BrewSSSiphon Stainless Steel Auto Siphon

A siphon is a pretty basic piece of homebrew equipment. It comes in every homebrewing starter kit I’ve ever seen. But of course, as with everything in homebrewing, there are upgrade options. If you’re like me, the day you discovered a thing called an auto siphon, you were saying “You’re kidding me. I just pump that inside tube up and down a couple times and I get the beer flowing?” And then you laugh at how ridiculous it was to be filling a length of tubing with water, plugging one end, trying to force it on the hard plastic racking cane with one hand, etc.

One upgrade from the auto siphon is moving from the 3/8” to 1/2″ siphon (another moment of disbelief for me, “Seriously- there was one that flows twice as fast out there all this time!?”). And there’s the sterile siphon starter. This looks even easier than an auto siphon to get beer flowing, but it’s only for those that ferment in carboys.

To this uncrowded field of options for a common brewing tool enters the BrewSSSiphon. Yes, it has that many ‘s’ in its name. With homebrewers’ infatuation of stainless steel, I suppose it was only a matter of time.

Contents of the “Complete Kit”

The siphon comes with a choice of three different levels. The first is if you just want to purchase the siphon on its own. The second level is called the Basic Kit which adds the siphon clip (see more about that below). The third level is called the Complete Kit, which has the siphon, clip, a set of 3 cleaning brushes (long enough to clean the entire length of the tubes), and a length of silicone tubing for your wort transfers. The tubing is right-sized for an air-tight fit on the transfer tube, but thin-walled so it’s easy to slip on and stay put without a clamp.

Note from HBF: This strikes a real chord with me and addresses a frustration that I personally have.  All of my equipment is ported.  I have quick disconnects on every connection and most brew days things go smoothly.  Periodically I run into issues and need to siphon something.  Pretty much without fail, I’ll get a plastic auto-siphon out (usually still new in the package), clean and sanitize it and start to use it and it almost immediately breaks.  I don’t know why it happens, but it almost always does, making a bad situation worse.  Afterwards, I order another one so I have something (to probably break) the next time I have an issue.  The plastic siphons I’ve used have been some of the most frustrating pieces of homebrew equipment that I’ve owned.

Simply blow into the sterile filter, which slightly pressurizes the carboy, forcing beer to flow up the racking cane and out the tubing, thus starting your siphon. This is hands down superior to the numerous other methods of starting a siphon (and we have tried them all!)

How to Use: Attach the Sterile Siphon starter assembly by firmly pushing the carboy hood over the mouth of the carboy. Slide the stainless racking cane to the desired depth, just about the sediment level and blow into the white, sanitary air filter for 2-3 seconds until you have a solid flow of beer running out the tubing. There is no need to worry about contamination from your mouth, as the sanitary filter removes 99.98% of airborne bacteria.

About the White Sterile Filter: There are two sides to the filter – an “in” and an “out”. The direction you use doesn’t matter, however, you want to take note of which way you first push air through it and always keep it that way. There is an arrow on the edge of the filter housing that we use to keep the airflow going one direction when using it. The filter should never get wet, so don’t try and sanitize it by dunking it in sanitizer. If you want to clean the outside of it, use Alpet D2. To store the filter, use a little tinfoil on the “”In”” of the filter and store in a zip-lock bag.

 

I have this and it works really well.  You blow into the sterile filter to start a siphon. The air that’s drawn in through the filter during siphoning is sterile.  You can siphon beer or cleaning/sanitizing solution.  If you siphon sanitizer, you’re left with a sanitized carboy and filtered air.

About the White Sterile Filter: There are two sides to the filter – an “in” and an “out”. The direction you use doesn’t matter, however, you want to take note of which way you first push air through it and always keep it that way. There is an arrow on the edge of the filter housing that we use to keep the airflow going one direction when using it. The filter should never get wet, so don’t try and sanitize it by dunking it in sanitizer. If you want to clean the outside of it, use Alpet D2. To store the filter, use a little tinfoil on the “”In”” of the filter and store in a zip-lock bag.

 

I have this and it works really well.  You blow into the sterile filter to start a siphon. The air that’s drawn in through the filter during siphoning is sterile.  You can siphon beer or cleaning/sanitizing solution.  If you siphon sanitizer, you’re left with a sanitized carboy and filtered air.
