The 5 lb rating on this is for pet food.  If I had to guess, I would guess that you could hold more than 5 lbs of malt in this container.  Generally speaking, malt capacity is higher compared with pet food rated capacities.  That’s only a guess.

Potential Uses: Convert to fermenters (search Amazon for food grade grommets) and for grain storage.  My general rule of thumb for unmilled grain storage is 5 lbs per gallon.  At that rate, these would each hold 25 lbs of grain.  That’s an estimate, actual capacity will vary.  Additional uses could include – assist with cleaning and sanitizing items and generally lugging stuff around.

I’ve seen the capacity of this container described a couple different ways.  67 quarts and 55 lbs.

My rule of thumb for grain storage is 5 lbs per gallon.  67 quarts = 16.75 gallons.  At 5 lbs per gallon that’s… 83.75 lbs of grain storage.  This is an estimate.  It should easily hold a full 50 to 55 lb bag of grain with room to spare.  These are estimates.

My estimates for grain and dme storage capacity

  • Grain weighs approximately 5 lbs per Gallon or 1.25 lbs per Liter for umilled malt – Justification
  • I estimate that DME weighs about 1.125 lbs per Liter

With these estimates, each 4.3 L container would hold about about 5.3 lbs of malt and about 4.8 lbs of DME. Those are rough estimates, actual storage capacity will vary.
