Thoughts from HBF… So, this has two wireless sensors along with an ambient thermometer that’s built into the main unit. It also records minimum and maximum temps for each sensor. You could use one sensor in your fermentation chamber and one sensor in your kegerator to monitor temperatures. The min and max feature would also give you a great idea about how things are working. As a bonus you also get all the same info for the ambient temp where the base is located. Note that the sensors need to be within the stated range of this unit (or closer).

The IR-GUN-S non-contact infrared thermometer is your best deal in a basic infrared temperature gun. IR-GUN-S Infrared Thermometer is designed for broad general purpose use in research, industrial applications, HVAC, construction, repair or maintenance services, and even around the house if you’re technically inclined.

Use this versatile IR thermal sensor to read surface temperatures from a distance – instantly. IR-GUN-S has a quality lens and machined baffles to ensure accuracy with a 12:1 distance-to-target spot ratio. At 12″ you can measure a 1″ spot diameter. IR-GUN-S includes an adjustable emissivity so you can set the IR thermal sensor to read a variety of different surface materials. Operation is simple. Let go of the trigger and the reading will stay on “Hold” for several seconds so you can take note of it. While the infrared thermometer’s trigger is depressed, you can also scan looking for MAX/MIN temperatures as you move the temperature laser gun across a larger target. IR-GUN-S is a useful thermometer to help find hot or cold spots in walls, insulation, heated objects or larger areas. Other features include an averaging function and a differential mode. High and low alarms are easily set so IR-GUN-S will beep for readings below or above your preset thresholds.

The main display of the infrared thermometer is big enough to read and it’s backlit for easy viewing anytime. Batteries are included and replacements can be found anywhere (2xAAA). Order the optional holster to protect the IR-GUN-S between uses. This is a hiqh-quality, professional infrared thermometer that will surprise you at this price.

Since this is no touch, you can check the temp of yeast washing and yeast rehydration water and your starter wort without the risk of infection. I find mine particularly useful for rehydrating yeast.

Infrared thermometers should not be considered a direct replacement for a conventional thermometer. A quality IR thermometer will give you a close approximation of surface temperatures. Note that steam seems to throw off readings. Uses include: Contained yeast rehydration water, chilled wort or starter temperature, kegerator, fermenter or fermentation area and beer tasting samples.
