The next hot hop? This delicious Pale Ale is based on new experimental hop, HBC438, that has the unofficial name of Ron Mexico due to its native US neomexicanus hop heritage. This hop has enticing aromas of stone and tropical fruit, orange, mint, and herbal characteristics. Vinnie from Russian River Brewing (of Pliny fame) used this hop in an experimental beer brewed for the National Homebrewers Conference and also recently raved about this hop in a talk we attended.

The story of this hop is really unique. Traditionally hop breeders finish the testing of experimental hops internally and then release to the commercial market. Now they are turning the tables and trying something new! HBC 438 is being released EXCLUSIVELY to the Homebrewing community first. Then in the future, as more is grown, they will release it to commercial brewers. So the tables are flipped – Pro brewers will be reading your reviews and seeing what you thought of the hottest new hop.

What is also cool is that all proceeds from the sales of these hops go to ALS.net and help fund the ALS Therapy Development Institute, the world’s largest non-profit biotech focused entirely on ALS Research.

Our take on a Ron Mexico pale includes some acid malt and carapils for body, crystal 60 for color and richness, and Rahr Two-Row for a great malty bas

Have you ever wished you could crush your enemies and consume their life force!? …. yeah *cough* nor have we. But the same can’t be said for the Juicy Brut! This maniacal monarch didn’t gain support for his claim to the throne through strategic wedding arrangements, nor did he bring his challengers to heel through deftly negotiated treaties. Oh, no. He conquered the realm using his dry, brutish nature and sheer force of juiciness. When the Juicy Brut enters the fray wielding his pulp-stained battle axe, he yawps but one maxim — no quarter!

Juicy Brut IPA has a pronounced dry character with almost no malt sweetness, setting the stage for the Mosaic®, Amarillo® and Citra® hops to be on full display. Leaning heavily on whirlpool and post fermentation additions, the tropical flavor of these hops come bursting forth with aromas of lemon, orange, grapefruit, passionfruit and mango. We can offer only one piece of advice. Bend the knee and swear fealty to the Juicy Brut!

This maniacal monarch didn’t gain support for his claim to the throne through strategic wedding arrangements, nor did he bring his challengers to heel through deftly negotiated treaties. Oh, no. He conquered the realm using his dry, brutish nature and sheer force of juiciness. When the Juicy Brut enters the fray wielding his pulp-stained battle axe, he yawps but one maxim — no quarter!

Juicy Brut IPA has a pronounced dry character with almost no malt sweetness, setting the stage for the Mosaic®, Amarillo® and Citra® hops to be on full display. Leaning heavily on whirlpool and post fermentation additions, the tropical flavor of these hops come bursting forth with aromas of lemon, orange, grapefruit, passionfruit and mango. We can offer only one piece of advice. Bend the knee and swear fealty to the Juicy Brut!

Charlie Essers (AKA Push Eject) has been a longtime friend of MoreBeer, The Brewing Network, and homebrewers in general. Dubbed “one of the nicest guys in homebrewing” by those who know him, Push wanted us to have this recipe that he brews whenever his father-in-law comes for a visit. Push says: “My family has been supportive of all the brewing gadgets and scattered projects including my “dark-beer-phobic” father-in-law. This recipe is an Americanized pilsner that I have evolved for him over the years. Sweeter than a standard pilsner, but still crisp and refreshing, I can’t keep this around long in the Summer months.” Push began brewing in 1999 after buying a starter homebrew kit as a bad joke for a friend who earned a DUI and getting one for himself as well on impulse at the register. After going all grain in 2002, it was clear that automation was a necessity in his process, and his love of brewing gadgets was born. His first stand was designed and built in 2003 and his first Wort-O-Matic control panel in 2006. These led to the launch of wortomatic.com and a close relationship with MoreBeer! and The Brewing Network.
