Northern Brewer Anti-Gravity Transfer Pump

Some homebrew gear has a wide range of use, and some fills a very specific purpose. Those that fill a specific purpose typically become a critical piece in your process that you wonder how you managed before you had it. For me, that was the Anti-Gravity Transfer Pump from Northern Brewer. This pump is specifically intended for use in transferring beer or wort from vessel to vessel during your fermentation and/or kegging processes.

Closeup of Pump Head

The Anti-Gravity pump is a diaphragm pump, which is different than your typical wort pump. Wort pumps are usually an impeller design with a pump head inside with rotating blades that push little bits of fluid along from the inlet to the outlet as they spin. A diaphragm pump has a flexible membrane inside that oscillates back and forth like a trampoline. When the membrane is pushed in one direction, it compresses the fluid and forces it to the outlet. And when the membrane is pulled in the opposite direction, it creates a vacuum in the pump chamber which draws fluid in. A set of check balls ensures flow only goes in one direction.

  • Upgrade your MKII Magnetic Drive Pump with a stainless steel pump head that quickly & easily installs via 3″ tri-clamp
  • T.C. connection allows the pump head to be oriented at any angle in a full 360-degrees
  • Pull ring PRV at the pump outlet makes it easy to purge air and prime the pump before each use
  • Inline flow path for smooth integration into your brewery while keeping your tubing lines tidy
  • Stainless steel head with 1/2″ threaded ports to attach your preferred fittings—tri-clamp, quick disconnect, camlock, and More!

Upgrade your MKII Magnetic Drive Pump with a stainless steel inline pump head! The TC Breakdown Brewing Pump Head provides several advantages over the standard MKII pump head, first and foremost being it’s made of stainless steel instead of plastic. This allows for much easier installment of fittings without the risk of breaking off the plastic inlet or outlet. It will also convert the pump head from “Center Inlet” to “Inline” flow path which can make it much easier to integrate into your brewery and keep your brewing hoses tidy. At the outlet of the pump, there is a very handy pull ring PRV that allows you to bleed liquor or wort from the pump head to release trapped air and prime the pump. But what some MKII users might find most exciting about this upgrade kit is that it converts the pump head connection to 3″ tri-clamp! Not only do you have a full 360-degrees to orient the pump head any which way, cleaning the pump after use has never been easier—just pop off the tri-clamp, wash out the pump head, and clamp back on.

This upgrade kit is only compatible with the 25-Watt MKII pump (PMP500). It will not fit the larger 65-Watt MKII or the Blichmann Engineering RipTide pump. If you don’t already own the 25-Watt MKII, you can purchase it with the T.C. pump head already installed here.

Tri-Clamp Pump Head
The T.C. pump head can be removed quickly and easily using the 3″ tri-clamp. This means no drivers or power drills are needed to back out the six Phillips head screws that mount the pump head on the standard version of the MKII. Whip the head off in a flash to clear out spent grain, hop material, or clear a blockage. Attaching the pump head with a tri-clamp also allows the head to be rotated at any angle in a full 360-degrees. This makes it easy to configure the plumbing to your unique brewery setup.

Inline Design
An “inline” pump head simply means the input and output are on a straight horizontal line with one another which can make it easier to integrate into your brewery setup. If you’re using a 3-vessel horizontal system, the inline pump head will make it easier to keep your hoses neat and tidy compared to pumps heads with a center inlet.

PRV Purge Valve
The corny keg style PRV will make priming the pump a breeze. Simply let bleed the pump head to purge air out before turning the pump on and you’ll avoid any cavitation issues. The PRV also acts as a safety so you do not over pressurize your pump head or brewery system.

304 Stainless Steel
The entire pump head is made from 304 grade stainless steel so it’s highly resistant to chemicals, heat, and physical abuse. The 1/2″ BSP threaded ports can be used to attach barbs, quick disconnects, camlocks, tri-clamp adapters, or any other 1/2″ fittings you prefer.

Hands on Review: Mark II Homebrew Pump w/Stainless Head + 30% Off Coupon!

