a Mark II 65 Watt, 12 GPM Wort Pump [12 GPM!] and Get a Free Top Draw

Mark II Homebrew Pump via William’s Brewing

from William’s Brewing:  “The 65 Watt MKII Pump from Keg King is a magnetic drive high temperature pump capable of pumping hot wort at temperatures of up to 248° F. It can pump up to 12 gallons per minute, making it perfect for systems too large for the 5 gallon per minute 25 Watt MK11 or the 7 gallon per minute Riptide pump. The maximum height it can pump is 17’ although gallons per minute will be reduced at higher pumping elevations.

The pump head and impeller are constructed of food grade Xarec plastic (very similar to Polysulphone). The magnetic drive acts as a clutch allowing the user to put back pressure on the pump to slow down flow. Like all magnetic drive wort pumps, it is not self priming – you must flood the pump head before turning on the pump. The pump has ¾” BSP male fittings on the inlet and outlet, which are compatible with all ¾” female NPT as well as BSP fittings. The inlet is in the center. Besides Xarec plastic, other wetted interior materials are nitrile and stainless steel.

The magnetic drive ensures no lubricated bearings are in contact with the liquid at all, so you can be sure there is no chance of any contamination of the liquid being pumped. The pump features a 6′ power cord, and a mounting plate for permanent mounting. The pump is 11” in overall length, and 4½” wide including the mounting plate. The pump head can be mounted at any angle on the pump to fit your application (an optional stainless head, William’s item X69, is also available).

Shop around and compare, other wort pumps that do 12 gallons per minute and more start at $379.99!

As of this posting, the pump with polysulfone head is selling for$199.99.  A Stainless Steel upgrade is also available on the product page.  Check William’s Brewing for current price and availability.

Hands on Review: Mark II Homebrew Pump w/Stainless Head

Updated: 5/3/2024

This review is by Homebrew Finds Contributor Brad Probert.  Brad is an engineer, expert homebrewer and experienced reviewer.  Grab a link to Brad’s website at the end of this review.

Mark II Pump with Steel Head

Let’s face it, pumps aren’t the most exciting piece of homebrew equipment you own. With the exception of the RipTide pump, they don’t have “features” you can impress your friends with. There are a few basic requirements, and once you get those met, you’re just looking for the lowest price. For me, the basic requirements are: 1) Magnetic drive, 2) Ideally a stainless steel head, 3) Temperature & splash protection, and lastly 4) Maximum head.

The MkII’s Magnetic Impeller

Several vendors offer what’s called a “Mark II Pump”. So you need to dig deeper than just the name when comparing pump offerings from different shops. One requirement, which is pretty much standard across beer brewing pumps, is what’s called a magnetic drive. Magnetic drive means you don’t have to worry about grease from shaft bearings getting into your wort. The other advantage is that you can close a valve- partially or completely- on the output side of your pump to reduce flow, and it causes no stress to your pump. Magnetic drive is pretty much standard in beer brewing pumps, but I bring it up because shopping on Amazon or eBay you might get drawn into something that isn’t.

About Pump Features and Specs – What does Pump Head Mean?

Pump heads come in either stainless steel or some kind of plastic/resin. Some resins have a better temperature durability, so after many hours of operation they are less likely to break down and lose pressure/flow capability. Stainless steel doesn’t have this issue, but it also has more durable threads. Most wort pumps come with 1/2″ Male NPT at inlet and outlet so you can screw on hose attachments or ball valves. I’ve had bad luck with stripping threads off a polysulphone pump head even with the most careful attention paid to not cross-threading it.

The next key differentiator between pumps is temperature capability. Some are designed to handle cooler liquids and are maybe only rated to something like 80F or 180F. This simply isn’t good enough for brewing, you want something that can handle boiling wort temperatures (212F or hotter).

Blichmann Riptide – $179.99, Save $20! + free shipping from MoreBeer

RipTide Brewing Pump by Blichmann Engineering

RipTide Brewing Pump by Blichmann Engineering via MoreBeer

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Imagine a brewing pump that eliminates cavitation, is easy to clean, has a built in valve, and is quiet. Introducing The RipTide pump from Blichmann, the first pump designed specifically for homebrewing.

We love this brew pump. Like a brewer wired on coffee, let us rattle off some of our favorite features.  First, the pull style relief valve that allows air to exit the pump head so the impeller won’t cavitate is a genius addition. Our next favorite feature is the bad-ass, built-in flow control valve so you don’t have to add additional ball-valves. While we dont manually clean our pumps very often we like the idea that we can easily do that with the clover clamp style connection. That might be particularly important if you are transferring cool wort where extra sanitation might make a difference.  Equally cool is the noise, or lack thereof, when operating. It just wears on you to hear your pump grinding away all day. The RipTide pump isn’t silent, but it is much quieter.  And to top it all off we like the mounting base and the extra long 9′ cord. 9′ gets the plug connection a few feet away from where we are brewing and less likely to be exposed to water – a simple upgrade that is really nice.  Oh, and we almost forgot the power switch which is always a nice feature on something electric!

All in all this is a no brainer upgrade for the difference in cost.

Features:

  • Strong rare earth magnets and a curved blade impeller provide 7 GPM and up to 21 ft of lift
  • Tri-Clamp head disassembles easily for cleaning
  • 1/2″ NPT inlet and outlet
  • Motor is enclosed in a splash proof and super quiet case
  • Rotatable stainless steel head
  • Integrated air release vent allows you to easily prime the pump everytime without those frustrating air bubbles and cavitation
  • Linear flow valve provided for excellent flow control
  • Power switch on base
  • 10 ft. long power cord with 120V plug

Discounts on Blichmann gear are rare. They are under MAP (minimum advertised pricing) agreements that make sales difficult.  There are periodic workarounds.

As of this posting MoreBeer has this marked down $20 to $179.99. Shipping is free with a qualifying $59 order to many US addresses. Price, promotions and availability can change quickly.  Please note that product prices and availability are subject to change. Buy a Mark II 12 GPM Wort Pump [12 GPM!] and Get $44 in free drinkware

As of this posting, the pump with polysulfone head is selling for $199.99  A Stainless Steel upgrade is also available on the product page.  Check William’s Brewing for current price and availability.

William’s likes to do these free glass promos, I’ve seen 1 and 2 glass promos in the past, but never four.  This is the best such deal I can recall and amounts to a really great deal.

The MKII Pump from Keg Land is a magnetic drive high temperature pump capable of pumping hot wort at temperatures of up to 248° F. It can pump up to 5 gallons per minute, making it perfect for 5 to 20 gallon systems. The maximum height it can pump is 11’ although gallons per minute will be reduced at higher pumping elevations.

The pump has ½” BSP male fittings on the inlet and outlet, which are compatible with all our ½” female NPT fittings. The inlet is in the center. Besides Xarec plastic, other wetted interior materials are nitrile rubber and stainless steel.

The magnetic drive ensures no lubricated bearings are in contact with the liquid at all, so you can be sure there is no chance of any contamination of the liquid being pumped. The pump features a 67” power cord, and a mounting plate for permanent mounting. The pump is 7¾” in overall length, and 3¼” wide including the mounting plate. The polysulfone head can be mounted at any angle on the pump to fit your application (an optional stainless head, William’s item Q80, is also available). Shop around and compare, we think this is the best value currently available in a high temperature wort transfer pump.

Important Safety Notice: This pump, like all 110 volt items that run in potentially wet areas, should be plugged into a GFI protected outlet for safety.
