cln_img_1201

Here’s a hands on look at the Model V2244 Vacuum Sealing System by FoodSaver.  Features: Compact Size, Removable dishwasher safe drip tray,  Includes Accessory port and hose.

First, Why would you want a FoodSaver for homebrewing?  Vacuum sealers are indispensable for storing hops [See: 5 Recent Hop Finds].  You can save money by getting in on bulk hop buys.  Use your vacuum sealer to break these up and to preserve freshness.  You can also store specialty grains in vacuum bags or using the mason jar attachment.  Other uses include: storing base grains, partial dry yeast packs and storing and preserving other beer ingredients.

Why a Temp Controller?

Temperature controllers, sometimes referred to as over-riding thermostats, can control devices like refrigerators, freezers and fermentation heating devices to provide a consistent temperature for your kegerator, fermentation chamber or brew system. They do this by monitoring the temperature and cycling on and off the device in question. Generally, you will set the device to full cooling or heating power and the temperature controller takes over from there.

Camlock Cam & Groove Disconnects for Your Homebrew Setup

big_e_base_2

I’ve used ProFlow Dynamics Quick Disconnects on my kettles, mash tun, pumps and tubing for a long time.  They have worked great for me.  I put male connectors kettles, mash tuns and pumps and use female connectors for tubing.  Standardizing on this (or the opposite) means you can use tubing as jumpers and always have the availability to connect your gear.

These are made from Stainless Steel and are available in lots of configurations.  Those are classified by Type and Size.  Type may mean something in “commercial cam lock fitting circles”, but I was initially confused by this.  Types are akin to model numbers.  For example, Type A is Female NPT to Male Cam and Groove.

Since I have started using these ProFlow has added a number of new types including “Big” Variants.  Big C and Big E.  Those have much larger barbs when compared to the original C and E.

Hands On Review: MoreBeer’s Expandable CO2 Manifold System

Hands on Review MoreBeer CO2 Manifold System

MoreBeer’s gas CO2 manifold system comes in a variety of sizes including 2, 3, 4 and 6 way variants.  An add-on is also available that allows you to add more runs to the manifold as you have need.

I have long extolled the virtues of this system.  This is one of a few things in homebrewing that can actually grow with you.  Example – I could not add 4 gallons to my 6 gallon extract kettle.  I had to replace it.  This system actually grows with you.  Here is a hands on look.

Universal Poppets Tips and Tricks!

I use universal style poppets exclusively when rebuilding kegs. Finding the right OEM specific replacement poppets can be a chore. Beyond finding the right part number, these can be prohibitively expensive. Paying $10 to $14, or more, for an OEM poppet isn’t fun. In fact, if you really had to pay that, it may not even make sense to keep the keg.

Enter universal poppets.  These can be picked up at a reasonable cost, regularly under $2 each, and fit the vast majority of kegs.

A Valuebrew Exclusive! Stainless Steel Universal Replacement Poppets with our Food Safe Silicone O-Rings.

These work with all standard Ball Lock and Pin Lock homebrew kegs.

Ever wonder what other universal poppet o-rings are made of? Us too, after all this is one of the most high contact o-rings in you draft beer setup. We took matters into our own hands and worked with our suppliers to source a 304 Stainless Steel + Food Grade Silicone option. Stainless steel construction on all the metal parts and premium quality food grade silicone for the o-ring.

Our pledge to you… Let’s face it, the stainless pieces in most universal replacement poppets should last a long, long time. How about the o-rings? Not so much… lost, broken, cracked, off smell. This is where our pledge comes in… we’ll always carry replacement o-rings for these universal poppets. No need to guess what size replacements to buy or completely replace your universal poppets because you don’t have a reliable source for replacements.

Beyond finding the right part number, these can be prohibitively expensive. Paying $10 to $14, or more, for an OEM poppet isn’t fun. In fact, if you really had to pay that, it may not even make sense to keep the keg.

I’ve long advocated to tossing OEM o-rings immediately. You don’t know what they’re made of, and you can’t get replacements. Replacing them immediately with a known quality o-ring and known part number before trimming to fit means you’ll be using the right materials and have a source for replacements.

Well… finally there’s an option that comes with quality o-rings made from the right materials out of the box!  Beyond that, Valuebrew has pledged to always carry replacement o-rings, so you’ll always have a source when the time comes for replacements.  Available in 5 and 10 packs with the option to add on a pack of replacement o-rings.

Back in stock!  These have been out of stock for months. We’ll the full story is they came back in stock a few weeks ago, but sold out so quickly that I wasn’t able to get a post up. So, as of this update… they’re back in stock after months of being sold out!  Get them while you can.

Tip: Immediately Replace Universal Poppet O-Rings

I remove and discard the o-rings that come with universal poppets.  That may sound a little odd, but there are a couple issues. First, I have no idea what these are made of. They are probably okay, but I’m not sure. This is one spot that has a lot of contact with beer. I want to make sure these are food grade.  Second, when it comes time to replace these o-rings I want replacements that won’t change fit.  I’m aware of a single source for bulk food grade o-ring replacements for universal poppets. Size may vary slightly compared to OEM, so I replace these before adjusting for fit so that the replacements won’t change the way these fit. The stainless parts of universal poppets should last a long, long time, having a reliable source for replacements that you know aren’t going to change anything is a big benefit. Beyond that, being sure you’re using food grade materials at this point is worth a few cents.