Mark II Pump with Steel Head

Let’s face it, pumps aren’t the most exciting piece of homebrew equipment you own. With the exception of the RipTide pump, they don’t have “features” you can impress your friends with. There are a few basic requirements, and once you get those met, you’re just looking for the lowest price. For me, the basic requirements are: 1) Magnetic drive, 2) Ideally a stainless steel head, 3) Temperature & splash protection, and lastly 4) Maximum head.

The MkII’s Magnetic Impeller

Several vendors offer what’s called a “Mark II Pump”. So you need to dig deeper than just the name when comparing pump offerings from different shops. One requirement, which is pretty much standard across beer brewing pumps, is what’s called a magnetic drive. Magnetic drive means you don’t have to worry about grease from shaft bearings getting into your wort. The other advantage is that you can close a valve- partially or completely- on the output side of your pump to reduce flow, and it causes no stress to your pump. Magnetic drive is pretty much standard in beer brewing pumps, but I bring it up because shopping on Amazon or eBay you might get drawn into something that isn’t.

About Pump Features and Specs – What does Pump Head Mean?

Pump heads come in either stainless steel or some kind of plastic/resin. Some resins have a better temperature durability, so after many hours of operation they are less likely to break down and lose pressure/flow capability. Stainless steel doesn’t have this issue, but it also has more durable threads. Most wort pumps come with 1/2″ Male NPT at inlet and outlet so you can screw on hose attachments or ball valves. I’ve had bad luck with stripping threads off a polysulphone pump head even with the most careful attention paid to not cross-threading it.

The next key differentiator between pumps is temperature capability. Some are designed to handle cooler liquids and are maybe only rated to something like 80F or 180F. This simply isn’t good enough for brewing, you want something that can handle boiling wort temperatures (212F or hotter).

The best-selling MKII Magnetic Drive Pump now available with a major upgrade! This unit comes standard with an inline stainless steel pump head that installs on the pump body with a 3″ tri-clamp. Compared to the standard “center inlet” pump head, the “inline” flow path can make it much easier to integrate into your brewery and keep your brewing hoses tidy. At the outlet of the pump, there is a very handy pull ring PRV that allows you to bleed liquor or wort from the pump head to release trapped air and prime the pump. And with the 3″ T.C. connection, not only do you have a full 360-degrees to orient the pump head any which way, cleaning the pump after use could not be easier—just pop off the tri-clamp, wash out the pump head, and clamp back on.

The MKII is a perfect pump for your system and comes highly recommended for brewers stepping up to all-grain brewing. Rather than schlepping heavy kettles filled with hot liquor or wort around your brewery, or awkwardly stacking them into a 3-tier gravity setup, allow this handy pump to move liquid from vessel to vessel while everything remains in place. The magnetic drive allows you to slow down the flow without damaging the pump. This can be done by attaching a ball valve to the outlet side of the pump, and then you simply open or close the valve to control the flow rate. The pump itself is not self-priming, but priming is super easy thanks to the pull ring PRV which will help ensure the pump head is full of liquid and trapped air is released before powering it on.

Features:

  • 110V / 60hz
  • Max Head: 11.15 ft. (3.4 m)
  • Max Flow: 5 Gal/min (19L/min)
  • Max Temperature: 248°F (120°C)
  • 360° rotatable stainless steel pump head
  • 1.5″ T.C. ports
  • Water resistant casing (not waterproof)

KegLand Part Number: KL27526

If you’re brewing on a budget and want the most affordable pump possible, check out the standard model MKII pump. This has been our best-selling pump for years and you can always upgrade it down the road with the standard stainless center inlet head or inline stainless tri-clamp head.

Although the Chugger still needs to be primed before each use, the X-Dry Series offers a new level of protection from damage due to cavitation.

The Chugger lineup of pumps represents a great value for an even better price. These pumps are workhorses in the brewery. Featuring a robust flow rate of 7 gpm, and a magnetic drive designed to handle back-pressure, these pumps are a great addition to any brewing setup! The Stainless Steel Chugger showcases their molded Stainless Steel Pump Head. This stainless pump is a steal for the price, and we’ve been more than happy with the quality! Use this to ease transfers between kettles, cool wort via a counterflow chiller, or recirculate icewater for quicker chilling!

