The ChefAlarm from ThermoWorks (the folks behind the nearly universally lauded Thermapen) is a great Thermometer and Timer Combo for homebrewing. It tracks both highs and lows, has both high and low alarms and has a built in timer. It has an easy to read screen with backlight. Check out my Full Hands on Review for more info. I recommend the immersible Pro-Series Needle Probe or the longer 12″ (non-immersible) probes, both are available on the accessories tab.

The IR-GUN-S non-contact infrared thermometer is your best deal in a basic infrared temperature gun. IR-GUN-S Infrared Thermometer is designed for broad general purpose use in research, industrial applications, HVAC, construction, repair or maintenance services, and even around the house if you’re technically inclined.

Use this versatile IR thermal sensor to read surface temperatures from a distance – instantly. IR-GUN-S has a quality lens and machined baffles to ensure accuracy with a 12:1 distance-to-target spot ratio. At 12″ you can measure a 1″ spot diameter. And, the thermometer gun’s bright pointing laser helps you aim.
IR-GUN-S includes an adjustable emissivity so you can set the IR thermal sensor to read a variety of different surface materials. Operation is simple. Pull the trigger on the IR-GUN-S to instantly read the surface temperature you’re pointing at. Let go of the trigger and the reading will stay on “Hold” for several seconds so you can take note of it. While the infrared thermometer’s trigger is depressed, you can also scan looking for MAX/MIN temperatures as you move the temperature laser gun across a larger target. IR-GUN-S is a useful thermometer to help find hot or cold spots in walls, insulation, heated objects or larger areas. Other features include an averaging function and a differential mode. High and low alarms are easily set so IR-GUN-S will beep for readings below or above your preset thresholds.
The main display of the infrared thermometer is big enough to read and it’s backlit for easy viewing anytime. Batteries are included and replacements can be found anywhere (2xAAA). Order the optional holster to protect the IR-GUN-S between uses. This is a hiqh-quality, professional infrared thermometer that will surprise you at this price.
Since this is no touch, you can check the temp of yeast washing and yeast rehydration water and your starter wort without the risk of infection. I find mine particularly useful for rehydrating yeast.
Infrared thermometers should not be considered a direct replacement for a conventional thermometer. A quality IR thermometer will give you a close approximation of surface temperatures. Note that steam seems to throw off readings. Uses include: Contained yeast rehydration water, chilled wort or starter temperature, kegerator, fermenter or fermentation area and beer tasting samples.