Sean Terrill’s Refractometer Calculator!

img_refract

Updated: 5/29/2024

In days of yore, refractometers were considered a pre-fermentation only tool.  That’s because the alcohol present after fermentation begins throws off refractometer readings.  That was until people starting figuring out that it was possible to reasonably estimate specific gravity after fermentation has begun.  The first such calculations that I became aware of were from MoreBeer.  Check the documents tab on this product page to see their spreadsheet.

Since that time, additional work has been done to refine these calculations.  One such body of work belongs to Sean Terrill.  Sean is a smart guy.  Like nuclear engineer kind of smart.  Sean did a good bit of work on the subject and came up with an even more accurate formula for estimating specific gravity after fermentation is begun.

See My Star San Tips and Tricks for lots more about this great technique.

Bulk Keg QD Quick Disconnect Replacement O-Rings

cmbecker ball lock

Ball Lock and Pin Lock Keg QDs have an internal o-ring gasket that keeps liquid and gas from leaking out the top side.

I’ve found that it’s pretty easy to lose these.  Beyond that, they wear out and crack.  I’ve also had some that have gotten seated incorrectly and ended up becoming mis-formed so that they no longer sit properly.

Thermoworks Thermapen Mk4

thermapen mk4 review

Beer brewing is filled with processes that are based on temperature. Some processes achieve acceptable results with general temperature ranges, but others require specific temperatures where a few degrees hotter or cooler make a difference. But perhaps the most important aspect of temperature accuracy is repeatability. You set up a mash or fermentation process based on expert feedback you read in a book, or just anecdotal advice you get from fellow homebrewers. If it works out to your liking, you want to be able to do it the same way again next time.

Hands On Review: Old Ale Ball Lock Kegs from Adventures in Homebrewing & Northern Brewer

aih keg review

Hands on Review AIH’s Brand New Ball Lock Kegs

Adventures in Homebrewing was a homebrew store located in Taylor, Michigan in the Detroit area. They offered a wide variety of homebrew supplies and gear including some really unique things at reasonable prices. They also had great customer service. Toward the end up 2021 AIH was bought out by Northern Brewer. Since Adventures in Homebrewing and Austin Homebrew Supply have joined Midwest Supplies in being vanity storefronts of Northern Brewer.

Adventures in Homebrewing produced a line of brand new ball lock kegs.  These were AIH’s own design. They are also branded “Old Ale Supply Company”.

It seems that Northern Brewer kept very few of Adventures in Homebrewing’s unique offerings, this keg is one that they kept.

BIAB Brew Day Spreadsheet – Water Calculations + Narrative Step by Step Directions

biab homebrew spreadsheet

Why BIAB?

Brew in a Bag (BIAB) is a quick, easy and economical way to brew all grain batches of beer.  I released my brew day spreadsheet some time ago along with a version of that to be used for small batch beers.  See below for links.  Either of those could be modified to work with BIAB by changing variables,  This version is specifically designed for full size BIAB batches.

How I Use Brew Day Spreadsheets

How do I use brew day spreadsheets?  First, I do use recipe formulation software.  Some of those programs have brew day components.  I’ve just never gotten into using those features.  For better or worse, I use a spreadsheet.  I make a copy and name it using the batch number and beer name and then quickly plug in the basics.  This creates a one sheet printable page that I can use on brew day.  That gives me a single piece of paper with all of my numbers and a spot for brew day notes.  Notes can go back into the spreadsheet for archival.

Step by Step Temperature Build Using the STC/ITC-1000

stc 1000 temperature controller instructions

The STC-1000 is versatile digital temperature controller. It’s manufactured by a number of manufacturers

Specifications can very but you can generally speaking these are dual stage temperature controllers that you can use to help control temperature of your kegerator, fermentation chamber or as part of your brew system. Dual Stage means this can control a heating and cooling device.  Alternatively, it can control a heating or a cooling device.   Note that these are unwired controllers and will require some work to implement in your project.

STC-1000 vs ITC-1000

The STC-1000 is a great controller, arguably the best value in temperature controllers, especially if you’re on the handy side.  The ITC-1000 from Inkbird is what I would call and upgrade to the STC-1000.  The big upgrade is that the ITC-1000 display ins deg F and deg C, where most versions of the STC-1000 were deg C display only.  Beyond there, it’s my understanding that there are some usability improvements in the ITC-1000.

If you’re looking for a pre-wired temp controller, consider – ITC-308 – Review

Some things to consider when buying an STC/ITC 1000 controller

  • Input voltage. These can be powered by DC and AC 120 to 240
  • Readout capabilities. Many STC-1000 controllers read in Celsius only. Some have the ability to read in Celsius or Fahrenheit.

The American Homebrewers Association has a great write up on a step by step build out of an STC-1000/ITC-1000 Temperature Controller Build.  It includes a parts list, pictures and diagrams along with a step by step how to for getting this going.

How to Build a Temperature Controller for the AHA

by Duncan Bryant

This dual-stage temperature controller is perfect for managing temperatures of your kegerator, fermentation chamber or keezer. It allows for a hot and a cool trigger to be individually controlled, so you could have your fermentation refrigerator hooked up to the cold trigger and a heat source to the hot trigger. If the temperature falls below the target value, the heating device will be turned on, and vice versa.

Note: this project deals with electrical current and DIY’ers should pursue the build at their own discretion. Read through the directions entirely to have a full understanding of the build before diving in. If you are unsure of your abilities, consult with someone well versed in electrical wiring.

Make sure the components you use are compatible and rated for your intended application.  Contact manufacturer with questions about suitability or a specific application.  Always read and follow manufacturer directions.