The Chugger pump model has 1.5″ tri-clamp inlet and outlet, allowing easy integration with your T.C. kettles or fermenter! We recommend setting these pumps up with a butterfly valve on the outflow side, this way you can throttle down the outgoing flow rate, allowing for more efficient sparges or cooling! The pump head can also be rotated 360° (in 90° intervals) allowing for even more customization!

Features:

Run Dry Carbon Bearing
Stainless Steel Center Inlet Pump Head
Food Grade up to 250° F
1.5″ tri-clamp inlet and outlet
High Flow rate of 7 gpm
Max Head 18.6 ft
115v 55″ cord and plug attached
50/60 Hz, 1.4 amp
1/20 HP, 3500 RPM
Note: When using silicone tubing, we recommend using a slighlty larger barb than the I.D. of the tubing. This is because silicone tubing tends to have greater pliability than most tubing. For example, when using 1/2″ silicone tubing, we recommend our 5/8″ barb (H620), to help ensure a better seal!

  • Magnetic drive enables you to slow down the flow without damaging the pump—just add a ball valve to the outlet!
  • T.C. connection allows the pump head to be oriented at any angle in a full 360-degrees

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

The “Big Brother” to one of our best-selling pumps! Expect the same quality that customers have come to expect from the MKII Pump (PMP500) but with more power. This 65 watt magnetic drive pump is powerful enough for homebrewers and micro brewers alike. Use it to move hot wort in an all-grain system and also to transfer wort from boil kettle to fermenter. The pump head is made from 304 grade stainless steel with 3/4″ threaded ports that can easily be converted to tri-clamp. The magnetic drive allows you to slow down the flow without damaging the pump. This pump is not self-priming so do not run the pump dry. The pump head can be rotated in 60-degree increments, allowing for 6 different pump head orientations.

We recommend adding two 1.5″ T.C. x 3/4″ Female BSPP adapters to the ports. From there you can use a ForgeFit 1.5″ T.C. x Male QD to use quick disconnects with your lines, or convert to your preferred tri-clamp fittings.

Max Head: 15-21 ft.
Max Flow: 13.5 Gal/min
Max Temp: 248°F (120°C)

Mark II 25 Watt Wort Pump – on sale for… $39.99 at William’s Brewing

Mark II 25 Watt Wort Pump

Mark II 25 Watt Wort Pump from William’s Brewing

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

The MKII Pump from Keg Land is a magnetic drive high temperature pump capable of pumping hot wort at temperatures of up to 248° F. It can pump up to 5 gallons per minute, making it perfect for 5 to 20 gallon systems. The maximum height it can pump is 11’ although gallons per minute will be reduced at higher pumping elevations.

The pump head and impeller are constructed of food grade Xarec plastic (very similar to Polysulphone). The magnetic drive acts as a clutch allowing the user to put back pressure on the pump to slow down flow. Like all magnetic drive wort pumps, it is not self priming – you must flood the pump head before turning on the pump. The pump has ½” BSP male fittings on the inlet and outlet, which are compatible with all our ½” female NPT fittings. The inlet is in the center. Besides Xarec plastic, other wetted interior materials are nitrile rubber and stainless steel.

The magnetic drive ensures no lubricated bearings are in contact with the liquid at all, so you can be sure there is no chance of any contamination of the liquid being pumped. The pump features a 67” power cord, and a mounting plate for permanent mounting. The pump is 7¾” in overall length, and 3¼” wide including the mounting plate. The polysulfone head can be mounted at any angle on the pump to fit your application (an optional stainless head, William’s item Q80, is also available). Shop around and compare, we think this is the best value currently available in a high temperature wort transfer pump.

Important Safety Notice: This pump, like all 110 volt items that run in potentially wet areas, should be plugged into a GFI protected outlet for safety.
